Where Can We Stay and Play on Sanibel for Less?
Asked by Michelle on November 05, 2009
Q: Where is the best value place to stay in Sanibel Island - have 8 yr old daughter and 6 yr old son. Daughter likes shells - where best for there? Not too pricy. Don't know the area at all.
A:

Hi there Michelle~

You are going to love love love Sanibel! Starting with Thanksgiving in late November, the rates are going to go up for the season but I do have my favorite family friendly, easier-on-the-wallet resorts to tell you about. First, try Sanibel Arms West. This place offers 2-bedroom condos right on the beach and in the summer, they were offering $99 a night deals! Now, you won't find that this time of year but they are a great value for the money. They have fully equipped kitchens, a dining room, separate bedrooms - the units are big. Talk with Steve - tell him Jill sent you! Perhaps that will help! Now, staying on the beach will always cost you more but if you can swing it, it's worth it over here. And, no matter where you shell on Sanibel, you will find AMAZING seashells. Just walk along the beach, search the 'dump line' (where the water crashes right before shore). Your kids will be in heaven. You can pick up a shelling guide at most of the stores over there. There's a grocery store called Jerry's (the only one on the island) and they have them. If you don't have a 'shelling bag' (a mesh bag with holes) they are only a few dollars. But you can use a bucket or a grocery plastic bag, too. I also like the West Wind Inn. They have a great pool and outside bar area where you can order pizza and drinks including non-alcoholic for the kids. And Caribe Resort is usually fair priced and they're family friendly as well. Here is a listing of accommodation options that include motels, hotels, and resorts. Now, anywhere you stay over here will be fine, really. It's an upscale island community with a very laidback atmosphere. You will feel safe everywhere. Also, take your kids to the Bailey Matthews Shell Museum. They can learn about shells, see them, touch them, and even explore their touch tank (I love their little gift shop but careful with the little ones in there as there is lots of breakables)! I also want to tell you about some fun restaurants to visit while you're here. The Lazy Flamingo is good and their kids meals come on frisbees which the kids can use on the beach. (Try their mesquite grilled grouper.) For pizza, it's Island Pizza all the way. And for a fun afternoon, drive over to Captiva (twenty minutes) and go to The Bubble Room. It's an institution over there but be prepared to wait. Get the chicken fingers for the kids, best you'll ever have. Homemade, breaded, and lovely! And save room for dessert, the cakes are wonderful and HUGE! Oh, and don't miss Biddles Bucket on Sanibel. The kids get a galvanized bucket on the way in full of toys to play with. And there's a game room in the back. I could write you a book on Sanibel! If you need more, just write me back.

Enjoy your time in the Sanibel sun!

Can You Tell Me About Eco-Tours in Florida?
Asked by Katharine Fletcher on November 03, 2009
Q: In March, for Canadian's who are travelling with youngsters during our Canadian March School Break, what eco-adventures are there in Natural Florida?
A:

Hello Katharine~

I have a few different eco-adventures to tell you about! And March is a fantastic time to come experience them all. First, down south, Everglades National Park is where you need to be. There is no place like it and did you know it's been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Property)! It's over 1.5 million acres of Old Florida beauty filled with all kinds of animals from alligator and crocodiles to white tailed deer and manatees. There are trails to walk, bike, hike, canoe, kayak and you can even take a boat tour or a tram tour. There is much to learn about this eco-system and its effect on Florida. In Central Florida, there is an area called St. Cloud in the middle of the state, surrounded by pine forests. Go to Forever Florida for their eco-safari and zipline across the pines, ride horses on safari through the marsh, take a coach tour, and more. It's nearly 5,000 acres of wilderness and it has a wildlife preserve, too. You can camp too. In Key Largo, there's an eco-tour that leaves from Dolphin Cove at mile marker 102. You can hop on boat and the captain will show you manatees, dolphins, the mangroves, how the island was formed, and even a sunset. Bring a cooler and a camera. It's called Captain Sterling's Eco-Tour. Over on Florida's west coast, it's not a real eco-tour per se, but it's worthy of exploring and it's beautiful - I'm talking about Caladesi Island. You have to take a ferry to get here and once you do, you will be in awe. You can paddle around through the mangroves, walk trails, swim, and relax on the beach, even in March.  In Saint Augustine, there is much to explore on land and sea, eco and historical. Take an eco-boat tour and view dolphins in the wild; explore ancient forts like Castillo de San Marcos, and don't miss going to Fort Matanzas, it's 12 miles south of the city and it's operated by the National Park Service. It's a Spanish fort on Rattlesnake Island and you take a ferry to get there. You'll get to ride a ferry, see wildlife, explore Rattlesnake Island, and get a history lesson - and the cost? FREE! It's the best deal around.  Hope this information helps! There is just so much to see outside, come explore for yourself! Thanks for writing,

Can You Recommend Some Hidden Gems In The Clearwater Area?
Asked by Ian on November 02, 2009
Q: HiyaWe have visited Florida 3 times in the last 5 years, and we will be returning again in Spring 2010.We are looking for more unusual things to do, not the usual theme park stuff. In the past we have had a great time at Weeki Wachee Springs, looking for Sharks teeth in Venice and fishing off the Clearwater pier.We will be stopping on Sand Key, Clearwater, and would love to know about those lesser known "little gems".We travel as a family, with an 8 year old, amy suggestions would be much appreciated.ThanksIan
A:

Hi there Ian~

I'm so glad to hear that you and your family are returning to Florida again! Since you'll be visiting the Clearwater area, I would definitely make the short trek up to Tarpon Springs where you can explore this neat Greek village and visit the sponge docks. And in Clearwater, I would definitely take a ride on Captain Nemo's Pirate Ship with your eight year old! It's a hoot!  They will take you out for a two hour tour and the pirates will entertain your child for sure. You'll probably see dolphins as well. And John's Pass in Madiera Beach is a great place to spend an afternoon or evening. You can eat right on the water, walk the long boardwalk and even go parasailing (yes, even your eight year old can do it)! You can also hop on a head boat from John's Pass and do some fishing in the Gulf (a head boat takes out lots of people at a time to go fishing on a large comfortable vessel).  My sons love that. Oh, and if you can drive about an hour, you simply must experience Homosassa Springs. Their state wildlife park is famous for its clear waters, manatees, 10,000 fish spring, and beauty! You can take a guided boat ride or just view them from their floating observatory called the Fish Bowl. It's truly amazing. Ok, one more place to tell you about is down in Bradenton, not far at all. It's Mixon's Fruit Farm. They say no visit to Florida is complete without a grove tour and lots of sampling! You have to try their famous Orange Swirl ice cream for sure and some fresh squeezed Florida orange juice. It's a downhome kind of place and super fun for the entire family. Here's a link to the driving directions from the Clearwater area. If I think of any more (and I'm sure I will, I'll let you know. Have a blast and thanks for writing.

s Sarasota a Good Place for Families?
Asked by Ella on November 01, 2009
Q: Is Sarasota a good city for a family with young children? How are the schools and crime? Do you recommend any other cities in Florida?
A:

Hi Ella~

As the Family Insider, I can tell you that Sarasota is super family friendly. There is so much to do in this area and beautiful Sarasota Bay provides lots of great opportunities for fun in the sun. Their beaches are among the finest in the country. I cannot give you statistics about neighborhoods or schools as that's out of my realm but I'm certain you can Google that and find what you seek. If you need places to go and things to see in Sarasota, I'm definitely the right one to ask! For instance, right off shore is the top ranked beach for families in all of Florida, it's Siesta Key. The water is calm, the shore slopes nice and gentle, and it's just ideal for little ones. I'm also attaching a listing of great places to take your young ones. I especially love the G Wiz Science Museum, you will too, for its hands on activities for all ages.

We Have Questions About Finding Wheelchair Rentals and Vans For Wheelchairs. Can You Help?
Asked by pat burley on October 28, 2009
Q: we plan to hire a van when we arrive, could you tell me do they have disabled vans? also is there a chance i could hire an electric wheelchair and have it waiting for me at the airport? thank you,
A:

Hello there Pat~

You can definitely reserve a van suitable for your needs. I don't know what area you are flying into but I do know that in the area of Central Florida, I always recommend Mears Transportation. They're one of the few businesses that have been around seemingly forever (since 1939 anyway!) and they are reliable. They certainly offer handicap accessible vehicles. As far as chair rentals, once again I don't know your area, but serving Central and South Florida is Mobility Wheelchair Rentals. They offer pick up and delivery. Lastly, I'm attaching a wonderful article from here at VISIT FLORIDA that lists all kinds of companies that can help you get around comfortably while you are here. Thanks for writing in and I hope you have a most memorable, enjoyable Florida vacation! Come on down, the weather is fine!

Where To Stay In Miami With Two Little Ones In Tow?
Asked by Caroline Oza on October 26, 2009
Q: Can you tell me which area of Miami is the best to stay in with children? We have 2 girls of 1 an 4 years and want to visit in Jan/Feb. Also, when is the worst time for mosquitos? They really go for my husband!!
A:

Hi there Caroline~

I can definitely tell you a variety of places to stay in Miami with little ones. First, I love the Doral Marriott Resort. They have nice grounds, a great pool, and they are centrally located so you won't have to drive far. On the same grounds is Marriott's Villas at Doral. They offer two bedroom villas, perfect for families, with full kitchens and plenty of room to make yourself at home. If you want to stay up on Miami Beach, there's a place I like to go called Crystal Beach Suites and Health Club. Don't let the word suites scare you, this is an older property but their pool is great for kids and they're on the beach. It's older but it's still nice and their rooms offer plenty of space which I love. As far as mosquitos, in winter time your husband should be fine. They can be brutal in the summer. My little one gets attacked at recess from school! They like him, too! Buy a can of spray when you arrive or order a bottle of Avon's Skin So Soft - it works too and it smells nice. I also heard that if you put a dryer sheet in your pocket, the mosquitos stay away. I learned this in May while camping. The owner of the campground swears by it!  And it can't hurt to smell laundry fresh all day...LOL. Have a wonderful time. If you need places to see and do while you're here, write me back. Miami is my hometown and I'd love to write you a book on where to go and what to see.

What's The Safest Route From Key Biscayne To Key West?
Asked by luann smith on October 17, 2009
Q: My husband wants to go to Key Biscayne and we will be coming in from the west on 836 to I95 S then leaving on 1 south towards Key West. Is it safe to travel that way? We don't want to end up in the "bad" part of town. And every town has them, we're not being over anxious, we've ended up in them before. Just trying to plan ahead. Thanks.
A:

Hello Luann~

US1 is definitely a safe, straight shot to Key West from Key Biscayne but you will have to deal with lots of traffic lights. I'd catch the Florida Turnpike south as soon as you can. The Turnpike ends in Florida City, the gateway to the Florida Keys. The nice thing is you don't have to worry about missing your exit as it will drop you off right at the end! Whether you choose to take US1 or the Turnpike, you'll end up here in Florida City. From here, it's just a straight 20-mile stretch to Key Largo. Let me tell you something else, if you go 'Cardsound Road' instead of US1 (you'll see a huge sign showing Cardsound Road {Toll Road} turns to the left) about 10 minutes down this road is a little hangout called Alabama Jack's. It's on the mangroves (water) and this place the THE BEST conch fritters EVER! It will be a nice little stop. Many doctors and lawyers hop on their Harley's and ride here on the weekends, but trust me, I come here with my kids! It's great! It's been on Food TV! And they have live music on the weekends. Whether you take US1 or Cardsound, you can't get lost. Both roads take you to Key Largo. You can't go wrong! If you need more advice about where to eat, sleep, drink, walk, beach, sail, or dive in the Keys, let me know.

Any Ideas For A Quick Vacation For A Busy Mom?
Asked by amy on October 16, 2009
Q: I love to travel but unfortantually with my busy schedule working at Narconon drug rehab center and going to school and being a full time mom I have very little time to go on a vacation. does anyone have any advice on how to take a great vacation with having very little time to do it?
A:

Hi Amy~

Being a full time mom AND working AND going to school? I have been down that long, winding road. You can do it! It will get easier! But in the meantime, here are few of my save-yourself-from-going-crazy tips: choose a resort or nice hotel that is close to your house (within two hours) and be choosy! Find one that offers a nice pool, a spa, a children's program (if you're taking the kids), or a wonderful onsite restaurant - whatever appeals to you most. Look for a bargain! Fall is the ideal time to go for your getaway - before Thanksgiving. You need not spend a lot of money. Just hanging out in your pajamas, away from the house and laundry list of things to do is time well spent on yourself. I wish I knew what area you were in as I could recommend resorts to go to. Treat yourself to a little something special whether it be room service one evening, a manicure, a few hours shopping, or just sleep in (if you leave the kids at home)! If you write me back and tell where you are, I can help out with specifics and help to find you a good deal. You deserve a big pat on the back - it's not easy but it will all be worth it.

Does Florida Require Child Seats In Taxi Cabs?
Asked by Mads Laumann on October 16, 2009
Q: We are going to Florida in November this year. This is our first trip to the USA and at the same time our first trip in an RV ( motorhome). We have a son who is 2 years old. He of course needs to sit in a children seat, no question there. The problem is that we wouldn't bring one from home, but we need to go to hotel and to RV pickup place in a taxi. What do we do there? Is it allowed to drive with a 2 year old without a seat in the US? Thanks in advance. Mads and family.
A:

Hello there Mads~

The child restraint laws in Florida are no different whether you're in a taxi or car so yes, you need a child restraint seat. If you don't want to bring yours (and you might want to think about that as if yours fits into a stroller, you can wheel it right up to the airplane door and they'll take it from you at the last minute and have it waiting for you when you land right by the plane door). Now, there are loads of baby gear rental companies all around Florida and many will bring the gear you need right to you, including the airport, hotel, RV place or wherever. Here is a listing of baby gear rental companies throughout Florida since I don't know what area you'll be arriving to. But think about bringing your own. It sounds like a pain but at least you know your child will be comfortable and germ free in their own seat. And you know it will fit perfectly. Your child can also sit in the seat on the airplane.

My Wife Loves Shopping At Boardwalks, Know Of Any On The East Coast?
Asked by Ben Etherton on October 15, 2009
Q: My wife and I are planning a trip to Florida next April. We are traveling down the East coast. She loves those Boardwalk type shops (lots of little shops together)Do you have any suggestions where we might find these types of shopping areas?
A:

Hello Ben~

I have a few suggestions for you and your wife, although shopping is not area of expertise (who has time when you're chasing two boys who love to wrestle 24 hours a day)! With that in mind, in addition to my suggestions, I'm also going to recommend that you contact our Shopping, Arts, & Entertainment Insider here at VISIT FLORIDA, Kanika Jelks. Now, the first idea that came to my mind was Daytona Beach. They have a nice boardwalk area with shops and restaurants. They also have an area called OceanWalk Village, now it's not a boardwalk per se, but it's on the Atlantic Ocean right next to the boardwalk! They have movies, eateries, coffee houses, shops, and a great view for sure. I did find this article on Florida's nostalgic boardwalks for you, too! In the article, one of its listings is Hollywood Broadwalk (not Boardwalk but Broadwalk)! It's a couple miles long and you can skate, walk, or stroll along the lovely Atlantic shores ducking in and out of all kinds of interesting places. I remember finding a great little watering hole that served up fresh oysters (no kids in tow obviously)! Hope this helps, and be sure to ask Kanika for her suggestions as well.

Looking For A Beach Closest To Houston! Where To Go?
Asked by Angela on October 15, 2009
Q: We live in Houston, Texas. Which beach in Florida is the closest to us?
A:

Hi there Angela~

The area of Florida's Emerald Coast is going to be closest to you in Texas. It's right on the top, by the Alabama line. And I have to tell you from experience, these beaches are soooo gorgeous! They are white as snow, no kidding, and the dunes are just beautiful. They're so white because they're made from Appalachian quartz, not sand - and did I already mention how soft they are? Like baby powder! Pensacola is probably the closest beach but once you're in this area, you should definitely explore. All the beaches are well worthy of the highest recommendation. In Pensacola, try staying at the Portofino Island Resort and Spa. The accommodations are top notch with full kitchens and balconies.  And check out St. Andrew's State Park in Panama City. It was voted 'Best Beach' in 1995 and well deserved. You will go crazy over these beaches in North Florida. There is nothing like it here in South Florida where I am. And it doesn't get hot under your feet which makes long walks on hot days most enjoyable. Hope this helps! Come on over! You'll love it here!

We Need Accommodations For 20-30 in South Florida. Any Suggestions?
Asked by Claudia Boissonneault on October 06, 2009
Q: Hello, We operate a group travel agency in Quebec, Canada. My request is for a family of about 30-40 pax who would like to travel to South Florida (Approx. Dec 27th-28th for 2 weeks). We already have the bus figured out but we would like to book accomodation. Appartments or a big house would be great. They are price-sensitive and would like to be located near the beach. Do you have suggestions, recommendations,info...Thanks and have a great day! Claudia BoissonneaultClub Select Tours/ Groupe Tourcarwww.tourcar.com
A:

Hello Claudia~

I have a few suggestions for your crew of 20-30 people looking for units in South Florida. First, since the week between Christmas and New Year's is super busy, be sure and reserve now. Just a little north of Miami are several smaller towns on the ocean that are likely less expensive than staying in Miami (and the beaches are nice too)! There are condos in Delray Beach called Hamilton House Oceanfront Condos where all the units are individually owned so they might all be different prices but definitely negotiable. Here's a listing of more accommodation options in this area. On Miami Beach, there is a condominium style building called Crystal Beach Suites and Health Club that offers one bedroom units right on the beach and I know off season, they are only $99 a night. Carriage House Resort in Deerfield Beach has about 30 units from motel rooms to 2-bedroom units and it's a nice comfortable clean place. You can try them for sure. And you're sure to get a discount for this many units no matter where you go! Write back if you have no luck and we'll go to Plan B. Good Luck!!

Can You Recommend Warm Beaches And Affordable Accommodations In December?
Asked by cristiana on October 06, 2009
Q: Hi!we're the european family visiting florida for the first time...thanks in advance for your tips. They're precious for us. We're arriving in Miami, renting a car, going to Orlando. We'll visit disney during 4 daysand head to Sarasota for 7 days. We still have 7 nights in Florida and a short family budgetNow the problem is:We'd like to go to Key West or somewhere else as hot and sandy as the these keys look like. But it seems super expensive!!! The least expensive are around 200$/night,which doesn't fit my budget.Do you have any other alternative for us? Maybe another warm sandy place? I didn't know december was the super high season there...and we need to find a place from the 24th till 30th december somewhere nice and warm...my kids are 5 and 10 years old. I'm not looking for luxury. It has to be ultra clean, secure and somewhat comfortable. we're pretty open to all kind of different experiences. Eating an american hamburger and staying in a little house (wood cute in the beach)would be heaven and super exotic for us!any hint?
A:

Hi there Cristiana~

Yes, December is high season as the rest of North America is in the midst of snow storms, the only ice we see in South Florida is in our drinks (as we're lying on the beach, of course). But still, you can find affordable accommodations, you just have to do lots of homework. But I think since you're flying in and out of Miami, and you're already spending a week in the area of Sarasota, you should try the beaches of the east coast around the Hollywood Beach area (north of Miami). If you look at the map to the left of the link I just attached, you'll see there are several smaller towns near here like Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Pompano...to get the best price, check each area as Christmas to New Year's is going to be the most expensive anywhere you go. I'm also attaching a listing of accommodations in the Hollywood area. Now, don't give up on the idea of the Keys, yes Key West can be pricey but there are miles and miles of other Keys to stay on  - from Key Largo (the northernmost Key about 45 minutes south of Miami) to Islamorada (30 minutes south of Key Largo) and my favorite key, Marathon. It's so family friendly and there's so much to do like the Turtle Hospital and Sombrero Beach and the Crane Point Museum and Nature Center is great to explore! Here's a listing of accommodations in Marathon including Cocoplum Beach and Tennis, they generally start at $125 per night and they have their own private beach. I can't think of any place off the top of my head that is super affordable that week, but I'll keep my ears open for you. Also, when I do find great deals, I post a blog about it so be sure to keep an eye on those. I know of a resort in St Petersburg that is offering $50 a night rooms from November 20-30 (a 75% savings)! It's the Tradewinds Resort's 'Thanks And Give Back Rate' where monies go to help a local children's hospital for those ten days. So, I promise, I'll keep looking for you!

