A Permanent Wine Tasting in South Beach
April 21, 2008
Wish you knew more about your favorite wine? Want to discover new varieties? Looking for a unique night out? If you answered yes to any of these, you’ve got to visit Cavas Wine Tasting Room. They’ve got locations in Weston, Sawgrass Mall, Pembroke Pines and at Espanola Way in South Beach, the location I recently visited.

Tucked away on a quaint tree-lined street, Cavas is a wine bar with a difference. Upon entering, you purchase a debit card in five dollar increments. Then, you take your card into the wine room, where each bottle of wine stands behind a glass panel, with wines arranged by variety. Find the type of wine you want to sample and slide your debit card into the slot. You then have the choice of selecting a one, two or three ounce serving. Put your glass under the siphon, select the serving size and viola, your wine is dispensed into your glass. The cost of a serving varies by the wine selected, of course, but can range from $1 to about $10.

This is an excellent and cost efficient way to try new varieties of wine or to discover a new brand of your favorite chardonnay, merlot or pinot noir. Why pay $20 or more apiece to buy two or three bottles of wine to try when a mouthful or two will tell you whether or not you’re going to like it?

Comfortable seating areas and low tables provide areas in which to discuss your wine opinions with friends. You can also order cheese plates, appetizers and other nosh-type food. And if you find a wine you just can’t do without, bottles are for sale at the front of the shop. More than just a wine store, Cavas is a place where you can get comfortable and settle in for a few hours of bacchanalian fun with friends.
