| The actual set of irons used by Jack Nicklaus to win the 1986 Masters tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club are now on display in the “Majors” rotunda at the World Golf Hall of Fame, located in St. Augustine. The four trophies from the four major championships – The Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship – can also be seen in the rotunda. The MacGregor irons from 1986 are exhibited along with the actual driver and sand wedge he used to win the 1975 Masters.
Also on display is a very special locket – one given to Jack after his first Masters win in 1963 and presented at the Masters Club Champions Dinner in 1964. The locket, which has Nicklaus’ name engraved on it along with the Augusta National Golf Club logo, shows that he is a member of the elite club started by my old boss, Ben Hogan, in 1952 – the Masters Club. I can only guess what an item like this is worth!
The new display called, “Jack Nicklaus: Golf’s Golden Champion”, features a simulation of Jack’s father Charlie’s drug store that he ran for so many years in Ohio where Nicklaus grew up. These items together with many other artifacts from the Jack Nicklaus Museum give a real insider’s view into Nicklaus’ life in golf and beyond.
I really love seeing these types of things and appreciate the time and effort it took to carefully gather all the items together and put them on display for all the true fans of golf to see. If you get anywhere near St. Augustine, I urge you to drop in to see this and many other exhibits at the World Golf Hall of Fame in the World Golf Village. You’ll be glad that you did!