Can You Help Us Find A Condo Rental For This Winter?
Asked by Timothy on October 04, 2009
Q: Hello Jill,We are planning to take a family vacation in FL this winter and would like to rent a condo rather than stay in a resort or motel. Could you please give me any suggestion (or website) that I can find condo rental info? There are many scam site online. Thanks Timothy, TX
A:

Hi there Timothy~

You can search for vacation rentals whether it be condo-style or home rentals, right here at VISIT FLORIDA. First, search for the area you want to stay at. Then click on 'hotels and places to stay.' A list will come up that includes everything from bed & breakfasts to hotels - as well as vacation rentals. If I knew what area you were staying in, I would have included the link for you. I can tell you that there is one called Resort Quest that does rental units around Florida. This particular link is for their offices in Sarasota but click on their website to view additional destinations. In addition Tim, I know of many resorts that can offer you a fully furnished unit that would include a full kitchen, living and dining areas, separate bedrooms, and all the amenities of a wonderful resort like swimming, tennis, golf, beaches, and such. But I need to know what area you seek! For instance, if you're looking for the Cocoa Beach area, try Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort. Or in Orlando, try Liki Tiki Village. Families definitely need to spread out and have lots of room and these are just two of the condominium style resorts that offer what you need.

Where Can I Find A Listing Of Events For Kissimmee?
Asked by Lisa L on October 03, 2009
Q: We are planning a family vacation in the fall of 2011. How can I find out what other major events will be happening in Kissimmee about the same time? I would like an idea of how crowded the hotels will be, etc.
A:

Hi there Lisa~

There are a few ways to find a listing of events happening in Florida, although I'm not sure how many will be listed that far in advance (fall 2011). Right here at VISIT FLORIDA, we have an 'Events Calendar' that you can view anytime and it's constantly updated. I've attached the entire listing of events as well as an Orlando specific listing. You can also check with the concierge of your hotel. They will have a list of events in the area, too. I can definitely tell you from experience that fall is a WONDERFUL time to visit Orlando or any other part of the state! The crowds have gone and the weather cools off, it is just so pleasant. My family loves to do the theme parks in November (and also January). I am certain you will too! Thanks for writing.

Is It Worth Coming To Florida In The Winter For The Beaches? Is It Too Cold?
Asked by bolli cristiana on October 01, 2009
Q: I'm planning to go to Florida with my family this Christmas. It's our first time. We live in a cold country with no beaches. Where are the warmest beaches during this time of the year? where is the best place to stay? Clear water or Key west? Should we combine 4 days near disney and 10 days by the beach? Is it worth going even on winter to the beaches? I see soooo many options is just impossible to find my way...please, could you give us a hand?
A:

Hello Bolli~

Come to Florida in the winter for sure! That's what we're famous for! Nice folks just like you come to relax in the warm sunshine because our average winter temperatures are just toasty in many cities! Check out these average temperatures in December - in farenheit:

  • Daytona Beach: High 70°, Low 50°
  • Fort Myers: High 76°, Low 55°
  • Jacksonville: High 67°, Low 43°
  • Key West: High 77°, Low 67°
  • Miami: High 77°, Low 62°
  • Orlando: High 73°, Low 51°
  • Pensacola: High 63°, Low 45°
  • Panama City: High 64°, Low 40°
  • Tallahassee: High 66°, Low 40°
  • Tampa: High 72°, Low 52°
  • West Palm Beach: High 76°, Low 59°

I would definitely do several days in Orlando and visit the famous theme parks like Walt Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal Orlando Resort. They are fantastic and the temperature is so pleasant to walk around and enjoy everything from rides to shops and restaurants. You can see the west coast AND Key West if you desire. From Orlando, it's only a little over two hours to get to the west coast and its glorious beaches. It's a must. For warmer weather, keep south though. Like the beaches of Fort Myers, Sanibel and Captiva. And seeing is believing! They are heavenly I tell you, heavenly! From this southwest area of Florida, you drive to Miami in about three hours. From Miami, it's another three hours to Key West. OR, you can take the Key West Shuttle boat from Fort Myers to Key West and be there in a few hours. Bring an overnight bag and stay a day or two then just catch another boat back to Fort Myers whenever you are ready. As far as where to stay, you may want to try to stay onsite at whichever theme park you prefer. The convenience factor is huge. But if you want extra space, try a resort like Liki Tiki Village or perhaps The Fountains. In Fort Myers, you have many options for accommodations but check out the Outrigger Beach Resort or the Pink Shell Beach Resort. In Key West, you can stay in one of many bed & breakfast places, but for families, I prefer to send them to resorts with room to stretch out and have a little privacy. For instance, 1800 Atlantic Condos are on the water and plenty big. For more ideas, check out this listing. I hope all this info convinces you to come to Florida's warm beaches in December. You'll be glad you did - and bring the sunscreen!

We Want To Stay On The West Coast, But What's Best For Young Kids?
Asked by Rhonda Rushforth on September 28, 2009
Q: Hi Jill, I am hoping you can lead me in the right direction. I am planning a family holiday for Christmas. We are wanting to stay on the beach perferably on the gulfcoast. I am totally overwhelmed by the endless choices. Are you able to recommend a city or beach?? Please help me, I am so lost. I am travelling with 3 young children,7,5 and 10 months. Hoping you can help me. Hope to hear from you soon,Rhonda
A:

Hi there Rhonda~

I have excellent suggestions for you and your family of young children. The gulf coast is a great way to go so your instincts are right on the mark. I would recommend either Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel Island, or the area of Clearwater Beach. My family travels to the west coast of Florida frequently as we just love it! The beaches are so beautiful and ideal for kids. On Sanibel, they're famous for their seashells. They are everywhere! Every shape, size, color...it is simply incredible. There is also plenty of fun things to do on the island and nearby from the J.N. Ding Darling Nature Reserve to the local library and shell museum. In the nearby town of Naples, there's a great zoo called Caribbean Gardens. It's not your typical zoo - you can ride a boat and see monkeys on monkey island! In Clearwater, you have to go see the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. It's fantastic with its hands on activities for kids. You can't go wrong with wherever you choose on Florida's Gulf Coast. Have a blast!

Any Suggestions For A Three-Year Old Who Loves Trains?
Asked by Jayne on September 28, 2009
Q: We have a 3 yr old who is crazy on trains - any ideas to keep his happy? We are in Florida 09-24 Oct 2009. Thanks.
A:

Hi there Jayne~

I have a few suggestions of places for you to take your son who loves trains! First, in Miami right next to Miami Metrozoo is the Gold Coast Railroad Museum. You can hop on a real train, take a ride, maybe even sit in the cab, and you'll definitely see exhibits, toys, train apparel, and be able to build trains, and more! And if you're in Florida a little earlier, Disney has a train tour that's traveling around the U.S. to promote its upcoming movie, "A Christmas Carol" and the train will be in Miami on October 16-18 and in Jacksonville on October 20. Here's a complete schedule. In the city of Parrish, you can visit the Florida Railroad Museum. It's a little north of Bradenton and a little south of St. Petersburg. On the 24th of October, they are even having a special "Pumpkin Patch Express" event! I'm attaching the link so you can read all about it! They are going to have face painting, train rides, and a whole day of fun activities are planned. This event SELLS OUT, so buy your tickets online now if you can go. One more place to tell you about is on Florida's gulf coast near Fort Myers, it's called Seminole Gulf Railway and they do evening and day time train rides and tours. They are also having their own Pumpkin Patch Express on the very weekend you are here! Check out all the details. Have a great time exploring trains in Florida!

Can You Name The Top Twenty Must-Sees For First Time 'Mature' Visitors in February?
Asked by Cherri Odens on September 28, 2009
Q: What are the top 20 things to see and do in Florida in February for over middle aged, first time visitors.
A:

Hello there Cherri~

This is a very tall order! I had to call in several other of our VISIT FLORIDA Insiders for this one and lucky for us, they came through with their ideas (since my area of expertise normally involves toddlers, tweens, or teens)! Anyhow, here are our collective Top Twenty Not-To-Be-Missed Florida Experiences For First Time, Mature Visitors:

Bok Tower in Lake Wales (courtesy of Kevin Mims, our Outdoor & Nature Insider)

Big Shoals State Park in White Springs - the only Class III Rapids in Florida! (courtesy of Kevin Mims)

Attend a Carillon concert on the grounds of Bok Tower Gardens followed by lunch at Chalet Suzanne, Lake Wales (courtesy of Hilda Mitrani, our Off The Beaten Path Insider)

See the Mermaid show at Weeki Wachee or a boat ride on any of the springs (courtesy of Hilda Mitrani, Off The Beaten Path Insider)

Visit to Spanish Colonial House living museum in St. Augustine (courtesy of Hilda Mitrani, Off The Beaten Path Insider). The entire city of Saint Augustine is a must-see

Swim with the manatees in Crystal Springs (courtesy of Lauren Tjaden our Beaches & Adventure Insider) She said her mom did this in her 70s!

Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride (courtesy of Lauren Tjaden our Beaches & Adventure Insider).

Watch a space shuttle launch if possible, if not visit Kennedy Space Center anyway!
Antique hunting in Mount Dora (courtesy of Terry Ward, our Luxury Insider)
Catch a concert or just stroll at Leu Gardens in Orlando (courtesy of Terry Ward)
Have dessert in the dessert room at Bern's in Tampa (courtesy of Terry Ward)
In fact, I beg of you, have dinner here too, it's the most delicous steakhouse I've ever been to. They have their own farm, grow their own vegetables, make their own dressings, have live fish tanks in the kitchen, take a tour of the kitchen after dinner, and they have the largest wine selection anywhere.
Ride an airboat across the beautiful Everglades
Walk along the beaches of Sanibel Island, world-renown for its seashells - it's one of the top shelling spots in the entire world. You won't believe it!
Pay a visit to Walt Disney World - choose your park, they are all wondeful, my favorite is still the Magic Kingdom, even without kids, it's a blast. Make reservations to dine at Cinderella's Castle or for a magical night, dine at Victoria and Albert's in the Grand Floridian.
See SeaWorld! Oh yeah, this place is so much fun and a must-see!
Go diving in the Florida Keys - it's the only living coral reef in all of North America - and it will blow your mind. Try snorkeling at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo.
Watch the sunset in Key West.
Attend the Coconut Grove Art Show (one of the largest in the nation) and stroll alongside Biscayne Bay. This event is always over Presidents' Day Weekend.
Have lunch or dinner at Joe's Stone Crab on Miami Beach.
Well, there you have it. But I have to tell you, it was DIFFICULT to choose only twenty! You can also go deep sea fishing in Destin or ride horses on the beach at Amelia Island or swim with the dolphins at the Miami Seaquarium, or...if you wait a few months, be sure and tube the Ichetucknee River!
Have a wonderful time in Florida come February.

Where Can We Find House Rentals In The Area Of Anna Maria Island & Orlando?
Asked by Nicole on September 27, 2009
Q: We are coming to Florida in October - thinking of heading for a week to Anna Maria Island and then to Orlando to go to theme parks and water parks. We have a 2 year old and a 7 year old (both girls). We want to stay in houses/condos. What would you recommend for searching for places to stay...also, what would you recommend we see in these areas. Any tips for traveling with children of these ages would be appreciated. Thanks.
A:

Hello Nicole~

You can have your choice of condos or vacation home rentals in the area of Anna Maria Island as well as Orlando. There are also many resorts that offer condominium-style accommodations - meaning they have multiple bedrooms, living and dining areas, fully equipped kitchens, and they are fully furnished. In the area of Anna Maria Island (which is a lovely barrier island at the mouth of Tampa Bay), Paradise Vacation Rentals offers what you seek. Also, ResortQuest offers vacation rentals not only on Anna Maria Island but all around Florida including the Orlando area. As far as things to see in this area, I'm attaching a link so you can see the complete listing. I would definitely recommend the G.Wiz Science Museum in Sarasota. This place is filled with all kinds of interactive exhibits and hands-on fun that your girls will love (and you will too)! And don't miss the Mote Aquarium where you can see manatees, sting rays, and get even more hands on with their touch tanks and such. There's also a really neat place called Mixon Fruit Farm that's famous for fresh fruit and their orange swirl ice cream. You can also hop on a tram and tour the grove. The two-year old might not sit through the tram tour but she will love the grounds and the sweet treats. I'm nearly certain you already know what you want to see in Orlando (Disney's Magic Kingdom for sure!) but if you need a few more suggestions, I can tell you that my boys love the Pirate Adventure Dinner Show and the Green Meadows Petting Farm. And since you'll be there in October, you must must must check out Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Your girls can wear their costumes and trick or treat around the Magic Kingdom! All the characters will be there too! And there is no line and no waiting for any of the rides! You've got about a 2 1/2 hour drive to Orlando from the west coast so have a portable DVD player at the ready as it is a boring drive. You CAN cut the drive in half by stopping at Dinosaur World along the way. It's right off I-4, just look for the big orange T-Rex! It's a nice shady place to walk around and see over 150 life size dinosaurs. They also have a playground and you can bring in your own food and drinks and have a picnic (tables are available). One of those resort accommodation places that I love so much in the Orlando area is Liki Tiki Village. Their pool area is amazing! It's so much fun you could skip the parks altogether. Hope all this information helps you have a super fantastic Florida vacation. Thanks for writing!

What Are Some Family Friendly Beaches In South Florida?
Asked by Andrea on September 23, 2009
Q: Wondering what the best family friendly beaches are in Southern Florida?
A:

Hi Andrea~

There are so many family friendly beaches in south Florida it will be easy to give you a few choices. On the west coast, the beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel are outstanding. And on Sanibel, you have a zillion metric tons of seashells that are simply spectacular! (And all those shells keep the kids happy and occupied.) Now, it may not be considered south Florida per se, but Siesta Key also on the west coast (near Sarasota) is an award-winning family friendly beach. It has those nice gentle sloping shores that are ideal for toddlers and the water is usually fine, clear, with little waves. On the east coast down south, there is a great little beach called Matheson Hammock. It's in an area known as Coral Gables and the views are just so pretty and there's a lagoon that's ideal for swimming. I've attached a short article for you to check it out. Hollywood Beach is pretty darn fun too. My sister loves to go there with her family (as do I). There is also a long boardwalk that you can walk or bike or stroll along right by the water dotted with restaurants and shops. Ok, one last one to tell you about is down in the Florida Keys, it's Sombrero Beach in Marathon - and the drive there is half the fun. They have picnic areas a nice beach and it's roped off for swimming. Enjoy your beach time!

We're Looking For A Vacation Home To Rent On Florida's West Coast, Can You Help?
Asked by Christine Skipsey on September 19, 2009
Q: Please can you help us find a 3 bed villa with pool in safe gated community? We are flying into Miami next July for 2 weeks and would like to be near Fort Myers beach area,as we have a 4 year old with us safety and a friendly neighbourhood is our priority.Hope you can point us in the right direction, many thanks Christine
A:

Hello Christine~

For vacation home rentals in the Fort Myers area, I would recommend Resort Quest. They offer a variety of privately owned homes as well as condominium resort rentals in the area of Fort Myers, Captiva Island, and beyond. Another good one to try is Universal Vacations. They also specialize in the area of Florida's west coast and have been maintaining and renting properties since 1987. I am sure they can help you find exactly what you seek. You will love this part of Florida. It's definitely one of my family's favorite places to escape, year after year. If you need anything else, just give me a holler!

How About A Beach Vacation In December? Where To Go?
Asked by dana blankenship on September 18, 2009
Q: We are looking for a place to go in December, my kids, 9 & 12, are wanting to go to the beach, where would you recommend for a family of 4 in December.
A:

Hi there Dana~

If you're looking for a beach vacation in the middle of winter, Florida is definitely where you want to be! With average high temperatures for December such as 76° in West Palm Beach, Fort Myers, and the Florida Keys, you just have to come south! For instance, you can stay on the beaches of Sanibel and Fort Myers and enjoy the west coast of Florida and its spectacular beaches that are famous for an abundance of seashells. If you choose the west coast, there are lots of choices for accommodations, but I do have several resorts that I tend to recommend for families. These first ones are on the Island of Sanibel: Casa Ybel Resort, Sundial, and Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa. I also love the Pink Shell Beach Resort on Fort Myers Beach. Now, I also love the Florida Keys and although their beaches don't compare to the beaches of the west coast, the Keys are just such a unique destination and offer plenty to see and do (along with relaxing on a beach). For instance, at Hawks Cay Resort about an hour north of Key West, you can do it all without every leaving your resort, including have a dolphin interactive experience! I'm also attaching an article about visiting The Florida Keys With Kids - just know that the Cheeca Lodge that the article speaks of is not in service at the moment due to a fire last year. While you're in the Keys, don't miss John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo where you can ride a glass bottom boat or go snorkeling; and at Theater of the Sea in Islamorada, the lagoon area is so cool filled with rays and such - and the dolphins are awesome! So there you have it, Dana, my favorite spots to hang out in December by the water. Have a great Florida vacation!

Can You Suggest A Vacation Destination For Our Family From Orlando?
Asked by Sally March on September 16, 2009
Q: Any suggestions for family travel, week before Thanksgiving, 2 boys ages 4 & 6, we are from Orlando - so count that out!
A:

Hello there Sally~

Since you live in Orlando, I would definitely recommend a beach getaway since you don't get to see those glorious water views from the middle of the state! Have you ever traveled to the Destin area or to the Beaches of South Walton? I'm talking good for your soul, good for your pocket book, and good family times! Here is a link to a video so you can see how beautiful it is for yourself. There are plenty of accommodation choices up this way but I'll let you in on my Insider secret stash of favorites: Emerald Grande Resort in Destin is comfort and luxury rolled into one fabulous place. Kids programs, onsite restaurants, heated pools, adult only sun deck, shops, awesome views...this place has it all along with roomy units with full kitchens. Along the Beaches of  South Walton, check out Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort and also rentals from the Cottages at Seaside. Up this way, there is plenty to do besides enjoying the whitest beaches you've ever seen (the sand is made up of ancient quartz and that is why it's white as snow). You can visit the Gulfarium and see the dolphin shows, marine mammals, and here's a link to other adventures in that area including the Big Kahuna Waterpark, fishing piers, and more.

