The Art League, Marco Island’s Center for the Arts is the community’s non-profit organization dedicated to promoting education in and appreciation of the arts. Established in 1969 with a mission in the visual arts, it adds the dramatic, literary, musical and culinary arts programming to its repertoire, making the name change a natural progression.

The focus has always been to inspire interest and provide a learning experience, and the Center for the Arts continues this effort through classes, exhibits, demonstrations, and social activities for all ages.

Marco Island’s Center for the Arts, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, started with just 19 members. During those early years and through the ‘70s the artist members met wherever space was available. Outdoor art shows, meetings, workshops all took place wherever the members could find a spot. This all changed in 1980 with the completion of their first one room building. At that time the membership had grown to 163! Now entering its 39th year and a “few” renovations later, Marco Island’s Center for the Arts makes its home in a 14,000 square foot facility; home to 4 studios/classrooms, sculpting deck, Gift & Gallery Shop of Original Arts & Crafts, Lauritzen/Rush Galleries and McFarland Atrium Gallery; home to close to 500 members.

The organization has grown from the early years when its offerings were geared primarily to an adult community to adjust to the demographics of the community and providing various youth programs in many disciplines. Marco Island’s Center for the Arts prides itself in its outreach and accessibility to the public at large, residents and visitors alike.

This Center for the Arts prepares to plan its 40th anniversary in 2009 and with that the members, volunteers and community take pride. Everyone now knows you don’t have to be an artist to join the Marco Island’s Arts Center or to take part in the many opportunities it has to offer.
