| Hidden within a grove of oak trees, tucked away from the main road and surrounded by a moat, this castle is well protected.
Fortunately, its inhabitants are friendly.
Just a jog northeast of the Myakka River State Park stands Solomon’s Castle, another firm testament to that special blend of quirkiness and ingenuity found in so many Florida characters.
Solomon – as in eccentric homeowner/sculptor Howard Solomon – built this shiny castle by recycling discarded objects such as aluminum printing plates. No small job, considering the structure stands three stories high and covers 12,000 square feet.
It features more than 80 stained glass windows and numerous metal sculptures (which Solomon also created from scrap metal, oil drums, beer cans and the like).
The castle contains Solomon’s home, galleries and workshop, and is open for tours Tuesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. My parents visited recently, and were so impressed they could not stop talking about it. Thanks go to them for sharing all these great photos!
Adult tours cost $10, and children 12 and under cost $4. Solomon’s Castle is closed July through September, so plan accordingly.
Most guests decide to complete their tour with dinner at Solomon’s Boat in the Moat family restaurant. Either way, plan to spend the better part of a day in order to truly experience the castle.
For a truly one-of-a-kind getaway, opt for a weekend in the Blue Moon Room – a 500-square-foot efficiency apartment inside the castle, yours for less than $100 per night. As the moon rises, nature lovers can explore the grounds and wander beneath oak trees along Horse Creek. Solomon will even provide flashlights.
No matter how you choose to experience this Florida castle, get there while you can. This fascinating building and 70 acres of property are on the market for $2.5 million. Interested house hunters can view the listing here.
Solomon’s Castle is located at 4533 Solomon Road in Ona, Florida. Call (863) 494-6007 for more information. For other cool day trips in the nearby Sebring/Arcadia area, click here.