School Calendars: Can You Tell Me What Days The Schools Are Out?
Asked by Murielle on September 14, 2009
Q: Hi Jill,I had a customer (I'm represent the Naples, Marco Island, Everglades CVB in the UK) ask when the school holidays are in Florida as they want to avoid them. They plan to travel in February/March 2010. Can you help? I tried to google it and find it on Visit Florida's website but no luck. Thank you! Best wishes, Murielle
A:

Hi there Murielle~

I can definitely tell you where you can find the Florida school schedules. Now, the first thing you need to know is that there is not one master schedule that each school follows; it depends on the county and whether it's a public or private school (and there are 67 different counties in the Sunshine State). So I'm attaching links to a few of the largest counties and those that attract lots of visitors (like Central Florida). For Miami-Dade County Public Schools here is the link to the 2009/2010 calendar for elementary and secondary schools. Osceola County (Kissimmee and surrounding area); Duval County includes the Jacksonville area; Monroe County is all of the Florida Keys; and Bay County Public Schools includes Panama City and Panama City Beach. For a listing of all the counties in Florida, in case I didn't list the area you are most interested in, here's a link that will show you the entire state by area. College breaks are different still! (I know, I know, how confusing!) If you want to plan around spring breaks for instance, you might want to check out these college calendars: here is the University of Florida (in Gainesville); University of Miami; and Florida State University in Tallahassee. If you have any more questions, feel welcome to ask, anytime! Thanks for writing.

What Are Some Luxury Resorts With Cool Pools For The Kids?
Asked by Eduardo on September 13, 2009
Q: Hi,could you recommend a luxury hotel with great kids activities and water slides, etc in florida? We live in Miami and are planning a family trip for december anywhere in florida (but in Miami) .... (No Orlando please .... way too many people this time of the year) Thanks!
A:

Hello Eduardo~

As far as fantastic hotels or resorts with outstanding pool areas, I do have my favorites around the state but I have to tell you, most of my favorites are in the Orlando area so I'll tempt you with a few of those as well. First up, is Cocoa Beach (well really it's on Cape Canaveral).  I love the Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort. It's right on the ocean and its pool area is so awesome with slides, a lazy river - just check out the photos. Now I have to tell you what you'd be missing if you ruled out Orlando in December. Liki Tiki Village in Kissimmee is way out west on Highway 192. You don't need to go to theme parks when you have a pool area like this one. I'm talking big slides, little slides, a kiddie area, wave pool, water volleyball, an erupting volcano...it is one of my boys' favorite escapes. The Nickelodeon Family Suites not only has amazing slides and pools but plenty of other onsite entertainment (even parents' night out). Then there's the Grande Lakes Resort in Orlando, part of JW Marriott and also Ritz Carlton (you'll have access to both pool areas). Five star everything including a lazy river, gorgeous pools and over 500 acres of exploring to be enjoyed via kayak, trails, and such. This place has the largest pool area in Central Florida. Ok, enough Orlando - how about Naples Grande Resort and Club? They have several different pool areas including one with a huge waterfall type slide and they're a Waldorf Astoria property. Nice. And there's the Pink Shell Resort in Fort Myers. A close escape from Miami, and this place is pretty darn amazing. Their tag line is, 'The only thing we overlook is the beach.' And that is really true. Take a peek at their pool photos and accommodation photos - you'll be sold. And they have a great kids program to keep them happy and busy. I'm trying to keep you south in December since living in Miami, I would bet that when the temperature drops below 70 farenheit, you're a little cold (at least I am and I live in Miami too)! So, stay south so you can enjoy the pool areas in December! Oh I just thought of one more, Disney's Vero Beach Resort. The resort offers fantastic accommodations with full kitchens and plenty of room to spread out, not to mention their pool area is great with a pirate ship pool plunder, and more. And, you can even make smores down on the beach and they do storytelling for the kids around the campfire. Have a great December vacation in Florida!

We Want A Disney Holiday AND a Beach Holiday, Can You Help?
Asked by Michelle on September 09, 2009
Q: Hello, we are a family of 4 looking for a Orlando (Disney) holiday for a week in combo with a beachy holiday for an additional week? Any suggestions? Are we best to stay outside in Kissimee and we like lots of activities in the area. Thanks :)
A:

Hello Michelle~

Information about combining a theme park holiday with a beach holiday is probably the most frequently asked question that I receive! And let me say, you definitely came to the right place for your answer. Staying close to the theme parks is a nice convenience and there is plenty to do around the area even without going to the parks every day. For instance, you can go ziplining through the tree tops or ride horses at Forever Florida; check out Gatorland and see spine-tingling reptile shows and alligator feedings; see an adventurous dinner show like Arabian Nights or Medieval Times - and that's the short list! As for beaches, you have several choices. Cocoa Beach is one hour away to the east. Daytona Beach is a little over an hour to the northeast; and the beaches of Florida's west coast are about 2 1/2 hours away - and well worth the drive. I love to recommend the beaches of Sanibel Island for families since the beaches are filled with seashells, the shores are gentle and the scenery is beyond gorgeous. Also, check into the area of Siesta Key, this beach wins awards from family magazines. Over in Cocoa Beach, there is a great pier where you can rent fishing equipment and such. You can also explore Kennedy Space Center and see the fantastic and fascinating space exhibits (including real rockets) and even meet astronauts; the Brevard Zoo and even the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Definitely plenty to do and see! If you come to Cocoa, be sure and check out Ron Jon Cape Caribe! Have a fabulous Florida vacation - I know you will!

Can You Recommend Parks/Playground In The Estero Area?
Asked by Nathan on September 06, 2009
Q: I will be staying in Estero with my son (age 2) and he loves big playgrounds. I have been looking online for playgrounds in that general area (Ft. Myers, Naples, etc...); however, I can't find any. Do you know of any good playgrounds in that area or do you know any parent sites that can lead me in the right direction? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!
A:

Hi there Nathan~

For playgrounds in this area, I know of a few. At Koreshan State Historic Site (which is a state park) you can pay per car and enjoy their playground that's adjacent to their picnic area. The park is in Estero, right off Corkscrew Road. There is also a park called Estero Community Park that has a nice playground that's even lighted in the evenings. For more ideas or parks closer to your area, check out the Lee County Parks and Recreation website. They have LOTS of information about each park in the area with photos and detailed info about each one. It's the best source for park info in this area, no doubt!

What Does It Cost To Ride An Airboat?
Asked by Kathy B on September 06, 2009
Q: Hi, Wanted to check out the typical costs for airboat tours. Thinking of Captain Fred's or maybe Boggy?
A:

Hello Kathy~

I guess you are talking about taking an airboat ride out of the Orlando area since that is where the two you mentioned are? With that in mind, the correct answer would be the following: At Boggy Creek Airboat Tours, you'll pay $24.95 for adults and $18.95 for children ages 3 to 10. Discount coupons are available at their website online. You can also do a private 45-minute tour and that's $49.95 per person. At Black Hammock Airboat Rides, rates are $23.95 or $19.95 for ten and younger. They do the private tours as well for $45 per person and they also do an hour-long tour for $39.95, kids are $34.95. I have not done Captain Fred's Airboat Tours out of Lake Wales and their website did not list any prices! You can also do Everglades tours way down south from Key Largo and also the Homestead area, namely Everglades Alligator Farm. Their prices include admission to the amazing alligator farm, reptile shows, and an airboat ride for $23.00 adults, and $15.50 for kids ages 4-11. So there you go! Have a wonderful RIDE!

Without Renting A Car, How Can We Get From The Ft. Lauderdale Airport To The Port Of Miami?
Asked by sue on September 05, 2009
Q: i'm flying into fort lauderdale and taking a cruise out of miami the next day, how should I get there without renting a car, there will be 3 of us
A:

Hi there Sue~

To get to the Port of Miami without renting a car from Fort Lauderdale's airport, you have a few different options. First, you can take a shuttle service. The Port of Miami Shuttle Service is reliable but costs about $36 per person. Be sure to make a reservation! South Florida Shuttles offers the same service but they charge $68 per person for passengers 1-4 and $14 pp if you have more than five people. One more that I'm familiar with is Easy Express. They have a shuttle that leaves every 30 minutes from the airport to the Port of Miami. Easy Express says they charge $10 pp but there are 'restrictions.' You can always hop in a taxi but that will cost you a whole lot more. Enjoy your cruise from the Port of Miami! I love cruising!

We Usually Vacation In Hawaii, Where Should We Go In Florida For Sun, Fun, Spa, Kid-Friendly Resorts?
Asked by Kristin Muelrath on September 02, 2009
Q: never been to Florida....always wanted to. We always go to maui for vacation since we live in CA, want to try something different. Looking for a nice beach resort, at least 4 star, nice beach, pools, spa, kid stuff like water slide, etc. What do you suggest. oh ya, we were thinking of coming in November or December, maybe January....thanks!
A:

Hi there Kristin~

So glad that you're considering Florida for your annual vacation! Since you are planning to come during winter, I want to give you some average temperatures around the state so you can decide what area may be more suited for your family. First, here are averages temps for the month of December around the state:

  • Daytona Beach: High 70°, Low 50°
  • Fort Myers: High 76°, Low 55°
  • Jacksonville: High 67°, Low 43°
  • Key West: High 77°, Low 67°
  • Miami: High 77°, Low 62°
  • Orlando: High 73°, Low 51°
  • Pensacola: High 63°, Low 45°
  • Panama City: High 64°, Low 40°
  • Tallahassee: High 66°, Low 40°
  • Tampa: High 72°, Low 52°
  • West Palm Beach: High 76°, Low 59°

Now, that being said, here are a few of my favorite resorts that will suit your list of requirements. First up, in Sunny Isles (just north of Miami), I love Aqualina Resort & Spa. It's right on the warm sand, has the most incredible 20,000 sq ft ESPA spa onsite, a great kids program, separate kids' pool, (no slides), and it's in a great location near everything. I also love Hawks Cay Resort in the lower Keys. It's at mile marker 60, which means it's 60 miles north of Key West. This resort has it all, including a dolphin encounter program right onsite. This might be a great choice as even in winter, temperatures in the Keys are nice and toasty (usually)! In the area of Cocoa Beach, check out the Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort. It's on the beach and their pool area is a winner. They have all kinds of onsite amenities you'll love too like mulitple bedrooms, full kitchens, mini golf, arcades, and there's lots to see in the area including the Kennedy Space Center and you're just one hour's drive from Walt Disney World, SeaWorld, Universal Studios, and the bright lights of Orlando. In the north, there are a few resorts that speak to families and luxury - big time in the Pensacola area. Check out Portofino Resort & Spa. Huge units are family friendly and their spa and pool area is great. Not to mention the beaches of Pensacola are just so beautiful. Oh wait, I also love the Emerald Grande in Destin! This is way up on Florida's Emerald Coast - named because of the emerald hues of the water up this way. GORGEOUS! And the white sand beaches of this area will have you coming back year after year. Who needs Hawaii when you've got powdery white sand for miles with no crowds, sea dunes, and great seafood and shops all around you? Destin West is a very cool resort as well. They are condo-style with a lazy river onsite and amenities galore. Check out their website for sure. If you want to try Florida's west coast but further south, The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort is simply spectacular. Spa, Tennis, Kids Programs, great beach, dining, five star luxury...you have lots of decisions to make! Hope this helps. Come to Florida! You'll love it here and so will your family. :)

Is Key West For Families?
Asked by Leighanne Haynes on September 02, 2009
Q: My daughter wants us to go to Key West next May (2010) to celebrate her high school graduation. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Marathon is a good island for families and that families should make Key West day trips instead of staying in Key West. We usually go to Navarre Beach. It is very quiet, beautiful beach, and very family oriented. Any advise would be appreciated.
A:

Hi there Leighanne~

I am so glad that you wrote to me! I can definitely ease your fears of visiting funky, quirky, Key West. I have to tell you, I live about 35 minutes from Key Largo so my boys and I go to the Keys every chance we get. And yes, we go all the way to Key West. And stay. And we have a great time. We even shot a video just last year about Key West With Families so you can see some places to explore for family fun. Now, for some mom-to-mom advice, Key West can be a little wild at night. We tend to have all our fun before the sun goes down and then do easy dinners close to the resort in the evenings. In the daytime, Key West is just like any other beachy town. Lots of t-shirt shops (there are one or two shops that you might want to turn little ones' heads in the other direction), but 98% are family friendly. There are many great resort options too. Hyatt Resort & Spa is a good one for famiies, as is Ocean Key Resort & Spa. if you like Bed & Breakfast places, try the Nassau House. It's family owned and operated and the owners' kids are part of the help there. If you want to stay a distance away from Duval Street and all the action, check out Parrot Key Resort. They have mulitple bedroom units, full kitchens, flat screen TVs, a private beach, jet ski rentals...it's everything you need in one spot.  Now, if you decide to go to Marathon, you'll love it there for sure. It is definitely family friendly and there are lots of neat things to discover, like the Turtle Hospital, the Dolphin Research Center, Sombrero Beach...check out this article on family friendly Marathon. For resorts here, Singh Resorts (that own the Parrot Key in Key West) have two resorts in Marathon. Each is spectacular. Since you are used to visiting Navarre Beach, don't expect the same miles of endless gorgeous beaches here in the Keys. There are beaches but they don't extend as far as the eye can see and they are not powdery, snow white like they are up there. My favorite Keys' beach is Sombrero in Marathon. The article will tell you all about it. Oh, one thing you have to do while in Key West (if you go) is a visit to the Blonde Giraffe Key Lime Pie Factory - or just one of their stores. Order up a frozen key lime pie, dipped in chocolate, on a stick. Heaven I tell you. Marathon is more quiet and laid back than Key West so if that suits your family, then definitely do a day trip to Key West at least. And, get out on the water as the coral reefs are AMAZING. Fury Watersports in Key West is our favorite. They supply everything you need for a day of snorkeling on the reef. I think you will all really enjoy that. Hope this helps! Thanks for writing in - I hope to see you down there next year!

Should I Get My Theme Park Tickets Ahead Of Time Or Not?
Asked by Toni on August 31, 2009
Q: Hi Jill, sorry i haven't read through all of what you have written, Did you visit any of the main parks if so, could you advise if it is worth getting the tickets before you leave for florida or best to get them over there?Thank you Toni
A:

Hi Toni~

There's a saying, "if you don't get your tickets before you get to the gate, you've already been taken on your first ride." I love to get my tickets ahead of time as it saves precious time once you arrive at the park. Plus, you can avoid the ticket lines and go straight for the fun. And, you CAN get discounted tickets if you purchase them ahead of time from various ticket brokers. I like mousesavers and Know Before You Go. They are reputable and saving even a few bucks always feels good!

What Are Some Great Family Beaches On The West Coast?
Asked by Sam on August 31, 2009
Q: Hi Jill. My wife and 1 year old son are travelling to Orlando in early December. We think he is a bit young for the major theme parks so we are looking for somewhere on the west coast with great beaches, things to see and do and good shopping. Look forwards to hearing from you. Rgds. Sam
A:

Hello Sam~

First, let me just say that I started taking my kids up to Orlando and their famous theme parks when they were LITTLE. They don't remember those earlier trips but I sure do! It's a bit of work but even a 1-year-old can enjoy the Magic Kingdom with all its wonderful characters and kiddie rides. And December is the ideal time to visit the theme parks! But if you want beaches on Florida's west coast, there are plenty of family friendly ones to choose from. I really love it here and you will too. First, I have to recommend the beaches farther south since you're coming in December. Try either Fort Myers Beach or Sanibel Island or Captiva Island. They are literally minutes apart (15 to 25 minutes) and in addition to great shelling, you can take your little one strolling as you shop at numerous boutiques like those at Periwinkle Place. They even have a playground at this shopping center. Hint, stop in the wine and cheese store for homemade key lime pie frozen on a stick and dipped in chocolate. Oh yeah, it's THAT good. For accommodations, check out Casa Ybel with its full kitchen units, mulitple bedrooms, and it's right on the sand. NICE. Sun Dial is another family winner. Here's a listing of accommodations over on Captiva for you, too. Now, if you want to venture further north toward Clearwater Beach, located on the west coast about 2 1/2 hours from Orlando, just be prepared as it may be cold there in December. But it is beautiful! Here's a link to the top shopping spots over this way, John's Pass with about 130 shops, restaurants, and a boardwalk, right on the water - and also Westfield Countryside. Westfield even has an ice skating rink! You can't go wrong with the beaches on the west coast, just choose whichever city fits your family. You will love your choice - and you may never want to leave!

Where Can We Stay In Tampa or St. Petersburg That's Central?
Asked by Helen on August 30, 2009
Q: Which communities in the Tampa-St. Pete area would be good places to stay with a 3-year old and a 5-month old and their parents and grandparents for a low-key vacation that doesn't involve lots of driving?
A:

Hi there Helen~

There is so much to see in the Tampa area and with St. Pete just 30 minutes up the road, you can definitely enjoy both. You have many options of places to stay from hotels to condo-style accommodations. To be centrally located near both cities, you may want to try Sailport Resort Waterfront Suites. They are situated on Tampa Bay and are Tampa's only all-suite waterfront resort. You should know that the Tampa attractions are pretty spread out so there is driving involved. I would definitely see the Florida Aquarium and Lowry Park Zoo - everyone will enjoy these attractions. The Florida Aquarium is Downtown Tampa at Channelside. To stay closer in town, away from beaches and near shopping and the downtown area, you can try Courtyard By Marriott. I also love love love the Emerald Greens Golf Resort & Country Club for its great location, pretty much near everything - in Tampa at least. And, you'll love their multiple bedroom units and full kitchens - great for traveling families. You can also just pick a resort on the beach in St. Petersburg and not worry about going anywhere. Check out the family friendly Tradewinds Island Resorts. This place is a little slice of heaven with five pools, tropical surroundings, beautiful rooms, kids programs, and it sits on 20 acres of glorious white sand on the Gulf of Mexico. It's low key and oh so lovely. Enjoy your vacation on Florida's west coast!

Is There Even To Keep Us Busy On Florida's SouthWest Coast?
Asked by Mark on August 26, 2009
Q: Hi Jill,Thank you so much for your response. Having further researched your suggestions we were thinking of flying in to Miami (we're in the UK) and staying for three or four days, and then driving over to Sarasota or Cape Coral for ten more days before returning and flying out of Miami. Apart form the beaches, do you think that there is enough to keep us amused in Sarasota or Cape Coral for ten days? Any suggestions on accommodation would also be great. Thanks again for your help.RegardsMark
A:

Hi Mark~

Thanks for writing back! Yes, there is plenty to do on the west coast of Florida between Sarasota, Tampa, St. Petersburg and one of my favorite beach destinations, Sanibel Island. It should take you 3 hours to drive from Miami to the west coast and the drive is pretty nice, especially if you take I-75 straight across. You'll drive right through the Everglades and you can see alligators and all kinds of birds right on the side of the road. Sometimes, even deer! For things to do in this area, besides glorious beaches that you'll want to lounge on all day, check out the attached link. There is Circus Sarasota, G Wiz Science Museum, The Mote Aquarium...and lots more! I like the TradeWinds Island Resorts on St. Petersburg and I also love Casa Ybel Resort on Sanibel for a more home-away-from-home atmosphere. You'll have a full kitchen, living, dining, separate bedrooms...check them out for sure. And there's lots to do on Sanibel, besides find the most amazing seashells right outside your door. There's the Bailey Matthews Shell Museum (perfect for kids), Ding Darling Nature Reserve where you can go on a four-mile wildlife drive, explore hands-on exhibits in the Visitors Center and more; Sanibel also has a nice library with a kids' area including a boat inside. There's also a super fun water park in the Cape Coral area called Sun Splash! Oh, one more resort that I love for families in this area (on Sanibel) is the Sun Dial Resort. Lots of room, great pool area, right on the beach and lots of extra amenities. Check them out along with the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort. They're a hair further north on Longboat Key but boy is it beautiful. Sorry to be so long winded! Have a wonderful time. Write back if you need more!

