Waterlefe Golf & River Club: Very Popular in Southwest Florida
March 17, 2008
The Ted McAnlis designed layout of Waterlefe Golf & River Club is appropriately named. This terrific course, located in Bradenton, FL has fantastic water views of the Manatee River and its tributaries on many of the championship holes. As you play along you’ll encounter lakes, ponds, canals and wetlands on all of the 18 holes. Bring plenty of ammo. There is a GPS monitor in each golf cart that will truly help with yardage and the lurking water locations so I’d recommend using it, especially during you’re first visit. The GPS really helps if you have not played the course before since it shows you what areas to aim at or avoid.

Word has gotten out on this relatively new course and their number of golf rounds has risen proportionately. Even though this is true, it never seems like you are poking along. The pace of play is very efficient. As the course winds through the wetlands across the many strings of dry land, you don’t seem to see that many golfers.

General Manager Doug Egly and Head Golf Professional Bryan Richard keep the place running and make sure that you’ll be treated like a “member for the day” during your visit. The condition of the course was very good the day I recently played, with the dormant greens rolled to a smooth and quick speed. Some down hill, down grain putts can be U.S. Open fast!

This track can play as tough as you’d like with five sets of tees and yardages from 6,908 (from the “Bobcat” tips) to 4,770 (off the “Otter” tees). I played there recently from the challenging “Eagle” tees (blue tees - 6,427), but due to the many well-bunkered fairways and the aforementioned water hazards it seemed much longer. My playing partners that day were a nice couple visiting from Kentucky who enjoyed play from the “Manatee” tees (4,449 yards) and the “Otter” tees, so everyone had their own level of challenges on this course.

The wildlife here is abundant and you are sure to spy plenty of herons, hawks and the occasional bobcat and otter. Waterlefe is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
