Steinhatchee
Situated in Florida’s Big Bend region 70 miles west of Gainesville, Steinhatchee is an angler’s paradise where visitors can truly get away from it all. Steinhatchee is known as “The Best-Kept Secret in Florida,” and for good reason. With fewer than 1,000 residents and access to the Steinhatchee River and Gulf of Mexico, a trip to Steinhatchee means plenty of time on the water — without the crowds.
Historically a fishing village, Steinhatchee retains that character in its charming buildings, laid-back marinas, and restaurants with stunning views of the water. Local favorite eateries Kathi’s Krab Shack, Fiddler’s Restaurant & Resort, and Roy’s Restaurant are known for fresh seafood, and bright and beachy McDavid’s Cafe serves up hot donuts and Southern-style breakfast, brunch, and lunch. Steinhatchee’s food scene also includes annual events such as the Fiddler Crab Festival in February and Sips and Sunsets in November, which offer live entertainment, local fare, craft beer, and wine.
Anglers can rent a boat or book a charter to fish the waters of Steinhatchee, known for an abundance of sought-after species, including grouper, snapper, redfish, spotted sea trout, black sea bass, and tarpon. In the summertime, scalloping is a popular family-friendly way to spend time on the shallow Gulf waters. For paddlers, the Steinhatchee River Paddling Trail offers a six-mile adventure from Steinhatchee Falls to the Jena Boat Ramp.
Visitors have plenty of options when it comes to finding a place to stay near the water, including quaint cottages, resorts, and inns, such as Steinhatchee Landing Resort and Steinhatchee River Inn and Marina.