Where Can We Go To Enjoy A Beach Holiday And Attractions Too?
Asked by Mark Atkinson on August 24, 2009
Q: Hi Jill,My wife, 3 year old daughter and 1 year old son are planning a trip to Florida this November. We hear the weather is very pleasant and there are lots of things to do.We are however at a loss in terms of which area to stay in.We would like to spend some time on the beach whilst also having days out seeing some of the attractions.Could you recommend an area to stay in that would give us the freedom to combine a beach holiday with days out? Many thanks in advance
A:

Hi Mark~

I have so many ideas for you! Florida is a huge state so it is very hard to decide on one area. There is plenty to see and do in the Orlando area even if you avoid the main theme parks (which to be honest would be exhausting for your wife with two little ones and no help)! But there are smaller attractions like Green Meadows Petting Farm or Gatorland or even just playing in the fountains in the quaint town of Celebration or perhaps Lake Buena Vista in Downtown Disney. Cocoa Beach is only an hour away from Orlando on the east coast. The beaches of Sarasota/St.Petersburg are a little over 2 hours to the west. I love the west coast for families as the shores seem gentler, more sloped, and the waves are less. You might consider Miami as well. Attractions could include The Miami Seaquarium, Jungle Island and Miami Metro Zoo. The Mandarin Oriental Hotel has its own private beach and the amenities are many. Since I don't know exactly what dates in November you are coming, I've kept my suggestions to the south. Northern Florida can get cooler weather beginning in November so for warmth, I recommended Orlando and south. If you need more info, feel welcome to write back. I want to make sure you are comfortable and have all your questions answered!

Looking For Lodging On Or Near The Beach In Destin...
Asked by karen on August 24, 2009
Q: My family of 4 adults & 4 children ages 3 to 14 want to come to Destin or Ft. Walton on or aboutOct. 12-16. We are looking for lodging on the beach preferrably, if not real close to it. We would like any info that you can give us on reasonable rates for lodging & I think we can figure out the rest. We just need a good vacation! Thanks for you suggestions
A:

Hi there Karen~

First, let me tell you that you and your family will LOVE this area of Florida! There are several small towns along the Emerald Coast like Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Sandestin, Santa Rosa, Navarre, and Seaside to name a few. All are wonderful and will provide you the ideal vacation you seek. As far as where to stay, there are numerous choices from hotels to condos. Bigger is better in your case since you need space for eight. I personally love The Emerald Grande. Ask about their fall specials. They have full kitchens, onsite dining, a children's program, and lots of spectacular amenities.  Holiday Inn Destin On The Beach is a great affordable choice. They have a fantastic kids program too and they're right on the sand. To check into the possibility of condo-style accommodations (beside Emerald Grande) give Beacon Resorts a call. They can find you however many bedrooms you seek with full kitchens and such. I've attached the complete listing of recommended resorts in this area for you. This is a fantastic time to come visit, wish I were going to be there! Oh, the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is another great one. They are certain to have specials, be sure to ask for their best deal.

Need A Fun Florida Experience Near Kennedy Space Center, Any Ideas?
Asked by steve geiger on August 22, 2009
Q: my wife is driving with my 5 and 7 year old boys to watch the space shuttle launch and they are looking for things to do in North east fl sunday afternoon or monday morning, would love to hear ideas. THey would probably be interested in alligators or other FL types of experiences (not beaches)
A:

Hello Steve~

I have a great suggestion for you! Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. It's next to Kennedy Space Center and it's 140,000 acres of Florida beauty. Your boys will love spotting alligators, sea turtles, bald eages, spoonbills, manatees - and lots more. There is a nice Visitor's Center there that's a great place to start the day. Your wife and boys can watch short films, see different exhibits and learn all there is to do here. There is also a seven mile drive you can do in your own car that takes you right through the wilderness. Be sure to stop at the observation towers and manatee viewing platform. There is also canoeing, kayaking, and fishing (you'll need to get a permit at the Visitor Center to fish). I'm including a link with directions. You can also think about St. Augustine, it's about an hour away and there is plenty to explore here. There is the old fort Castillo de San Marcos, built in the late 1600s (I've attached a video link for you), you can take an Eco-Tour and spot dolphins and such, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, and spend a little time discovering the oldest continually occupied city in North America!

How Can I Get From Ft. Lauderdale Airport (FLL) to the Port of Miami?
Asked by tina on August 20, 2009
Q: Hi Jill, I need help fast. I have to travel from fort lauderdale airport to Port of miami. What is the most cost effective way to do this?
A:

Hi there Tina~

To get to the Port of Miami from Fort Lauderdale's airport, you have a few different options. (Be sure that you are leaving from the Port of Miami and not Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale!) Easy Express says they charge $10 pp but there are 'restrictions.' Be sure to call and ask about the details. Enjoy your cruise!

What Do The Disney Waterparks Cost?
Asked by lynda pomphrey on August 15, 2009
Q: we are visiting florida soon and would like tickets to the disney water parks. we have done disney theme parks before and with so much to do wish only to go to the water parks this time. we cant seem to find prices for water park only visits. can you tell me if it is possible to buy them and where is the cheapest place to purchase them. with thanks
A:

Hi there Lynda~

Walt Disney World boasts two fantastic waterparks: Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. You can purchase tickets at the waterparks themselves. The prices for each waterpark is $39 a day for ages 3-9, and ages ten and older are $45. These waterparks are a great way to beat the Florida heat and the ability to rent lockers and bring in a rolling cooler (no glass!) makes life a little easier. November 1st, Typhoon Lagoon will close for refurbishment but Blizzard Beach willl be open the entire time. You can also get discounted tickets at either mousesavers.com or undercovertourist.com - both will save you a few bucks.

Got Any Ideas For A Girls Getaway in Fort Myers Area?
Asked by Lori on August 15, 2009
Q: We are taking our annual "Girls Weekend" in Fort Myers..Sept 8-13. One of us is turning 50. We would like to see/do something special. Any ideas? Thank you.
A:

Hi there Lori~

I've got some suggestions for you for some all-girl fun! First, head over to Salty Sam's Marina on Fort Myers Beach and get on a SEGWAY. They will give you lessons then you head out on an hour-long tour. It's so fun! Celebrate your bravery with a great meal at their restaurant. For some silly fun, head out on their pirate ship and get tatooed by the pirates themselves while having a few refreshing drinks and spotting dolphins on their 90-minute cruise. You can also take a private charter by Soul Mate Charters and get out on the water. Head over to one of the out islands for a day of isolated fun and picnics on the beach. How about taking a pontoon boat out yourselves from the JN Ding Darling Nature Reserve on Sanibel? They are super easy to drive and you can see some great sights, catch some rays and bring your own food/drinks or stop at a waterfront restaurant. For the 'stupidest thing you've ever seen' (this is the tagline of this event) take a drive to Captiva Island and check out the NASCRAB races at Tween Waters Inn on Mondays and Thursdays. At 9 p.m., it's the adult show. It's fun, it's loud, there's good food and drinks and you can each name a crab and cheer it on during the 'races.' Have a blast! Happy 50th to your friend!

Any Ideas For A Last Minute Summer Vacation on the Emerald Coast?
Asked by Courtney on August 14, 2009
Q: My husband and I are trying to plan a Florida beach vacation for our family at the end of the summer, and are wondering if you could suggest some family-friendly locales for us. We have a 2 yr. old and a 4 month old (grandparents will be coming to babysit the 4 month old) but wanted to find a destination with other attractions for younger children, such as museums and the like. We are also planning to drive from New Orleans, so areas in the panhandle are preferred. Any ideas? Thanks!
A:

Hi Courtney~

Florida's Emerald Coast is ideal for a family getaway and just a few hours' drive for you coming from New Orleans. First, check out Destin and Henderson Beach State Park. You can also go to HarborWalk Village and stroll among shops and restaurants and see the charter boats. The Gulfarium is about five miles away and they have dolphin shows and sting ray feedings too. In Sandestin, the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort has everything you seek in one location. Great resort, beaches, shops, movies, strolling, playgrounds, ice cream shops, even ziplining (for you?)!  Pensacola offers up another great Boardwalk, nice beaches, Sam's Fun City,  Panama City Beach is great for families, offering very affordable getaways on the beach and there is plenty of fun to be had. Check out Coconut Creek Family Fun Park and don't miss Gulf World Marine Park with its marine shows and sea lions! You will love Florida's Emerald Coast. The beaches are just so nice and the people are so friendly. Enjoy your last minute summer vacation!

Are The Theme Parks Crazy Busy in Summer?
Asked by Matthew Smith on August 12, 2009
Q: My partner and I would like to come to Florida next year 28th June - 10th July 2010. We want to tackle the themeparks. Are we made with regards to visiting at this time of year? Are the USA holidays going to make the parks too busy?
A:

Hi Matthew~

I have some great information for you about attendance at Walt Disney World and the other theme parks like Universal, SeaWorld, in Orlando. The highest attendance times are Presidents' Week in February; Mid-March through April  (Spring Break!); Memorial Day Weekend; Mid-June through Labor Day; Thanksgiving Day and weekend; and the week after Christmas. So yes, the parks will be busy. The Fourth of July holiday over here will make it even busier during those days before and after, no doubt. The lowest attendance times are in January, up till Presidents' Day and the week after Labor Day up until Thanksgiving. So if you come during the time you specified, be prepared for lines and heat. It's still super fun to experience the parks, but if you can change your dates, you may enjoy it even more. Also, by staying onsite, you get special benefits like early entrance on certain days. You won't believe how much you can see in one hour when there are no crowds!

Can You Help Me Find A Beach House For 8 In Clearwater?

Hi there Barb~

I have a few suggestions for you in finding larger vacation rentals. First up, I like Home Away. You can look up the area you're interested in and see exactly what the price is and how many each unit sleeps. Nice and easy. Plumlee Gulf Beach Realty is another good one for this area. One more for you is Away To Mandalay Beach Houses, also in the Clearwater area. I'm sure you'll find lots with these three!

What Are Some Inexpensive Things To Do In Central Florida?
Asked by renee johnston on August 08, 2009
Q: we live in central florida and are looking for inexpensive daily weekend activities we can do? we are completely out of ideas.
A:

Hello Renee~

You are so blessed to be living in Central Florida as there are so many day trips you can do! The first idea that popped in my head is to take a ride down the Ichetucknee River on an inner tube! This is a blast and a great way to spend a warm afternoon as the water is a constant 72 degrees farenheit. My five year old even loved this. Ichetucknee Springs are a little over an hour north of Orlando and you can rent tubes for like $5 a piece then tube the full length ( like 3 1/2 hours) or a partial ride (2 hours). You can also be in Cocoa in one hour and go fishing off the pier, or visit the Kennedy Space Center for the day. In Saint Cloud, you can spend the day ziplining or riding horses or taking a coach tour at Forever Florida!. Ride through a 4,700-acre wildlife conservation area and see white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, Florida panthers and more. They have Florida resident specials going on so be sure and ask for them. Or, spend the day at Saint Cloud Lakefront Park; you can picnic, fish, find shade under their pavilions or get wet at their Splash Pad. It's super fun! The beach is always a great idea - and inexpensive too. Choose from Daytona Beach an hour to the north or Cocoa Beach, an hour to the east. One more place that's really fun for the kids and pretty easy on your wallet is Jungle Adventures in the town of Christmas. You see all kinds of wildlife, take a jungle swamp tour, and sooo much more. (It's between Orlando and the Kennedy Space Center.) Let me know if you need more ideas.

Can You Tell Me What Are The Extra Magic Hours At Disney?
Asked by Jay Hilbinger on August 02, 2009
Q: We'll be at Disney this week. Wednesday and Thursday, August 5 and 6. Can you tell me which days the Magic Kingdom is open early and late for those staying at Disney resorts? We don't want to miss those days. Thanks!
A:

Hi there Jay~

I can definitely tell you when you can take advantage of the Disney's Extra Hours - a great benefit to staying onsite at a Walt Disney World Resort. There are no extra hours on Wednesday this week so your Extra Magic Hour will be this Thursday from 8 am to 9 am, the park opens to the public at 9 am. You'd be surprised all the rides you can get on in one hour without lines. Not sure how old your kids are, but run to the MOUNTAIN rides: Splash Mountain, Thunder Mountain Railroad and Space Mountain. They tend to have LONG lines as the day goes on. Move fast, don't stop for food or drinks, you've got 60 minutes so make every second count! Here's the link Disney's Park Hours. Have a blast and eat one of those yummy, chocolate-dipped ice cream bars shaped like Mickey Mouse's ears for me! MMM.

Help! Are My Kids Too Young For Orlando Parks? Where's the Beach? What About The Weather?
Asked by Lisa on August 02, 2009
Q: Hi, my two little boys are 3 yrs and 18 months and we've been thinking about making a trip to Florida before the eldest starts school. We're thinking about spending a week in Orlando and then having a week on the beach but I've no idea where to start! I'd really appreciate some advice on great beach resorts for young families within say a 3hr drive of Orlando - also I've been told that our boys would be too young really to appreciate quite a lot of the Orlando parks, would you agree and if so which ones would you recommend? One final question, would we be better travelling in April or Oct/Nov weather wise? Thanks so much for your help!
A:

Hi there Lisa~

Glad that you have so many questions for me! And I'm super glad to help you out. First, by all means, take your kids to Disney's Magic Kingdom. Your three-year old will LOVE it and your 18-month old will smile, laugh, and sleep so good that night! I started taking my kids there when they were very young (of course they don't remember) but I do! And the photos are a family favorite! To see lots of characters at once, make a reservation at the Crystal Palace for the Character Breakfast. Super fun, delicious and air-conditioned. Now yes, it's HOT in August so you may want to rethink coming in the fall. That's what I would do unless you don't mind sweating through your clothes all day, and night. In the fall, you can enjoy Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party too! Although all of Disney's parks are awesome, I'd stick to the Magic Kingdom because of the ages of your children. If you come in August, to cool off throughout the day, take time to wander the shops, have lunch at one of the restaurants, eat ice cream in the shade, and take a load off your feet when you ride the Tomorrowland Transit Authority over by the Carousel of Progress (it used to be called the WEDway People Mover - Walt Disney's initials WED)! There's some trivia for you! Have a blast.

Where Can We Stay On Clearwater or in the St. Petersburg Area?
Asked by latissa on July 26, 2009
Q: having trouble finding lodging have a family of 6 2 adults & 4 childresn wanting to stay clearwater beach or st.pete area any suggestions
A:

Hi Latissa~

For lodging in Sarasota or Clearwater for six, I'd suggest a condominium style resort or perhaps just enjoying a couple hotel rooms but condo resorts offer so much more room, kitchen facilities, and separate bedrooms which you can appreciate traveling with four children. In Sarasota, I love the Lido Beach Resort. They have two pools, they're on the beach, they have onsite restaurants...very nice! Resort Quest can also find you vacation rentals within your budget. Give them a call and they'll find what you seek. In St. Petersburg, there are lots of accommodation options, too. Holiday Inn Sun Spree Resort has great deals and kids eat free every meal. They are not on the beach but they have excellent kids' programs, a marina, swimming...and it's super affordable. My favorite though would have to be Tradewinds Island Resorts. Check out their website and you'll see why! Tons for families to do including beach fun with a giant slide and fantastic, fantastic kids programs. You will love it. They have a deal right now where you get a $250 resort credit - be sure to ask how to get it. I think it's a three-night minimum.

Hi there Paul~

I have not personally used Homeaway, aka VacationRentals, so I did some research for you from this side of the pond and they check out just fine. They are a huge organization out of Austin, Texas, with offices in England, too. They are accredited with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) since 2006 and they started their business back in 2000. They have no complaints against them. This is all good news. Thanks for writing back, that's exactly what VISIT FLORIDA is here for.

How's The Weather In November in Central Florida?

Q: I live in England and have bought an accomadation package in Calypso Cay resort. I will come with my very grown up daughter. We thought November would be a good time to visit. What is the weather like in November?
A:

Hello there Jenny~

First, you are going to LOVE Calypso Cay in Orlando! My family and I stay there frequently as their location is excellent (close to restaurants, the parks, and Krispy Kreme doughnuts!) and we love their amenities like the swimming pools and mini golf - and their units with their Key West style tropical theme. Oh, and they have a computer right in the living room (my boys argue over who gets to use it)! Now, on to your weather question about November. Glorious! Your average high in Orlando for November is 78 degrees farenheit; average low is 57 (with a ''mean' temperature of 75. Definiitely fabulous. And, rainfall is much less too averaging only 2.3 inches during November (June and July average 7.3 inches). You will be very pleased with your November plans. It's an excellent time of year to VISIT FLORIDA!

I think you must be talking about Forever Florida in Saint Cloud, near Kissimmee. They don't have tree walking but they do have ziplining through the trees. Forever Florida is a 4700 acre wildlife conservation area and ziplining is only the beginning of all the fun you can have. You can ride horses through the creek and also take a 'coach' tour in an all-terrain big vehicle! It's super fun and all ages can have fun here. Let me know if you go!

Wyndham Ocean Walk in Daytona Beach is spectacular. They offer multiple bedroom units with full kitchens. You also said you were interested in the Cocoa Beach area, so I'm attaching list of accommodations in this area too. One more link I have to give you is for vacation rentals all over the state. Where Are The Family Beaches In Destin? And The Family Fun?
Asked by Melinda Smith on July 22, 2009
Q: Where is the best beach to go to in Destin for a family and what other familyfun things do you recommend?
A:

Hi there Melinda~

You are going to love Destin! There are lots of family-friendly beaches there and finding them will be super easy. Destin has been working on its gorgeous beaches, to keep them that way, by renovating several of its beach parks including Beasley Park, James Lee County Park, Marler Memorial Park and Wayside Park. Beasely Park has two big covered pavilions with picnic tables and there are restrooms and even a few shops open in season. For families, I love James Lee County Park - they have showers, restrooms, pavilions, clear shallow water - it's ideal (it's right off Old US98 near the Walton County line). There is also a beach right across from the Wal-Mart in Destin called Henderson Beach State Park. They have grills, boardwalks, showers (check out the attached video)! All these beaches are so beautiful! And, if you're staying at a beachfront resort, of course you'll have your own beach that you can enjoy as well. In addition, check out the Big Kahuna Waterpark with its refreshing water slides, the Emerald Coast Science Center is great for escaping the sun and heat and kids love it! And don't forget the Gulfarium with its marine shows and animals. For fun family food, check out Captain Kidd's Seafood Feast (they have a kids option too), and the Lucky Snapper at Harbor Walk Village has a claw game where you can grab a lobster! If you win, they cook it for you!

Seeking A Place You Mentioned On The Morning Show About Staycations?
Asked by cynthia Gray on July 21, 2009
Q: Hi Jill; I searched visitflorida.com with no success before I emailed you. I need help, I would like to visit the one that was featured with the five staycations in Florida within the last two weeks. I searched Gainesville and the surrounding areas but could not find the staycation you mentioned on the Morning Show. Can you please help me? Thanks
A:

Hi Cynthia~

This is so strange but to my knowledge, I wasn't on a morning show. And this is the second question I've received about it! If it was me, it might have been a segment I filmed for FOX Orlando on Staycations back in May. Maybe they re-aired it? I need more info on the place that you're looking for. Anything at all you can remember? A city? A partial name? All the things you can do there? Let me know.

