Spooky State Park Events
October 19, 2009

There's something spooky going on in some of Florida's state parks this Halloween!

If you want to break away from the usual routine of trick-or-treating this Halloween, consider a fun event that's family friendly in a Florida state park. Perhaps you are one of those who like to stretch out your Halloween over the course of several days -- so this is even better since the state park events go on for a few nights.

Maybe you are just tired of handing out candy to the legions of costumeless high school juniors (complete with supermarket bags) that seem to always raid the Jack-O-Lantern on your porch.... more

Explore Princess Place Preserve in Flagler County
October 11, 2009

Not too many places can boast having a for-real princess as part of its history, but Flagler County can!

Originally called Cherokee Grove, this 1,500-acre property situated directly on the Matanzas River and Pellicer Creek is steeped in history dating back to the late 1700s. In 1887, an Adirondack-style lodge was built by Henry Cutting, a prominent businessman from New York, and is said to be the only lodge of its kind in Florida.

Henry Cutting's widow, Angela Mills Cutting Worden, eventually married Boris Scherbatoff, an exiled Russian prince, and she assumed the title of princess.... more

It's a Snake! Check out this Black Racer Video
September 25, 2009

While out on a hike a few weeks ago, I got a video of a black racer - one of the more common snakes in Florida. The black racer (or Southern Black Racer/Coluber constrictor priapus, if you prefer) isn't venomous, but can be a little agressive, especially when cornered.

Here's your chance to take a look at one up close without having to crawl around on the ground and get face to face with Mr.... more

Labor Day the Chassahowitzka Way
September 09, 2009

You know, I've said it before -- there are still plenty of places to get that classic Florida outdoor experience. They may be a little harder to find, and you might have to paddle, wade and claw your way through a little bit of mud to get there -- but they are there!

This past Sunday, Amanda and I launched our kayaks from the Chassahowitzka River Campground in search of some Labor Day weekend fun. There are times when I prefer a laid-back paddle, watching wildlife while gently floating along a scenic waterway somewhere.... more

Labor Day Outdoor Ideas
August 31, 2009

Well, Labor Day is right around the corner, and I know all of you are planning that last big summer weekend outing, right?

I like to use the Labor Day weekend to prep up for Florida hiking season, which kicks off when the weather starts to cool down in October. I typically hike year 'round, but in the cooler months you can go farther, faster, and be a lot more comfortable.

What about you? Got big plans? Well, if you haven't decided what to do yet, here are a few ideas that will have you grabbing your car keys and setting out for an adventure!

Some Surprises in the Ocala National Forest, Part Two
August 12, 2009

So, you watched the video and read my last post about the bear sighting in the Ocala National Forest. I really should start this post out like one of those television infomercials (but wait, there's more!) since I have another video from that day.

Thinking that the bear sighting was the end of my wildlife spotting for the trip, I headed around the loop leaving the Salt Springs Observation Trail, and a wild rabbit hopped in front of my vehicle and proceeded to munch on some grass a few feet away! This little guy actually let me get out of my vehicle and get really close without jumping into the bushes.... more

Celebrate Smokey Bear's 65th Birthday at Savannas Preserve State Park
August 06, 2009

65?  You are meaning to tell me that Smokey Bear has is turning 65 years old on August 9th?  Whoa, he looks pretty good for a bear that's spent decades educating folks about wildfires!

We've all seen him at some time or another -- in school and through extracurricular clubs like FFA or 4-H, at local parks -- heck, I've even seen Smokey at the mall! One thing's for sure, kids and parents both can benefit from Smokey's message about how we all can do our part to prevent wildfires.

The character "Smokey" was chosen by the United States Forest Service in 1944, appearing on illustrated posters where he spread the message about wildfire prevention and as a result has developed into a classic American icon.

Forest Sights and Sounds During a Summer Rain
July 30, 2009
Here in Florida we tend to get frequent afternoon showers in the summer months, which may put a damper on outings for most folks. Me? I love nothing more than a walk in the rain, especially in the woods. Now, don't take that to mean that I'm running out the door in a full-on downpour! I'm talking a nice, gentle rain (no lightning) with thunder off in the distance.... more

A Visit To Three Sisters Springs
June 29, 2009

What a wonderful way to spend a Monday!

My wife Amanda and I recently bought a couple of little 8-foot kayaks to throw in the back of our pickup, so we spent the day tooling around Kings Bay and Three Sisters Springs. These boats are perfect for an afternoon trip when winds are light and the trip distance is pretty short. Since the kayaks are so short, they definitely do not track as well in the water compared to larger boats, but they were manageable.... more

Kayaking Coldwater Creek
June 01, 2009

Coldwater Creek - sounds inviting, doesn't it?