Can We Rent Car Seats/Booster Seats In Florida?
Asked by Lee Harding on July 19, 2009
Q: Hi, We are travelling to Florida for the 1st time in Aug. We have 2 children ages 5 and 8 and have pre-booked booster seats but found out the cost of these is very excessive. Any advise on a better suggestion?
A:

Hello Lee~

I want to pass on the laws for child restraint requirements in vehicles here in Florida. This information is provided by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP): all children under 18 must be in a seat belt. Under three must be in an approved child restraint seat, and those 4 to 5 must be in a federally approved child restraint seat or in a seat belt. Although they are not required to be in a booster, it is recommended that children stay in a booster seat until adult belts fit correctly (usually when a child reaches about 4' 9" in height and is between 8 and 12 years of age). Now, that being said, you have options when it comes to renting these type of safety seats for your children when you visit Florida!  I don't know what area you are coming to but here are a few around the state. First, in the South Florida area, Family Rentals offers boosters for about $20 a week. In Orlando, Kids in Safety Seats offers them currently for $7.50 a day. For other areas, check out this new parents' guide to rentals. I know you're not new parents but it lists rental companies from all over Florida and they include boosters. You might want to even consider purchasing them once you arrive if you're going to be staying a while, then donating them when your vacation ends. You could even get a tax deductible receipt for them.

Where Can We Canoe In Gainesville?
Asked by Cynthia Gray on July 18, 2009
Q: I recently saw a staycation episode about in Gainesville. You can go canoeing and other activities. I will be in Gainesville next week and would love to take my grandson there, but I can't remember the name of it. Can you please give me the name. Thanks
A:

Hi Cynthia~

I know of a few places in the Gainesville area that you can enjoy canoeing with your grandson. First up is Ichetucknee Springs State Park. This river is a constant 72 degrees and offers the ability to tube, kayak or canoe your way down the river for several hours. It's gorgeous! The water is crystal clear too and along the shores you can see everything from wild turkey to deer. I just took my boys tubing down the Ichetucknee in May - we all loved it. Watch our video and see if this is what you seek. You can also canoe the Sante Fe River in nearby High Springs. They offer day trips, moonlit canoe adventures, and even camping. This is such a beautiful area, you and your grandson will enjoy it so much. Keep an eye out for wildlife - the deer are plentiful! Have a wonderful time!

How Can I Get Discounted Tickets To Orlando's Attractions?
Asked by karen on July 18, 2009
Q: are there any truly reliable ways to get a discount off disney or seaworld tickets? So far the only site I've seen with an actual discount is undercovertourist.com. I'm not interested in the time share discounts. Thanks
A:

Hi there Karen~

There are several ticket brokers that offer discounts (although not deep) on most of the attractions and even the dinner shows in the Orlando area. Try 'Know Before You Go' located right on International Drive in Orlando. They also offer dicounts on hotels and condo rentals. Another site that I trust is Mousesavers and the one that you mentioned, Undercover Tourist. If you are a Florida resident, your best bet is to show your Florida ID for big discounts on your tickets. Also, AAA (American Automobile Association) has deals. And remember, Walt Disney is offering free admission on your birthday, just pre-register online at their website. Now, that's a great savings.

Can You Help Us Decide Where To Vacation In Florida With Six Year Old Twins?
Asked by Kimberly on July 14, 2009
Q: My husband and I would like to take our 6 year old twins on a four or five day trip this summer. We live in Tampa and wouldn't mind driving up to 4-5 hours. We have been to the Keys and loved it, but are looking for something different. Nothing filled with tourists or too populated. We have looked at Amelia Island, but aren't sure there is enough to keep us busy. We are also looking at Sanibel, but again - do not want anything packed with t-shirt shops. Maybe even Longboat Key. Please help us decide!
A:

Hi Kimberly~

Thanks for writing. I have several different destinations to tell you about that I think would be great for your family. First, you mentioned Sanibel so let's start there. It's not your typical visitor destination so you won't find loads of cheesy t-shirt shops! You will find glorious beaches loaded to the gills with every shape and size of seashell. If you've never been, you won't believe your eyes. There are lots of resorts with spacious accommodations for families, and they also have kids programs that are awesome and provide loads of fun for them - and free time for you. I love Casa Ybel and also Sundial Resort - the first two to come to mind. There's a movie theater and fun places to eat (from Island Pizza to Biddles Bucket with a game room). The Sanibel Library is a great escape from the heat and has a nice kids area. The Bailey Matthews Shell Museum is pretty cool with hands-on fun and even a treasure hunt map where the kids have to find the shell and check it off, then get a prize. I take my boys to Sanibel each summer - there's lots to do! You can even go on a dolphin cruise, a shelling charter, a fishing charter (call SoulMate Charters!) - oh, and don't forget the Ding Darling Nature Reserve - and about 30 minutes away is the Sun Splash Waterpark.

My next suggestion would be St. Augustine. The beaches are beautiful (no shells like Sanibel though), and there is lots to see and do. Take a tour of the old Fort - Castillo de San Marcos, ride a trolley tour, visit Marineland for the day and see marine shows and swim with dolphins. The St. Augustine Alligator Farm is great for six-year-olds (take them to see the white alligator!), and Anastasia State Park is just lovely for outdoor fun and beach time.

I hope these suggestions help you decide. I don't think you can go wrong with either. So much to do - or do nothing at all but relax and enjoy the beach and each other.

What Else Is There Do See In Florida Besides Disney and Kennedy Space Center?
Asked by mark pearce on July 14, 2009
Q: hi,my family are going to the usa in oct 2010,there are 4 of us,my son will be 10yrs and my daughter will be 12,besides the space centre and disney world, what else is there to do for family's,we are coming over from australia...thx
A:

Hi, Mark~

Oh my goodness, what is there to do in Florida besides visiting the famous mouse and the famous space center? You've come to the right website and the right person to give you the answers you seek!

Since it appears you'll be visiting the Orlando area for starters, let me tell you a little bit about this mecca for family vacations. It's the number one visitor destination in the world! Why? First, Walt Disney World has four completely different theme parks here: The Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom. And, for a 10- and 12-year-old, they are all pretty spectacular! Staying onsite is a great choice for ease and extra perks like getting into the parks early, and in October, affordability. EPCOT has a wine and food festival going on during this time and Magic Kingdom has Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Be sure to check it out! Even a 12-year-old will like getting free candy while riding all the rides in one night.

Now, there's also Universal Studios and Universal's Islands of Adventure. The movies come to life here - check out the website and you'll see why! SeaWorld is an amazing way to spend a day with their fantastic marine shows including Shamu the killer whale. She's a Florida icon for sure! At Discovery Cove, you can swim with dolphins, pet rays, feed exotic birds, lounge on a beach...and it's all inclusive. Then, there are lots of smaller attractions like Gatorland and all the amazing dinner shows in town!

Kennedy Space Center is awesome over in Cape Canaveral, about an hour away from Orlando. And you can tour the oldest continually occupied city in the entire U.S. in St. Augustine with its forts, beaches, fountain of youth, old jails, and....lots more!

One really cool thing to do is take a tour of the Everglades on a airboat ride! Fishing is fantastic here in Florida so if you can, get out on the water! Most anywhere will do! I just took my kids up to Destin on the Emerald Coast (northern Florida on the west side) and we had a blast - check out our video! Destin is known as the world's luckiest fishing village and I bet it will prove lucky for all of you, too.

If you want to explore down in the Florida Keys, the laid-back atmosphere might just lure you to stay forever. Bring your flip flops and check out the fun, especially in Key West. My fingers ache from typing, Mark! For more ideas, search right here at VISIT FLORIDA. Choose a city and you can search the attractions in the area. Write if you need more! I feel like I just made a dent in the iceberg - there is just so much to see in our Sunshine State!

We Need A Large Condo On The Beach With A Waterpark! Where Should We Go?
Asked by Cindy on July 13, 2009
Q: which condo's with ocean view have kids waterparks with them and do they have any to accomidate 8 adults and 7 kids.
A:

Hey there, Cindy~

With 15 people, you will need more than one unit as even a three-bedroom usually has a limited number of guests it can accommodate. I was just talking about Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort in Cape Canaveral. It's on a nice stretch of sand and the waterpark is great. Their two-bedroom units sleep ten. On the Emerald Coast, Destin West Beach and Bay Resort has a super nice pool area, too. They have three-bedroom units (that sleep up to ten) and even penthouse units with private hot tubs and gardens. At Ginn Hammock Beach Resort along the Palm Coast (just north of Daytona Beach), you'll find what you seek. Their units range in size from 750 square feet to 3,000 so be sure to call and ask how many people their four-bedroom villa sleeps. They have several different pools, a lazy river, indoor pool, slides, and it's pure luxury! As far as resorts with lazy rivers, with a water view, these are my faves. And I am sure they will be yours, too! Have a wonderful family vacation.

Should We Buy Theme Park Tickets Before We Get To The Gate?
Asked by Jean-Frederic BAUER on July 13, 2009
Q: Hi, We are French and we arrive on 1st august. We know New York, Washington, San Francisco, LA, Las Vegas but never Miami and Orlando. Do you think we must buy ticket for Orlando Disney and Universal before left France or on place ? Thank you so much. Jean-Fred
A:

Hello, Jean Fred~

Many people like to purchase their tickets before they get to the gate to save time waiting in line and buying them onsite. You definitely can get deals purchasing them ahead of time from a variety of ticket brokers. I like mousesavers and there is one called Know Before You Go that is great and they have earned the First Place Award for Disney Products and Services. Undercover Tourist is another one. Just check around for the best prices. They carry tickets for the theme parks, dinner shows and local attractions. Don't forget your hats and sunscreen!

What's The Name Of The Place Where Kids Can Role-Play?
Asked by Connie on July 12, 2009
Q: When I lived in Florida, there was a place you could take kids and they could be doctors, nurses, firefighters, police officers for the day. Do you know the name and location of that place? I have forgotten it and when I visit my grandchildren, I want to take them there. Thanks,
A:

Hi there, Connie~

Wannado City might be the place you're thinking of. Kids can be most anything they want to be! It's America's first indoor role playing entertainment complex for kids - and it's amazing. The location I know is at the Sawgrass Mills Mall in Sunrise, Florida. It's a great way to get out of the afternoon heat and have some great fun.

What Are Some Favorite Family Beach Destinations?
Asked by Phyllis on July 11, 2009
Q: Family Vacation with 4 chidren from 6 to 12 Florida beach with water sports and other activities
A:

Hi there Phyllis~

This question is worthy of an entire book! I definitely have my favorite family beaches that I can tell you about. Let's start with Sanibel Island on Florida's West Coast. Stay at a resort right on the beach like Casa Ybel or Sun Dial and you can play tennis, basketball, swim, shell and lots more. These resorts offer great kids programs, too! Also, right down the road is Captiva Island and they offer ideal beach vacation also, and that's where you'll find Yolo Watersports with jet skis, yolo boards and more. Fort Myers is another winner. It's right next to Sanibel. The beaches of Sarasota are nothing short of family-friendly spectacular. This includes Clearwater and St. Pete Beach. I love TradeWinds Resorts over here for families. LOVE IT. On the east coast, Cocoa Beach, Daytona Beach and also St. Augustine Beach offer what you seek. Sun, sand and surf are big on the east coast as the waves are bigger. And they all have piers with restaurants and such. You can fish, too! If you stay at a resort like Ron Jon Cape Caribe on Cape Canaveral, your kids will give you hugs for life. In addition to being on the sand, the resort has slides, waterfalls, a lazy river, indoor games, you name it. I haven't even begun to write on this subject, Phyllis! Don't forget to check out Destin on the Emerald Coast! Once you choose an area, write me back and I can tell you just what to see and do - and even great places to eat with the family. Have fun deciding!

What Does Tampa Offer For Families With Toddlers?
Asked by Tina on July 09, 2009
Q: We're trying to plan a family vacation in the Tampa area in January. We have a little girl under 2 years old and would like some suggestions on where to stay as well as places to visit that are toddler friendly.
A:

Hi Tina~

There are so many great places in Tampa and the surrounding areas for families - the hard part will be deciding which attractions and such to see! There are lots of fantastic beaches along this coast, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and an award-winning family beach called Siesta Key. This beach was just recently named the number two beach in America - and here's why it's ideal for families: gentle slopes perfect for toddlers, sand as soft as baby powder, and lots of lifeguards and facilities. Another hard choice is deciding even which beach to stay on! For accommodations, there are so many different options, but for families, I love to stay in St. Pete (right up the road) in Tradewinds Island Resorts. Although your little one is too young to participate in their kids program, there is plenty at this resort to keep everyone happy. Saddlebrook Resort in Tampa is awesome - you have to see their 'super' pool! Check out the attached link! For fun things outside of your resort, there is the Lowry Park Zoo which is awesome (named number one zoo in the country by Parents magazine!) and also the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. For indoor fun, visit Rolly Pollies in Tampa - an indoor facility that encourages together playtime with caregivers and toddlers with gymnastic, art, music...it's too cute. In St. Pete, the Pier Aquarium. There's also one in Clearwater, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium - so wherever you choose, you'll be all set! And toddlers (at least mine) just love spending the day digging in the sand so hit the dollar store once you're in town for supplies that you can leave behind (some resorts offer beach toys too). Get a shovel and pail and watch the creativity begin! It can be cold in January, so be sure and check the weather for the week you're coming. Always bring hats no matter the season, the Florida sun shines year 'round. Have a blast!

We're Thinking Of The Emerald Coast In October, What Do You Think?
Asked by Laura on July 08, 2009
Q: Hi, Jill! My husband and I are thinking of taking our daughter to Florida in late October when she will almost be a year old. We're thinking either Destin or Panama City Beach. We would like a condo with a kitchen, pools, possibly a lazy river near lots of restaurants and activities. What are your suggestions? Also, what is the weather usually like at that time?
A:

Hello Laura~

You will love the area of Destin and Panama City, we call this area Florida's Emerald Coast as the water is just every hue of emerald. Jaw-dropping gorgeous! In Destin, there is a great family friendly resort with a lazy river like you seek called Destin West Beach and Bay Resort but you have lots of choices (just not with lazy rivers)! As far as the weather, the average temperature in this area is a high of 79 and a low of 60 in October (farenheit). Very comfortable for sure. Now, in November, it starts to drop, high of 70 and low of 51, so come early! There is also a great resort on the other coast called Hammock Beach Resort. They have everything you seek too - and you don't have to walk across the street to the beach. One more to tell you about - now, they don't have a lazy river but they do have a heated pool, zero entry which is great for the little one, and a kids' play area right by the pool - super nice accommodations, shops and restaurants right outside your door - it's the Emerald Grande in Destin. LOVE IT. You will too.

Where Should We Stop While Driving South Along The Coast From Atlanta?
Asked by Heather on July 08, 2009
Q: We have one day to spend along the coast before we drive to Orlando. We are driving from Atlanta. Where would you suggest? We would like to be within an hour or two from Orlando.
A:

Hello Heather~

I would highly recommend spending time along the coast in St. Augustine Beach (about two hours away from Orlando). You can also stop at Amelia Island for an upscale, lovely stopover and Amelia Island State Park which is right there as well. Fantastic beaches for families to enjoy and lots of things to see and do including Marineland, Castillo de San Marcos (the fort), and more. You'll love this area.

What Events Are Happening In Fort Lauderdale In August?
Asked by Donitra on July 06, 2009
Q: I recently moved here, and my family is coming to visit. 1 adult, 2 teens, and 3 kids. What attraction or activities will be going on in late August. I reside in Ft Lauderdale.
A:

Hi there Donitra~

This one took me a while as I was searching for something completely grand to tell you about. VISIT FLORIDA has a Calendar of Events listing of events and festivals around the state. There are a few listed in your vicinity (Hollywood) but none that I could find directly in Fort Lauderdale. Now, I know something has to be going on, as it always is, so I'm still searching! I love Miami Family Magazine, and they have a Fort Lauderdale edition which can be downloaded right online. Check out their table of contents for events so you don't have to go through thirty pages of stuff. They are super thorough about family friendly events. They don't have their new issue out yet listing things for next month! Agh! Now, Broward County park and recreation has a website that lists fun family events that happen at the waterparks and such. One more great place for you to check closer to the dates is miamifreeevents. They have Broward, too! If I see anything come up, I'll write you back.

We're Coming Over From Ireland And Want Resorts With Full Kitchen Facilities On The Beach - Help?!
Asked by Charlotte Daly on July 06, 2009
Q: Hello Jill,I am flying with my husband and almost 2 year old from Ireland to Florida late September this year. We are flying into Orlando (seems like the most convenient flight option). I have researched the website and read your views. The various options appear very tempting so as you can imagine it is so difficult to choose the right option. We are planning to stay for 12 nights in total, spending a few nights maybe in orlando and then travelling to a really nice resort with our own catering facilities with beautiful views of the occean. A resort similiar to Edge Water would appear ideal.I would appreciate your feedback.
A:

Hello Charlotte~

You are coming a long way and I'm really thrilled to provide you with the information you seek. Orlando is a great place to fly into, central to most everything. From here, you can explore like crazy! I also happen to love resorts that feature full kitchens - this is really a necessity when traveling with children. Edgewater Beach and Golf Resort in Panama City is a lovely option. It's a far drive from Orlando, over eight hours though. Now, you can be overlooking the Gulf of Mexico on the west coast in about 2 1/2 hours from Orlando by just driving west. I have several favorite family friendly resorts over that way that I love to recommend. The first one is Colony Beach and Tennis Resort on Longboat Key. It's super nice with amazing accommodations and right on the Gulf. That entire area of the Gulf Coast is simply gorgeous with its endless stretches of warm beaches. Focus on anywhere from Sanibel (Casa Ybel Resort) up to Clearwater Beach, Sarasota, St. Petersburg...it's all a wonderful choice. You have lots of accommodation choices, and you can do a search right here at VISIT FLORIDA. Now, on the Atlantic side, I sound like a broken record sometimes but I love Ron Jon Cape Caribe on Cape Canaveral. You can be there in an hour! Farther south down in Sunny Isles, which is right by Fort Lauderdale, there is a top resort called Acqualina Resort and Spa. They have several units with kitchen facilities - and they are beyond WOW. I'm talking gas stove, sub zero refrigerator, imported Italian marble, yes, I could live there - oh and they're right on the Atlantic with the most incredible views! I saw the biggest shooting star of my life off the balcony there over the Atlantic. I'll never forget it! The Florida Keys are just five hours south of Orlando and Key Largo is a sunny paradise for sure. Fisherman's Cove is a winner in my book for accommodations. They have a private beach, spacious home rentals, full kitchens, and more! Hope this helps a bit. Whether you decide to head up to Edgewater or any other beachfront locale, you will be pleased. Find plenty of recommendations right here at VISIT FLORIDA, and please write back if you need more!

What Will The Weather Be Like During Spring Break In Florida Next Year?
Asked by Becky on July 06, 2009
Q: We are planning a 2010 spring break vacation 4 adults and 5 children and we are all wondering if the weather would be nice...that you would know of from past expierance
A:

Hi there Becky~

Florida is consistently one of the top spring break destinations for a few reasons, mostly weather! It's gorgeous here at spring break time! Get on down here! Now, that being said - since you are traveling with five children, I would assume you would like to avoid those place that will be overrun with those fun-loving college students - so if it were my family, I would avoid Panama City and Panama City Beach as that's where they will be. South Beach is another hot spot so you might want to stay clear of that area as well. As far as weather, average temps around Florida (highs) in April are as follows: in Orlando, expect near 80 degrees farenheit; Daytona, 80; Fort Myers 85; Key West 82; Pensacola 76; West Palm Beach 82...you get the picture - balmy breezes, warm sand, sunny skies, lots of smiling faces.

We're Seeking Discount Disney Tickets And Airboat Rides! Help?
Asked by Vicki Hobbs on July 06, 2009
Q: Where can I get discounted disney tickets, downtown disney tickets, what is the best Air boat ride place around Orlando
A:

Hi there Vicki~

There are a few ticket brokers that can provide you discounted Disney tickets as well as tickets to other Orlando attractions and dinner shows. I like Know Before You Go and I also can recommend mousesavers and even Undercover Tourist. As far as airboat rides, I've got two that I like. The first one is Cypress Lake Airboat Rides. They have really knowledgeable guides and you are bound to see lots of animals like bald eagles and alligators on your one-hour tour. Boggy Creek Airboat Rides is pretty well known as well. Their tours are shorter (1/2 hour) but they do offer cool night tours that are great for pleasure-seeker adults and 45-minute private tours. Forever Florida offers really cool ziplining, horseback riding and nature tours too.

Where Can We Escape To In February For Warm Weather?
Asked by Trisha on July 06, 2009
Q: Hi Jill!We are interested in taking a vacation in Feb. to combat the winter blues here in Michigan! what part of florida would you recommend at this time of year for some warmer weather, we have two boys 4 and 2. Thanks so much!
A:

Hello there Trisha~

Definitely come make your winter escape to sunny Florida! February is winter time, even in parts of Florida, so for warm weather, head south. I'd say either Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or even the Keys. If you fly into Miami, you can drive about 75 minutes to Key Largo from the airport. If you stay in Miami, you can enjoy so many wonderful attractions like the Miami Metrozoo (one of the top zoos in the nation). the Miami Seaquarium, Jungle Island (a favorite!), the beaches (like Matheson Hammock or Bill Baggs State Park) plus tons of festivals and events. Many art shows happen in February and they are great for strolling around. The Coconut Grove Art Show for instance is amazing! Miami's average high temp in February is 76 farenheit but bring a jacket anyway as you never know when the mercury will drop below 60! So, get on down here this February. The weather's fine and you and your family will enjoy thawing out.

Where Can We Take Our Young Kids In Daytona For Fun?
Asked by amanda on July 03, 2009
Q: We are planning to go to datonia fl and a have 3, 8, and 9 year old children what would be some good thing to do in datona with them.
A:

Hi Amanda~

Besides the fantastic stretches of beach in Daytona Beach that kids and adults can't get enough of, my family loves the Daytona Lagoon. It's a waterpark and entertainment center that's right across the street from an area called Ocean Walk Village. Daytona Lagoon has rock climbing, water slides, mini golf, go carts, laser tag and even an old-fashioned carousel. Definitely something for every age group. At Ocean Walk Village, you can spend an afternoon or evening right alongside the beach and enjoy this multimillion dollar center with movies, restaurants, shops and an amphitheater, too. The movie theater is nice and clean and we like to eat at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. It's fun, noisy and perfect for families! A little south in Daytona Shores is Congo River Golf, a super fun mini golf course. One more place with old-fashioned fun is Joyland Amusement Center. I can't find their website to link you to, just a Google map with their location. You'll enjoy Daytona Beach. Bring the sunscreen and hats for everyone!

Can You Recommend A Family Friendly Beach In St. Augustine?
Asked by Heather on July 03, 2009
Q: We would like to visit the beach in St. Augustine area in August. We have young children and I see a lot of the beaches allow cars. Which beach would you recommend for children?
A:

Hi there Heather~

While visiting Saint Augustine, you've got to check out Anastasia Island, specifically Anastasia State Recreation Area. Cross the Bridge of Lions to get there. It's just north of St. Augustine Beach. There are nature trails, salt marshes, shells, and beautiful morning glory vines. The park is open every day from 8 am to sunset. Now, driving is permitted on certain beaches, like Crescent Beach, but not on Anastasia State Rec Area. The police do patrol the car-friendly beaches on ATVs to make sure everyone is safe and abiding by the rules. The beaches here are broad and car-friendly beaches and will cut your walk time greatly - a big plus with little ones. The cars have to stay 'in their lane" away from people though. Enjoy the beach!

What's The Weather Like In Orlando In Late Fall?
Asked by Pilar Aguilar on July 03, 2009
Q: Dear Jill, my family and me are travelling to Orlando (Disneyworld) at the end of October-beginning of November, would you please inform what is the weather like? will be rainning? Thank you
A:

Hi there Pilar~

Late fall is definitely one of my favorite times to visit Walt Disney World and the Orlando area. Late October temperatures (in farenheit) can range from the mid 80s in the day to mid 60s at night; in November, average high is 78, average low 57.  As far as rain, it's nothing like the downpours of most summer afternoons where average rainfall is nearly 8 inches. October is 2.8 inches, November is 1.8 inches. You'll be in good shape. Besides great weather, one of the reasons I love to go late fall is the decorations around the parks with pumpkins, scarecrows, and such - and also Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. This event will be taking place when you are in town at the Magic Kingdom (the final date is scheduled for November 1st.)  If you can, you should really make reservations to enjoy this event. The park will only be open to those with tickets to this event (in the evening) and there are no lines for the rides, plus extra special fireworks and a special parade - and your kids (and you!) can dress up in costumes and trick or treat around the Magic Kingdom. It's magical! We love that we can go on all the big rides (Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain Railroad, and even Splash Mountain) with no lines, no waiting. That alone is worth the ticket price. One more event that you can enjoy this time of year is EPCOT's annual Wine and Food Festival. Oh man - this is wonderful if you love food like I do! It begins late September and goes through early November. Have a great time in Orlando!

Q: What indoor activities does Merritt Island and the surrounding towns have to offer my 6 and 8 year old children? I plan on traveling during the rainy season and need things to do with them. They love Chuckie Cheese in NY, does Florida offer anything along those lines to kids under 12? Non- alcohol atmosphere, PLEASE!
A:

Hello Chris~

Florida is definitely blessed with plenty of Chuck E Cheese locations. Near Merritt Island, there are four. You'll have to drive 45 minutes to an hour to reach them though. There are plenty of other places that provide indoor fun, including the Kennedy Space Center. You can tour the facilities, meet astronauts, see IMAX movies, and more. There is also a Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory where you can explore outer space in the most amazing ways. For more involved entertainment, check out the Paradise Funplex on Merritt Island. This place is an indoor/outdoor skatepark and fun plex with games, mini golf, inline skating and all kinds of fun. Merritt Island also has a bowling alley called Shore Lanes with an indoor game room. If your kids love pizza, take them to Carrabba's! It's right on Merritt Island and my kids love their food. Don't forget you'll only be an hour from Orlando and they have tons of indoor fun including the wacky upside down Wonder Works with its hands on FUN (it's really awesome!) One more to try is the Cocoa Expo - they have soccer camps and games and such, indoors. There might be something happening while you're there. Have fun!

My Husband Is Returning From Iraq, We Need A Florida Vacation! Where To Go?
Asked by Angela on July 01, 2009
Q: We need help on where to stay want oceanfront hotel/resort with alot to do with the kids (9&12). We will go to the beach some but also want fun things to do. Dad is coming home from Iraq for 2wks in Aug. travel dates are 9-15. We need lots of help to plan a fun trip with dad. Thank You
A:

Hi there Angela~

First, may I say a huge THANK YOU to your husband for being a soldier. He deserves a great Florida vacation - and so does your family! I love the Tradewinds Island Resorts in St. Petersburg for loads of family fun. They are right on the beach and have fantastic kids programs, too. They also have everything you need right onsite from restaurants to parasailing, sunset cruises, jogging trails, huge beach slides, onsite spa - be sure to ask for military discounts. I also love Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort in Cocoa (well, really Cape Canaveral). This place is fantastic with its larger units with full kitchens, a lazy river, right on the beach, tiki bar pool area - it's really something. And, nearby is Cocoa Beach Pier, Kennedy Space Center, fishing, and more. In the Destin area, try the Destin West Resort. They do dive-in movies by the pool, have an amazing pool, across from the beach, check out their amenities for sure. The beaches up here are the prettiest you may ever see - white like flour. WOW. Dont forget to ask for military discounts everywhere you go. Welcome home and may your family enjoy every minute together.

We're Coming From Rome, With Two Kids, What Should We See & Do?
Asked by Stefano Mangialavori on July 01, 2009
Q: Next Year on June , I would like to spend a vacation of 15-2days in Florida with my wife and my two children that are 6 and 1 years old. Could you give my any advices for the travel?Greetings from Rome, Stefano.
A:

Hello Stefano~

You've given me a blank canvas on which to create the most wonderful vacation for you (since you didn't list any area specifically)! I'm going to suggest a few different destinations for you and your family. First of all, you can't come all the way from Rome and not spend a few days in Orlando. As the vacation capital of the world, it's a must-see. Since you are not coming till next year, your children will be 7 and 2, good ages for the Magic Kingdom. This is our favorite Disney park! Even the two year old can ride the numerous gentle rides and enjoy seeing the many characters. Make reservations to dine at the Crystal Palace for brunch. Many of the characters are in attendance, it's air conditioned, and you can get fantastic photos of the kids with Winnie, Piglet, TIgger...they will love it. In June, you should be able to get good prices on resort accommodations. If you can stay onsite, life is really easy. No parking woes, door to door service, special park privileges...love it. Now, you also have to experience many of Florida's top beaches. For families with young children, I tend to recommend the west coast. Along the way, stop at Dinosaur World - this place is one of my favorite places for families! You can even bring your own picnic or just wander the shady paths and check out the 150+ lifesize dinosaurs and eat lunch afterward! Ok, back to driving - drive 2 hours west to the Gulf of Mexico and visit Siesta Key or the beaches of Clearwater. These beaches are super family friendly because of the gradual slope of the shoreline and gentle waves. While here, take the family to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. In nearby Tampa, there is another fantastic aquarium, the Florida Aquarium. They also have an aquatic discovery zone that offers lots of water fun for the young ones (and in June, you'll need water fun)! there is a fantastic zoo, the Lowry Park Zoo, that is one of the best in the country. Miami also offers an abundance of wonderful family fun from Jungle Island to Metro Zoo and the Miami Seaquarium. I could write you a book Stefano! For more ideas, search right here at VISIT FLORIDA!

Asked by DAWN on June 30, 2009
Q: Hi There! For my daughters 14th birthday instead of having a party she chose to have a weekend getaway. She is bringing..... me of course, her sister, My beest friend and her daughter, and her BBF from school. The girls are all 11-14 yrs of age. We live in the Tampa area and wnat something reasonable in price and lots of fun for them to do. We wanted to find a cool place to stay that is not to expensive and will accomodate all of us. We would like to go one of the last weekends in July. =) Thanks for you help!
A:

Hi there Dawn~

This birthday weekend getaway for your daughter sounds like such a blast! I'm sitting here right now with my 14-year-old niece Samantha and I've asked her expert opinion as well as to what's cool and what are some of the places we've gone that she likes! Here's the verdict: first, try Sanibel Island, three hours to the south. You already know the beaches are fabulous and so is the shelling but did you know that Sanibel Arms West has 2/2 condos, gulf front, for only $99 a night! Yes, that's right! They have a pool onsite and they can arrange a dolphin cruise for you too. There's also a movie theater on the island and for great pizza, try Island Pizza. The Bubble Room is AWESOME for a meal (lunch or dinner) with tweens (or anyone for that matter)! Also, what about driving over toward Orlando and spending a few days at Liki Tiki Village? This place is fantastic and has everything onsite including an amazing waterpark with slides, an erupting volcano, poolside bar and grille, paddle boats, mini golf, and large units with kitchens. Plus there are lots of great restaurants right up the road. Have a blast!

What Can We Do With Four Kids In Fort Myers?
Asked by Michael T on June 30, 2009
Q: Hi - we are going to be in Ft. Myers for 6 days with our 4 kids (9,7,5 & 3). Any fun ideas for us to do as a family? Thanks for your help.
A:

Hi there Michael~

Fort Myers is my kind of town, you will love it! (Did you know it's nicknamed the CIty of Palms because the streets are lined with palm trees?) I'm going to tell you about several places in Fort Myers or nearby - first up is Sun Splash Waterpark. This place will please every one of your four kids - and you! Float down their lazy river in an inner tube, go down HUGE slides (and little ones too), eat lunch and explore its 14 acres of FUN. You'll find Sun Splash in Cape Coral (a little north). In Fort Myers, check out The Imaginarium Hands-On Museum and Aquarium. Another winner! They're open seven days a week and it's fantastic for hot summer days or rainy afternoons. They have touch tanks, fun shows, a 3-D movie and like 60+ hands-on fun things to explore for kids - all ages will love this place. The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium is great for getting up close with and learning about animals. For a fun day of picnicking or shelling or just looking for wildlife, check out Lovers Key State Park. And there is a zoo in nearby Naples, it's called Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens - well worth the short drive. I have to tell you, when we are in Fort Myers, we love to eat at Carrabba's Italian. Their kids menu is good (my 5-year-old loves the pizza) and they will even bring out balls of dough for the kids to shape - then they bake them for you! (Make a snake -it's easy and recognizable after baking!) For even more ideas, search right here at VISIT FLORIDA. Enjoy it!

What Can We Do In Punta Gorda? We Just Won A Trip There!
Asked by debbiraye on June 28, 2009
Q: MY HUSBAND & I WON A TRIP TO PUNTA GORDA AND WILL BE TAKING OUR 7 YR OLD SON ANY IDEAS OF THING TO DO THAT HE WOULD ENJOY? THANKS
A:

Hi there Debbi Raye~

First, congratulations on your big win! That is awesome! You will love Punta Gorda. You may have never heard of it but it's just a hair north of Fort Myers and about 100 miles to the south of Tampa. Water sports are what this place is known for. Its location on the Gulf makes fishing, kayaking, snorkeling, and all kinds of boating so easy - and most enjoyable. The downtown area is really neat too with its cobblestone streets and old-fashioned lights. It's very homey and welcoming here. Be sure to visit Fishermen's Village with its many shops and restaurants and numerous activities - I hope you love fresh Florida seafood because you'll get it here for sure. Mmm! Take a drive down to Fort Myers too. Here, you'll find PLENTY of things like swamp rides and more! You'll also be right by Longboat and Bradenton when you're there. Just be certain to enjoy those glorious beaches. One of my all time favorite restaurants is Moore's Crabhouse. It has fantastic views, great crabs and an affordable kids' menu (on Longboat Key). Have a blast!!

Tallahassee Or Bust!
Asked by Angela on June 27, 2009
Q: Thank you so much for the input. With so much detail related to indoors, outdoors and food choices makes this decision that much easier. Tallahassee or bust!
A:

I have no doubt you'll love Tallahassee, Angela. One more place to eat, in case I didn't mention it, is the Kool Beanz Cafe. Get in if you can! It's loud, great for all ages, and the food is GREAT. Tell Barb at Barb's Brittles hello and sample everything. Take photos! Send them in!

Where Can We Eat A Nice Christmas Meal In Orlando?
Asked by michelle on June 27, 2009
Q: Hi, as a family we are looking for a nice christmas meal when we visit orlando. There are 4 adults and a teenager. Any help would be grately received.
A:

Hello Michelle~

Planning ahead is always a good thing when it comes to families and vacations - especially around the holidays! Good for you! The first place that comes to mind is the Gaylord Palms Hotel in Orlando. In addition to several on-site restaurants that are famous for serving up traditional holiday feasts for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and such, they have their Ice Sculpture Exhibit that is beyond amazing. Make your reservations now once you decide on a restaurant as these places sell out. The Villa de Flora is a great option and most likely feature an all-day brunch kind of thing. Sit beneath the glorious atrium and just soak it all in! It's WOW and so is the food (no wonder it's won Best In Florida for three years in a row, and counting). At the Mystic Dune Resort & Golf Club in Celebration, they usually feature a traditional holiday buffet at their steakhouse called Kenzie's. You won't have any trouble finding brunches and buffets - this is a town built on visitors and they cater 365 days a year to us fine folks. Enjoy!

Where Can We Go To See The Changing Of The Leaves In Florida?
Asked by Angela on June 26, 2009
Q: Here's a doosie... South Florida Family of Six (56, 34, 28, 9, 7 & 3) looking for a change of scenery (no beaches) where there's a chance the leaves will change colors. Is October too early for that? Excessive amounts of walking are out, but everything else is a go. Any destinations/events/activities you can suggest?
A:

Hello Angela~

I have a wonderful suggestion for you - Tallahassee. October is generally when leaves change color so you should be in luck. And, even though it is Florida, they have the 'change of seasons.' (If you've never been to Springtime Tallahassee, put that one on your list as well!) Tallahassee is one of those great cities that can please everyone, regardless of age. Some of my favorite places to visit here are the Tallahassee Museum where you can enjoy 52 acres of amazing history and animals. There is some walking involved but not miles or anything. They have a raised boardwalk and you can see animals like a Florida panther, black bears, eagles, and more. They have educational areas for kids, a fantastic cafe to have lunch in, and an entire outdoor setup where you'll be transported back in time to an 1880s farmstead with historic structures and live animals. My kids love it. Also, check out Mission San Luis. Again, walking involved but it's under shady hickory trees and such. This was the actual site of where Appalachian Indians and Spaniards lived in harmony! They have period actors, historic structures, kids can get hands on with cracking nuts, making food, seeing the blacksmith, and more. LOVE IT!! Here is an article you can read for lots more suggestions of places to go including our favorite hot dog place, Lake Ella, more museums and the best homemade brittle ice cream you'll ever have at Barb's Brittles. Not to mention, you can tour the capital - but the three-year-old isn't going to like that one. Trust me, my five-year-old had issues there! You will love Tallahassee in the fall. No doubt.

We Need A Beach Location Within Walking Distance Of Everything. What Are Some Suggestions?
Asked by Mia on June 26, 2009
Q: We're trying to plan a beach vacation, we have 2 young kids (4 months and 2 yrs) so we want some place that is kid friendly but not too crazy for young kids. We would like a location that has a lot within walking distance so we don't have to worry about an infant and toddler car seat. We'll be flying from PA so we want something close to an airport. We basically need a good beach and a resort with a good pool, full kitchen (making bottles, etc. is easier with a kitchen), and the ability to rent high chairs, cribs, etc. Do you have any recommendations for areas and then also resorts?
A:

Hi there Mia~

There are several towns that come to mind for a beach vacation where most things are within walking distance, with resorts that offer kitchens, high chairs and other baby rental needs. I'll span the state and you can pick one that suits you best! First, in the north, I love Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. This 2400-acre resort has it all. They even have a shuttle to take you from point A to point B day and night. They have shops, restaurants, beaches, and all different sized units - in like eight different neighborhoods! You can fly into Pensacola, Tallahassee or Fort Walton. Also, Cocoa Beach has one of my favorite resorts, Ron Jon Cape Caribe. You won't have to leave the resort and this place has it all. Nearby are shops and such but really, you won't want to leave. Hollywood Beach is a winner for those who want to walk everywhere. They have a 2.5-mile 'broadwalk' (not boardwalk) where no cars can drive that's right along the beach. It's perfect for strolling and there are shops, restaurants, hotels and such all along the way. You can fly into Fort Lauderdale or Miami. Here's a full listing of accommodations but one  place to check into staying is the Hollywood Sands Resort. They are a condo-style resort that offers rentals with full kitchens and such right on the broadwalk. Also, the Ramada Hollywood Beach Resort. For baby rental needs, if your hotel or resort doesn't have what you need, here is your solution:Baby Borrow. They service most of South Florida and rent everything a baby could need. Another one is Family Rentals.