Now that the temperatures have moved up into the 80s and higher, you should be ready to spend a little time on the water!  Paddling can be enjoyed pretty much year-round in Florida, but it's especially delightful during the summer months. If the conditions are right, and if you have a sit-on-top boat, I bet you can't resist jumping in and cooling off! Most of my trips are done solo, simply because I'm the guy that never seems to keep up with the rest. I get distracted easily, and if I see a good spot to jump out, I usually do.... more

Here's a secret from a Florida native - you can't say that you've experienced the Sunshine State until you have spent an afternoon cooling off in a crystal clear freshwater spring. Some people will tell you that Florida can be found in a bag of oranges, that it's all about the beach, theme parks or a multitude of other references. While those things are great, a dip in a bubbling cool spring on a warm day beats them all.... more

The Florida Strangler Fig
February 26, 2009

Sounds like something you would see in a horror movie, doesn't it?  Well, no need to worry - it's not that scary!

The Florida strangler fig is an interesting species. First, it starts out as an epiphyte, which is a type of living thing that attaches itself to another plant for support and usually does not kill the host. You might have heard the term "air plants," right?  Those are epiphytes! Some common types of epiphytes, or air plants, that you'll find in Florida are spanish moss, native orchids, ferns and bromielads.... more

Paddling Rock Springs Run
February 16, 2009

This past weekend I convinced my uncle to come along on a nice afternoon canoeing down Rock Springs Run in Apopka. After some discussion on how long it had been since either of us had been in a canoe (I'm more of a solo kayaker, myself) and who would be paddling in the bow and stern positions, I ended up in the in the bow providing the forward stroke and watching out for obstacles.

You see, Rock Springs Run has a pretty swift current, and although it is rated for paddlers with an intermediate skill level, the current combined with the sharp turns makes this waterway challenging.... more

Five Florida Trees You Should Know
January 07, 2009

I've always been interested in nature. As a young kid growing up in rural Florida, tree identification was a hobby of mine, both on my own and as part of my local high school forestry team.

Not to brag, but I was good at it!  I'm glad it's an interest that I have been able to continue to use, develop and share with others in my adult life.... more

A Quick Overnighter in Ocala
September 26, 2008

Now that the summer heat and humidity is starting to let up, you can bet that I'll be spending more and more time outside. My friends and family would agree that I already spend a lot of time outdoors, but after a few days of not being out on a trail somewhere or at a state park, I tend to get a little stir crazy.  During October and November I pretty much hide out in the woods, hiking and biking the days away, and spending nights relaxing by a warm campfire.... more

Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk
September 18, 2008

It is great places like the Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk that keep me from getting home on time.  Such was the case this past Labor Day weekend, where I spent three days in the Everglades.  For a guy like myself, the Everglades is an absolute dream destination!

My primary reason for coming to the Everglades was to attend the Clyde Butcher Muck-About, but I had planned out other stops around the area while traveling back and forth between the Big Cypress Gallery and Collier-Seminole State Park.... more

It's time for the Marion County Springs Festival!
September 12, 2008

Live entertainment, kayaking and guided hikes are just a few of the many events that will be going on during the annual Marion County Springs Fest.  Held on September 20th at Silver River State Park, the Springs Fest is a great opportunity to learn about the importance of preserving Florida's aquifer, and is a great excuse to get in some quality outdoors time as well!

We've all read the book or seen the movie "The Yearling", right?  One particular hike will stop at Jody's Spring as described in the novel. This 3-mile hike starts out at one of my favorite places in the Ocala National Forest, Silver Glen Springs, and will be led by author and hiking expert Sandra Friend.... more

I'm Back From The Muck-About!
September 02, 2008
Well, I've had one action-packed Labor Day weekend, that's for sure!  The Clyde Butcher Muck-About was a huge success, attracting well over 1,000 people to the Everglades.  It was great to see so many folks of all ages enjoying stomping around in the swamp - you can tell that they come away with a greater appreciation of the beauty and importance of Florida's natural environment.

When you walk through the doors at Big Cypress Gallery, prepare to be amazed.... more

Try Geocaching in Florida
August 20, 2008
A few years back, on a hike in the Withlacoochee State Forest, I came across a family of four crowed around a large piece of limerock about twenty feet off of the trail.  Thinking that they were lost, or had lost something, I went over to make sure that everything was OK.  I asked if everyone was alright and the family answered happily, "We're geocaching!"

It's All In The Details
July 28, 2008
People say that you can see and experience more by walking than by driving in an automobile, right?  You can take this a step further, and just sit down and look at things that normally are just given a glance in passing, or neglected altogether.

I did just this on a recent hike in the Marshall Swamp section of the Cross Florida Greenway, and was amazed and fascinated at the amount of plant and wildlife activity that I encountered.  My hike of 12 miles turned into a walk where I was paying more attention to the ground, and I got off course several times.... more