Looking For Something Different In Orlando Area. What To Do?
Asked by Shelley on June 24, 2009
Q: Travelling to FLA in July. Would like to do something a little different with the kids (12 and 8) this year. Can you recommend a good place where we can go fishing and do water sports? Staying in Orlando but for beach activities we usually head over to Longboat Key. Any suggestion?
A:

Hi there Shelley~

I have all kinds of great information for you! I just wrote an article for VISIT FLORIDA's emagazine all about the fun things to do in Kissimmee. It's called Kissimmee For Kids, and you won't believe all the different activities to be enjoyed. Did you know you can go ziplining through a pine forest? At Forever Florida you can! You can ride on horseback, too. St. Cloud Lakefront Park has a white-sand beach right alongside beautiful East Lake Tohopekaliga. You can picnic under the pavilions, walk the paths, or fish right from the shore. Shingle Creek Park's northern end is a quiet retreat with citrus trees and winding hiking trails. Bring your own kayak or canoe to Steffee Landing and explore 2 miles of Shingle Creek. For fishing over in the Longboat Key area, head to Lake Manatee State Park for great fishing from their docks. More fishing can be had at Myakka State Park in the Sarasota area. If you need to rent fishing gear or kayaks or skim boards, call Fun And More Rentals in Longboat. If you need a place to stay in Longboat, you'll love the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort. This place has it all and their kids program was rated one of the best in the entire U.S. You'll love it! And, if you'd like to teach your kids to sail - like a sailing vacation - check out the Offshore Sailing School. They have a location in St. Petersburg.

Where Can We Go/What Can We Do In The Panama City Area?
Asked by Tonya on June 24, 2009
Q: I have a 6 & 10 year old. We are trying to plan a weekend getaway with Grandparents also (50's) so we were looking for something ard Panama City or Fort Walton. That would be fun but also not to hot. Do you have any suggestions?
A:

Hello Tonya~

I have to tell you honestly, if you are planning a family getaway for this summer, no matter which area of Florida you chose, it will be hot in the summer. It's just part of our Florida charm! But there are definitely things to do to help ease the heat and keep everyone happy and a bit chilled. First, the area you're thinking of, Panama City & Fort Walton are so so so so gorgeous! You will love it. I say it time and again but the beaches are just WOW. White (I'm talking snow white) beaches, sand dunes, the friendliest people, laid back atmosphere...ahh, it is paradise. Have you ever heard of Perdido Key? It's the essence of tranquiity and peace, even with a six and ten year old! To keep cool, get in the water and try to avoid being outside in the direct sun in the heat of the afternoon. Use beach umbrellas. Enjoy indoor activities (like movies, bowling and shopping mid afternoon) or check out the waterparks like Adventure Island (which is technically in Alabama) or the Big Kahuna. The Gulfarium is fun, too. Love their marine shows. There's a naval air museum in Pensacola where you can check out flight simulators, an IMAX movie, and more. The Blue Angels do practices on Tuesdays where they buzz overhead in formation and such - another WOW moment. They normally have an air show in July - I'll see what I can find for you - it's JULY 11th!) For accommodations, Eden is a great place to stay - it's a condo resort on Perdido Key. I also love Emerald Grande in Destin and also a place called Destin West - they have an incredible lazy river pool area that is awesome. One more for you is Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort - voted a top family resort - again - by Travel Channel. They are on Panama City Beach. Bring hats, bring sunscreen, drink lots of fluids especially water and swimming pools are a welcome site in the summertime. ENJOY!

Can You Name Some Hands-On Fun In Palm Beach?
Asked by deb a on June 23, 2009
Q: heard of a hands on place in palm beach , maybe legos or like..for kids ..any info?
A:

Hi there Deb~

I have a few suggestions for you for hands-on fun for kids in the Palm Beach area. First, there is the South Florida Science Museum in West Palm Beach. They have a hands-on science center, an aquarium, a planetarium, you can learn to create clouds, ride a bike and make your own power. It's pretty neat. Their nature trails are fantastic out back, too. I don't know how old your kids are but for little ones, A Latte Fun is an indoor play cafe with trampolines, good eats, and play stations. And, it's not really hands-on fun but there is a super fun water park called the Calypso Bay Waterpark in Royal Palm Beach. It's got waterslides, splashing fun, swimming pools, and more. Have fun!

Hello there Clive~

Thanks so much writing in about Undercover Tourist for your Walt Disney World tickets. You'll be pleased to know that I would highly recommend them! They are reliable and are a Disney Parks USA Selected Ticket Seller (which is Disney's authorized program for ticket resales). I always recommend a site called mousesavers.com for 'all things Disney' and guess what? Mousesavers recommends Undercover Tourist too.  Their prices for tickets include tax (6.5%) and even free shipping to the U.S., U.K.,, Ireland, Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands. Rest assured, if you like their prices, go for it. You are smart to check into things like this. If I can help you with any other aspects of your Florida vacation, let me know.

Did I Make The Right Choice For A Hotel For 8 Teens On The Gulf?
Asked by roseann on June 20, 2009
Q: I planned a trip to the Sheraton Sand Key in Clearwater for myself and 8 teenage girls (15 and 16 years old). I am now having second thoughts because of the location of the Hotel. Do you think this place is too far from the action to make 8 teenage girls happy. Any suggestions on what to do with them.
A:

Hi there Roseann~

Staying at the Sheraton Sand Key on Clearwater Beach is a fantastic choice. There is plenty to keep eight teenage girls busy -- like 10 acres of private beach, volleyball (even night-spike volleyball!), swimming pools, shelling, Sand Key Park and Reserve is right next door, and they can have non-alcoholic frozen drinks poolside from their famous poolside cafe and Turtle Bar. They can even play tennis, visit the spa, go shopping, sail a boat, run down at midnight and eat Krispy Kreme doughnuts...don't worry, they won't be bored! Nearby, you can take them to explore John's Pass Village and Boardwalk in Madeira Beach. This is great for teens (or anyone who likes to walk and shop and eat! They have like 100 shops and restaurants and you can take a sightseeing boat tour or just eat ice cream while strolling down the boardwalk, day or night. It's a great place to people watch. From the resort, just hop on the Sun Coast Trolley -- an experience in itself! Here's another link that lists the events happening in the area -- see what's happening while you all are there. I believe the Museum of Fine Arts is having an Andy Warhol exhibit. Also, if you're looking for another option for fun, Tampa is just a half hour up the road. You could spend a day at Busch Gardens or Adventure Island (their waterpark). Don't doubt your choice -- you did good!

Hi there Rebecca~

The TradeWinds Island Resorts in St. Petersburg is what you're looking for. They have handicapped-friendly rooms with roll-in showers, they have golf carts to take you around the property and they also have a beach wheelchair for rent. This big-wheeled comfortable chair can go right on the sand for ultimate enjoyment. They have a great pool area as well and everything you need is right onsite so you don't have to travel back and forth for anything. You can also check into their kids program (KONK - kids only no kidding!). Sandy, their concierge, would love to help you out with whatever you need. They are connected but the lazy river is on one side and the beach on the other. They also offer fantastic kids programs right onsite with games and activities. Can You Tell Me About The 3-Day Park Tickets?
Asked by Devon on June 17, 2009
Q: If I buy a three day pass does this mean I can go to any of the venues over the three-day period? I want to take my two neices, ages 9 and 10.
A:

Hello Devon~

I think you are speaking of the 3-day pass at Walt Disney World. If so, you can go to one park each day with a base ticket. It does not allow you to 'park hop' on the same day, but you can add a park hopper option if you choose for an additional cost. Otherwise, you will have admission to one park each day. Hope that helps! Also, if you are a Florida Resident, be sure to get your special discount! Enter your zip code at their website and you can see the price differences.

What Are Those Condos in Destin With Dive-In Movies and Waterslides?
Asked by Becky on June 17, 2009
Q: Need to know the name of the condos on the beach near Destin that has a great water slide & outdoor movies...can anyone help with the name???
A:

Hello there Becky~

This is so funny but I just answered another question (right before yours) where the family was seeking the resort with the lazy river up in Destin! I believe it's the same one you are thinking of - It's the Destin West Beach & Bay Resort. They do offer the 'dive in movies' poolside and have a beautiful lazy river that's like 700' long. The Destin West Beach & Bay Resort is one of those resorts that just makes your family vacation extraordinary instead of just ordinary!

Would Destin Or The Keys Offer A Better Vacation Experience For Me & My 4-Year Old?
Asked by Charlotte on June 17, 2009
Q: I want to plan a trip with my 4 1/2 yr old daughter (just me & her) and I have heard alot about Destin. I have also always wanted to visit the Florida Keys. Which do you think would best accommodate us? I don't know which one is more "child friendly" do you have any suggestions? Thank you very much for your help!!
A:

Hello Charlotte~

Whether you choose Destin or the Florida Keys, you will be so happy with your decision. I am not leaning toward one or the other as both are fantastic for family vacations. Both offer excellent accommodation options and good entertainment options (Destin has the Gulfarium [in Ft. Walton] and the Keys has Theater of the Sea -for instance). The only big difference is if you are looking for stretches of beach to hang out and build castles, then Destin is your choice. The Keys offers a few beaches, but they are not of the caliber of the Emerald Coast. We love Sombrero Beach in Marathon - that would be our favorite in the Keys or perhaps Founders Park in Islamorada. Founder's Park has a splash area for little ones, an Olympic-size pool, a beach area, and it's centrally located mid Keys. I took my two boys (5 and 11) to Destin in May and we could not have been happier. We stayed at the Emerald Grande that offered a heated pool, onsite kids activities, restaurants, shops, and oh those views! But there are lots of other accommodation options too. The Big Kahuna Water Park is great fun and it's right up the road. In the Keys, we love to stay at either Hawks Cay in Duck Key (right by Marathon, about an hour north of Key West). It's another all-in-one kind of resort with a dolphin experience, pools, beach, restaurants...see? It's all good! You can also visit the Turtle Hospital and Dolphin Research Center in Marathon and the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory in Key West. You can't lose, no matter which you choose. Promise!

Where Should We Vacation Once We Fly Into Miami?
Asked by Roshani Herath Falin on June 17, 2009
Q: Hi Jill,We have a 17 month old and are landing in Miami Airport in August. We were originally planning on staying at Key Largo, but now are rethinking this-ugh! Any suggestions on which city within an hr drive from MIA would be good for a family vacation? Thanks,Roshani
A:

Hi Roshani~

Since you are flying into Miami, I'd be crazy to tell you not to stay right here (yes, I live here)! I love to refer the Doral Golf Resort & Spa for families as it has a fantastic pool area with waterfalls, a spa onsite for mom, golf for dad (or vice versa!), and its location puts you close to most everything like Miami Seaquarium, Jungle Island, Miami Metrozoo. But, your original plan of Key Largo is a great idea! It's very laid back, the water is fine, and the crowds are non-existent, especially in August. You'll love Theatre of the Sea with its dolphins and sea lions, the restaurants are all very casual and kids are welcome everywhere. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is excellent for swimming and beaching and snorkeling. You will love Key Largo - or Miami - let me know which one you decide on!

What's A Great Family Friendly Destination For Small Children In Florida?
Asked by keely on June 16, 2009

A:

Hi there Keely~

Wow, there are so many places to tell you about. I wish I knew more of what your likes and dislikes were. I am going to recommend my favorite beaches and my favorite resorts that will give you a great family vacation without stress. First up, there are many resorts that you can plop yourself at and have a great time without ever leaving. I'll start in the north at Panama City Beach. Check out the Boardwalk Beach Resort. It's right on the white sand, has a great children's pool area, and you won't have to leave! They have kitchen units, too, which I love for families. In the Orlando area, there are so many resorts to choose from that offer it all for families - I love Liki Tiki Village. Forget the theme parks, park here and stay to enjoy their enormous onsite waterpark with a children's area and poolside grill. In Cocoa (really Cape Canaveral) stay at Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort. On the beach, amazing activities and pool area for kids, indoor play areas - it's wonderful - you'll will love it. In Sanibel, check out Sundial Beach and Golf Resort with its five pools, miles of bike paths, kitchen units, glorious beachfront property! Down in Miami, visit the Doral Golf & Spa Resort, a Marriott property with its waterfalls, pools, great location (not on the water, but who cares when you have all this)! While in Miami, check out Miami Metrozoo or Jungle Island or the Miami Seaquarium. Also, I love Cool-de-sac Play Cafe in the Shops of Sunset Place in South Miami. I hope this gives you a few great places to start thinking about. Once you decide on an area, do a search of the area right here at VISIT FLORIDA, or write me back and I can give you more ideas!

Hi Barbara~

The only place to swim with the manatees is in Crystal River in Central Florida. Check out this video with our adventure expert, Lauren Tjaden! She'll show you how it's done! I haven't done it myself so I might see you there. Enjoy it!

We Need Pet-Friendly, Kid-Friendly, Grandparent-Friendly, And Beachfront!
Asked by Sonny on June 15, 2009
Q: Looking for family friendly beach resorts that offers something for everyone for my group of six (6) which ranges in age from my 10 year old son to my 78 year old mother. This resort would also have to allow dogs (2) that are less than 20 pounds each. Considering the entire gulf coast from Panama City to Marco Island and will require a 2-3 bedroom, 2 bath setup. Is there a resort that can make everyone happy?
A:

Hey there Sonny~

The answer is YES! There are plenty of resorts that can suit your list of requirements from mulitple bedrooms to being pet-friendly. And since you're open to the entire west coast, you will have even more choices! First, my favorite beach is Sanibel and the Signal Inn has units from 2/2 to 4/2 on the beach, pet friendly! And it's on Sanibel - one of the prettiest beaches you'll ever see - with the most seashells. The Tradewinds Islands Resort on St. Petersburg offers pet friendly accommodations now. This is new for them and they have areas of the beach where dogs can go, toys for the dogs, a pet-play zone, doggie drinking fountains - oh and there's LOTS for humans to do too! The beach is fantastic and their kids program is a winner. They also have five pools, a huge slide on the beach - I recommend this place for families all the time because they are wonderful!! Now, up the coast further, you'll find Sandcastles by the Sea, a condo in Santa Rosa Beach, near Destin. It's close to everything yet in a residential neighborhood. They're literally right across the street. Ok, just one more up in northern Florida, at Cape San Blas. Here's a site with pet-friendly accommodations and beautiful beaches that are ideal for your crew.

Are There Affordable Hotels Along Florida's Emerald Coast?
Asked by April on June 15, 2009
Q: I'll be visiting the Ft. Walton/Destin area at the end of July. I was looking for hotels on the beach also on a budget. I'll be traveling with a toddler so family activities near by would be perfect
A:

Hi there April~

You are going to absolutely love the Emerald Coast of Florida and Destin. You will find beaches as white as sugar (and as soft), water the color of emeralds, and blue skies as far as you can see. There are lots of affordable hotels, even on the beach. Try the Holiday Inn Destin On The Beach. Ask about their kid-suites. Their kids program is award-winning! It's called Little Buccaneers so be sure to inquire about it. Also, in that area is the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, a 2400 acre resort with everything you need under one roof from shops to restaurants to different neighborhoods of accommodations. Ask for their summer special rates. For more ideas for hotels and resorts, I'm attaching a list. One more that's super affordable is the Hampton Inn in Fort Walton Beach. Their rooms has refrigerators and you get free breakfast which really saves families a big chunk of money. Have a wonderful beach vacation!

What Fun Can We Have In The West Palm Beach Area?
Asked by Kristen Harty on June 15, 2009
Q: Hello,We will be visiting the Port St. Lucie are in July with two children ages 19 month and 4 years old. We will fly into West Palm beach. Can you recommend child friendly activities in the area and maybe an inexpensive beach resort for two nights. Thanks for your help,Kristen Harty
A:

Hi Kristen~

As far as accommodation options in the nearby area on the beach, try the Courtyard by Marriott Jensen Beach - they have rates from $99 and Florida resident packages from $109. Now, for a good, inexpensive time with two little ones, take a trip to Hobe Sound and visit Jonathan Dickinson State Park. They have a playground, you can picnic, rent boats, see exhibits and walk nature trails. There are many other state parks in the area as well. I'm attaching a list so you can see them for yourself. In West Palm Beach, you can do a drive-thru savannah at Lion Country Safari. If you've never done it, it's really awesome for the kids. After the car ride through the savannah, you can enjoy a petting zoo, a boat ride on a pontoon, mini golf, and loads more. Check out the link and read more about it for sure. But it's great! There's also a zoo in this area, the Palm Beach Zoo. Take the kids on a carousel ride while you're there. Next up, there's the South Florida Science Museum - even your little ones (who are young) will like the hands-on activities and it's indoor fun. Calypso Bay is a waterpark that has a nice kids area and big waterslides for big kids(or adults). There's another one too called Coconut Cove - here's a website that lists them both! Now, I've saved the best for last but I love A Latte Fun - it's an entirely indoor play area for tots that is so fantastic. Everyone will have a wonderful afternoon here, and it's great to get out of the heat - and they have healthy food (but it's good)! Hope this helps - it's a very family friendly area.

What Are Some Family Friendly Resorts In Miami And Nearby?
Asked by Zulema on June 14, 2009
Q: We'll be visiting Miami soon and would like to stay at the beach in a family hotel with many water features and activities to keep the kids busy. Have any ideas in the Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or nearby locations? Thanks.
A:

Hi Zulema~

I have lots of family friendly resorts to tell you about in the Miami and surrounding areas. First, Trump International Sonesta on Sunny Isles (a little north of Miami Beach) is fantastic for families with its beachfront location, an oasis type pool, great kids program (that even takes the kids to local attractions like Jungle Island and such!) and they have lots of watersports. Next, is NOT on the beach but who cares when you have a super fun waterpark multi pool play area right onsite? It's the Doral Golf Resort & Spa - it's a Marriott property and the pool area is just what you're looking for with slides (including the 125' Blue Monster slide), waterfalls, pools, kiddie pool and kid club activities, a sandy zero-entry pool and lots more. One hour south in upper Key Largo is the Key Largo Grande - a Hyatt property with a private beach, pool with waterfalls, lots of water activities from jet skis to kayaks, and it's the Keys so you know its laid back and wonderful. In Fort Lauderdale, the Courtyard by Marriott is a nice choice. The beach is right there and so is shopping, restaurants, and the heart of everything Fort Lauderdale. Those are my favorites! (Especially Doral Resort & Spa - and you won't even miss not being on the beach, really!)

What's A Great Beach Holiday Destination With Good Restaurants And No Theme Parks?
Asked by colin on June 13, 2009
Q: as a family we have done shops some parks, how ever iwould like to do a beach holidaywith out the shops for the wife .we like eating out our sondoes not like theme parks so i would be thankfull for help .
A:

Hello Colin~

One of my favorite family beach escapes is to the west coast of Florida to the islands of Sanibel and Captiva. There are no theme parks, no crowds, excellent restaurants, and miles of beaches to meander. You can literally walk for miles while stooping over looking at and collecting the incredible seashells. The islands of Sanibel and Captiva are barrier islands that, due to their geography, capture seashells like a big shovel from the Gulf of Mexico by the thousands. It's one of the top shelling destinations in the world. This makes walking the beach an event not just a mere stroll since you never know what gem you might find - and you WILL find them. As far as restaurants, since you said you love to eat out, you have so many options here and many offer Gulf views that are spectacular, especially at sunset. Try the Mucky Duck on Captiva for sure. The Bubble Room is always crowded for such small islands but worth the wait - and they have the best homemade chicken fingers on their kids menu you may ever have. Save room for dessert as they are huge and yummy. The Thistle Lodge on Sanibel is fantastic (I love to stay at the Casa Ybel Resort on Sanibel as the Thistle Lodge is their onsite restaurant). Also, try the Jacaranda, the Lazy Flamingo for a casual meal and the kids meals come on frisbees - their grouper sandwich is great. Mata Luna and Island Pizza are my favorite Italian spots. And, if your wife does want to shop, there are plenty to choose from. Another kid-friendly restaurant is Biddles Bucket. Each child gets to choose a galvanized bucket filled with toys before seated. Keeps them busy so parents can chat.  They also have a game room. (In case you couldn't tell, I like to eat out too!)

For A December Florida Vacation, Where's The Warm Temperatures?
Asked by joanne on June 12, 2009
Q: Hi, we are spending one week in orlando at Xmas then a second week 'further south to relax and enjoy warmer weather' Is St Petersburg suitable for me and my three kids 2,10 and 12 years or should I look at Miami, florida Keys, west Palm Beach to get a better climate? I am unsure of the distances and whether the temperatures range that much...? Please help!
A:

Hello Joanne~

In December, I would drive south, the further south the better to find warm temperatures for sure. Although I cannot predict the weather, average temperatures vary greatly between mid-state like Tampa/St. Petersburg and Miami and the Florida Keys. (In Tampa, average temperature ranges for December are 72 for a high and 52 for a low. In Key West, the highs are 77 and the lows 67)!  You can't go wrong in exploring south Florida and there is plenty to keep your family of three kids entertained and warm. Now, from Orlando, it's about 4 hours (maybe a little less) to Miami. Key Largo is an hour south of Miami and Key West is three hours from Miami. Along the way there is plenty to see and do, in both Miami and all along the Keys. Miami is famous for Metrozoo one of the top zoos in the nation, Jungle Island and the Miami Seaquarium. In Key Largo, hit the beach at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. In Islamorada, visit Theater of the Sea for their marine shows and dolphin kisses, and in Key West, there's plenty to do! Marathon is the middle of the keys and known for family fun, too. It's a great place to stay since it's half way between Key Largo and Key West. Drive south! You will love it! There's nothing better than relaxing beneath a swaying palm in the dead of winter - send postcards! Send text messages! You will be the envy of everyone in the U.K.!

What Should We See In Florida With Three Very Young Kids?
Asked by eva simonis on June 11, 2009
Q: We have 18 days between arriving in Miami and flying back from Atlanta to the Netherlands. Could you please advice me what to visit knowing that we are travelling with 3 kids (4, 2 and 12 weeks old) and could you advice me where to stay for a few days (3 places in total). Thank you in advance Jill
A:

Hello Eva~

In Miami (my hometown), I like to recommend the Doral Golf Resort & Spa. It's a Marriott property and its location puts you in the center of most everything. Since your kids are very young and I assume you are coming in the summertime, and it's hot, I would plan activities in the morning hours and indoor activities during the heat of the day. In Miami, some of the most attractions for children are Jungle Island (their petting zoo is great for the little ones) and they have a really neat area for 'lorikeet feedings' that is not to be missed. You can feed these beautiful colored little birds with cups of nectar - they will fly right on you and drink from the tiny cup you are given by the staff. It's quite magical. Miami MetroZoo is awesome, too. This zoo is huge and one of the best in the nation. They have air-conditioned monorails (nice for cooling off from the heat), air conditioned lunch pavilions, water splash play areas and cageless animals of all kinds. The paths are perfect for strolling. For indoor fun, try either Cool-de-sac play cafe in South Miami with its seven different play areas ideal for little ones and a special toddler area or spend an afternoon in the Miami Children's Museum (very close to Jungle Island). I would also spend some time on the west coast enjoying the beaches and relaxing. Try Sanibel and Captiva Islands or up a little further north to the beaches of Sarasota or Siesta Key. As children under six months are too young for sunscreen, keep the baby indoors. I like the Tradewinds Resort on St. Petersburg for families but there are lots of great places to stay along the west coast. The beaches along the Emerald Coast of Florida are so gorgeous, since you have so many days to spend, think about heading up to Florida's northernmost beaches like Destin, Pensacola, Sandestin, and the beautiful Perdido Key. Check out Eden for accommodations. Jacksonville has neat things too - before I write a book - I'll make this short and sweet - Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is fantastic! And, you should visit the Jacksonville Children's Museum for hands-on fun for everyone. Whew!

Rest & Relaxation, With A Five-Year-Old, Is This Possible?
Asked by Cara Newham on June 10, 2009
Q: We are planning a 5-7 day family vacation to Florida in July, but need some advice as to where to go and stay. I prefer the gulf coast and have thought about Tampa and Captiva/Sanibel Island. My husband and I want time to relax and enjoy beautiful beaches as well as historical places to visit. We also need places to go to keep our 5 year old entertained (she loves animals and water). We prefer a nice, well kept resort that has plenty of family activities. I know you will have great ides for us. Thank you.
A:

Hey there Cara~

If you and your husband seek rest and relaxation, well, look no further than Sanibel Island. This gorgeous island getaway redefines relaxation! And there are some really nice resorts right on the beach with kids programs and lots of amenities to keep everyone happy. One of my favorites is Casa Ybel. The units are nice and big with full kitchens, and you're right on the beach. They have a kiddie pool, Olympic sized pool, onsite restaurant, poolside bar with food service, and lots of seashells. The resort can put up cabanas on the beach for you, too. Sundial Beach & Gulf Resort is another winner. They have five pools, children's programs, large units and so much more I could write a book on this place! There is a nice library on the island perfect to take your little one for story hours or just to play in their boat in the middle of the kids section. Visit J.N. Ding Darling Reserve for birds and animal spotting, and you can drive it! You can also rent bikes and ride on wide sidewalks all over the island and visit the Shell Museum! In nearby Naples, you can spend the day at the Naples Zoo and Caribbean Gardens or take an airboat ride or Everglades Eco Tour.  For even more ideas, do a search right here by city name and then click on attractions or sightseeing. There is just so much information! Head west, Cara! Head west!

How About A Fun Destination Near Vero For Teens?
Asked by Anne on June 10, 2009
Q: Our Family of 4 (two kids, 17 and 15) will be heading to Vero Beach to visit their grandfather in mid July. We are looking to spend a few days elsewhere that might be interesting and fun but are concerned about the heat. Any ideas? We have been to Disney world several times already but would be interested in active water sport ideas...
A:

Hi there Anne~

Mid July is warm no doubt (highs can be in the 90s) but there are great ways to have fun in the sun for everyone. Since you're looking to explore I've got several suggestions and they all involve water! First, the area of Tampa and the gulf coast is wonderful. You'll have already seen the east coast when you visit grandpa in Vero so head across the state (about 125 miles) to Tampa and spend the day at Adventure Island. This is Busch Gardens Tampa Bay waterpark and man oh man is it FUN. It's 30 acres big and has everything you'd imagine in a top-notch waterpark. There's corkscrew slides, waterfalls, poolside cabanas, and lots more. Also, I know you've done Disney but have you done their waterparks? There's Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon and both offer turns, drops, slides, and oodles of good times. Typhoon Lagoon has a shark reef and Blizzard Beach is famous for Summit Plummit - one of the fastest, tallest waterslides in the world! Also, if you head over to the Tampa area, you should check out the snorkeling at Siesta Key. It's one of the best places to snorkel in the state and this beach was just rated #6 by the Travel Channel for Best Family Beaches. In nearby Cocoa Beach, take your kids to the Cocoa Beach Surf School. It's not easy but it's fantastic fun. I've attached a video by our adventure expert, Lauren Tjaden. If you head up to Cocoa, check out the Kennedy Space Center. Hope this gives you some good ideas to beat the heat!

What To Do With Two Boys On The Gulf Coast - And Where's The MLB Teams?
Asked by Stephanie on June 09, 2009
Q: My boys and I are wanting to vacation in FL this July. My boys are 8 and 10. I would really like to go somewhere on the gulf side of the state. My boys are active, love the outdoors, sports and adventure. Also, where are the Florida Pro Baseball teams located? Thanks so much!
A:

Hi Stephanie~

Ok, first, Florida major league baseball teams can be found in Miami (the Marlins) and in Tampa (the Rays). Since you prefer to visit the west coast, The Tampa Rays sound like a good bet. While in this area, you should take them to Busch Gardens or Adventure Island, their waterpark that's right across the street. It's so perfect for active boys and the month of July! My ten year old loves it here - thinks it's the most fun you can have in Tampa in the summer. There is also the Pier Aquarium in St. Petersburg and The Pier. Here, they can fish off the pier (everything you need is right here) and there's shops, restaurants, boats - The Pier has it all. Oh, and Dinosaur World in Plant City (like 30 minutes away) is a surprisingly wonderful attraction with 150 life-sized dinosaurs. We love this place. It's super affordable, the shady paths cool off the day and you can even bring in your own food and drinks and have a picnic. One more place - Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo. Be sure to take the boys to feed the giraffes and the lorikeets -and have your camera at the ready! The lorikeets are the prettiest little birds and they'll give you cups of nectar to feed them - they will fly and walk all over you! Love it.

What About Disney Theme Parks And Ticket Deals?
Asked by Sheka on June 09, 2009
Q: Hi, I am looking to come to Orlando Studio's, can you help me on the things to do for 4 Kids ranging from ages 8-10. I have not a clue and there is so much on line. I want to know what to visit or would be a good idea for the kids as well as the adults, and what are good price packages. Thanks
A:

Hi there Sheka~

I think you are referring to Hollywood Studios? One of Walt Disney World's theme parks? It used to be called MGM Studios but they changed the name some time ago. If you go to Hollywood Studios, be sure to see the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular and the fireworks are my favorite here - of all the Disney parks! Don't miss them - they are in the amphitheatre area so you can sit and watch the entire show. There's a fun place to eat in there called Prime Time Cafe where the waitresses will yell at you (or the kids) to eat their veggies and to wash hands after going to the bathroom. And the food is fantastic. It's a lot of fun! The Star Wars stuff there is great as well as Toy Story Mania. We love this park! As far as good ticket deals, there is no magic trick, you have to shop around but I'd get them before you get to the gate. Try mousesavers.com and also Know Before You Go. And, I have to tell you, the Magic Kingdom is awesome for kids that age. They can ride the three mountains - Space, Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Splash Mountain! This is my favorite park of all time and I never tire of it. Do your homework and read about each park to see what interests you the most. Walt Disney just recently relaunched their website and it's super easy to use and search now. And, you can also do easy searches right here at VISIT FLORIDA for more info as well. I hope this steers you in the right direction!

What To Do In The Keys With Three Teenage Boys?
Asked by amy on June 09, 2009
Q: Would like to take my 3 very active teenage boys to the keys. I hear pros and cons about things to do in the keys for kids. I was thinking maybe a day of deep sea fishing or snorkeling. Do you recommend this? We live in West Palm Beach, and would like to do an inexpensive vacation that we can drive to. Thanks
A:

Hello Amy~

By all means, bring your three teenage boys to the Keys! They will love it, you will love it. There are lots of great places to stay but as you may know, I prefer lots of room for traveling families - it gives everyone their much needed space which makes for a much happier getaway. I love to recommend staying half way between Key Largo and Key West, which would be Marathon, the family fun destination of the Keys! Check out Coco Plum Beach and Tennis Club or Tranquility Bay or in Duck Key, check out Hawk's Cay. Now, as far as what to do, either a half day fishing or full day would be awesome. There are several marinas that you can check into: Holiday Isle, Whale Harbor, Bud & Mary's Marina, Charter boats are a blast. One of our favorites down there is at Whale Harbor Marina, the boat is Blue Chip Too and the captain is Skip Bradeen. There is also a 'head boat' out of Whale Harbor (or is Bud & Mary's?) which is less money but you'd be on a boat with lots of other people and they take you out to the reef where you catch fish over the side of the boat, side by side with everyone else. It's called the Miss Tradewinds. Out of Key Largo, you can take a snorkel trip from John Pennekamp State Park. It's fantastic. (Bring some slices up oranges or some tangerines in your bag because when you finish snorkeling, the sweet, juicy oranges will not only taste refreshing, they will get the snorkel taste out of your mouth). In Islamorada is where you'll find Holiday Isle - it's not only a marina, it's a hotel/motel, tiki bar with swimming pool, shops and restaurants. Teenagers like this place as it's where to see and be seen.  They can also ride a giant banana, go fishing, snorkeling, parasail...and more. If they go fishing and they catch fish, take the fillets to Hog Heaven for hook and cook (in Islamorada). If they want to swim with dolphins, you can do that at the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon or at Hawk's Cay. Oh, and take them to feed the tarpon at Robbie's in Islamorada. You pay a few bucks for a bucket of fish (boys like this!) and they can lean over the dock and feed tarpon as big as they are. It's really cool! They have boats, fishing, and such as well and a neat little restaurant called the Hungry Tarpon. Let me know how it goes - we love the Keys!

What Is A Family Friendly Beach Near Orlando?
Asked by David A. on June 09, 2009

A:

Hi there David~

Cocoa Beach is most definitely kid and family friendly. In addition, there are some excellent oceanfront parks with pavillions, bbq grills, a playground, facilities (restroom/showers). We like Sidney Fischer Park and also Lori Wilson Park, The attached link is from our beach expert, David McRee! Lori Wilson Park is his favorite beach in Cocoa, too. We Need A Nice Clean Beach And Lots Of Relaxation. Where To Go?
Asked by Kathy on June 08, 2009
Q: We are driving in from Illinois with our three children and are looking for clean beach and relaxation. Any suggestions?
A:

Hi Kathy~

I have a great idea for you and your family for a fantastic, beachfront vacation along Florida's Emerald Coast. Check out Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. This place has everything you need for the ideal family vacation. The resort sits on 2400 acres! They have five different neighborhoods, kids programs, shops, restaurants, ziplining, oh and a beach! It's really all you need. Here's an article that you can read all about it. They also have a Family Values Program. See all that's included from free bikes and fishing to watersports and beach fun.  This entire area of Florida is nothing short of spectacular in every way. The beaches are pure white and glistening, the water is emerald hued and inviting, and the people are just real and welcoming. My soul felt good spending time here, yours will too. Try exploring the little town of Seaside as well. And check out Barefoot BBQ - the kids meals come on frisbees that the kids can use right away and play with in the town park right behind the silver Airstream trailer that's home to Barefoot BBQ. Love it! You can also take your food right over the beach across the street.

What Can We Do In The Keys Near Hawk's Cay Resort?
Asked by sandy on June 08, 2009
Q: Hi Jill. Back again. We are going to Hawks Cay in July. Can you suggest any MUST DOS! for my family. Just us and two boys 9 and 12. We normally vacation in Sanibel so this is a new adventure on your advice! Thanks!
A:

Hi there Sandy~

Glad to have you back again! You are going to LOVE LOVE LOVE Hawk's Cay Resort on Duck Key. It's so great! You won't even want to leave the resort! But, be sure and check out their dolphin experience where you can kiss a dolphin, swim with them, and hitch a ride with them too. Nearby on Marathon Key, you should check out Sombrero Beach for a day of fun on the sand and in the water. Now, I know you are accustomed to Sanibel so the beach may be a bit disappointing after being spoiled by such splendor. But it's nice, clean, lots of sand (no shells like Sanibel) but it is a great beach for the Keys. Bring a picnic or better yet, treat yourself to lunch at Chappy's Steak and Seafood - right at the foot of the Seven Mile Bridge. BRING YOUR SWIMSUIT - that's right - you can swim while you're waiting for your lunch! This place is so family friendly and tasty, too. I'm going to attach an article about all the other fun things to see and do in the Marathon area including the Turtle Hospital and the Dolphin Research Hospital. You will also be just one hour from Key West - where there is much to do with kids. Check out our video of family fun in Key West. Enjoy your stay in the beautiful Florida Keys.

Can You Recommend Some Family Fun Spots in Naples?
Asked by Cynthia on June 08, 2009
Q: We will be traveling to Naples for a week and have no idea where to go with our kids (6, 4, and 20 months) We are staying at a family member's condo and will have a car allowing for day trips, etc. Any ideas for family fun in Naples or nearby?
A:

Hello Cynthia~

I have some great ideas for your family when you visit Naples. First, I'd definitely visit Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens. It's more than a zoo, you can even take a boat ride! The Conservancy of Southwest Florida is neat because you can see different animals being rehabilitated. My younger son loved this. And, it's great for adults, too. Very interesting. Another place your kids will love is King Richard's Family Fun Park. They have rides, animals, laser tag, video games...you can spend a good part of the day here. There are also several mini golf courses (putt putt)! Coral Cay is a popular one, they have misters that keep you cool in the summer and the little ones think this is really cool. We love to eat at Carrabba's when we're in Naples as they bring out dough balls for the kids to create a work of art (then they bake it for them)! And the kids menu offers a nice variety - and great pizza. For something totally different, try an eco tour through the Everglades. I like Southwest Florida Eco Tours as their tours include lunch (and I love that). A big plus their guides are bonafide naturalists so you'll learn so much and they LOVE their jobs which makes it a super experience for everyone. You can also check out the shopping at the famous Tin City. It's really unique and the kids can find affordable souvenirs (and more fun food)! LOL

Is There A Beach Near Kissimmee?
Asked by ste calvey on June 08, 2009
Q: is there a beach we can drive to from legacy park kissimeethanks
A:

Hi Ste~

The closest beach is Cocoa Beach, about one hour away to the east, or Daytona is about an hour as well, a hair toward the northeast. For west coast beaches, you can drive two hours and be on the Gulf. Well worth the drive. But, if you don't want to drive too far, there is a 'cheat beach' in St. Cloud, right next to Kissimmee. (I call it a cheat beach because it's on a lake and not salt water!) It's called Lakefront Park and they have a beach area right along Lake Toho (short for Tohopekaliga). It's great for anyone wanting to spend the day outdoors. It's got picnic pavillions, a huge lake, walking/biking trails, a splash area...and lots of free family fun.

I have a few suggestions of great places for kids to visit while you are in the Daytona Beach area. First, their Museum of Arts and Sciences just opened at the close of last year and it's wonderful for kids of all ages! They had a top team of experts put these hands on exhibits together and they are truly a wonder. And, since you'll be there in July (and it's HOT outside) you will love to spend an afternoon in air conditioning! They also have a planetarium and laser show. There are lots of places to go play mini golf - my five year old loves this. There's a Congo River Golf in Daytona Beach Shores (20 minutes south) and a Hawaiian Falls Golf there too. There is an ice rink if you want to try that but I don't know of any aquariums or butterfly gardens but in nearby Orlando, there is Harry P. Leu Gardens which is really spectacular. If you've never experienced it, it's worth the drive (less than an hour).  Now, they have a butterfly garden! And you might want to consider a day trip to SeaWorld for the best 'aquarium' experience. There are movie theatres in Oceanwalk and fun places to eat like Bubba Gump Shrimp so you should check out that area of Daytona while you're there. They also have free concerts in the amphitheater right there but the under five crowd will be more interested in dancing on the pavement and chasing seagulls (which could be fun for everyone)! Enjoy it. I know you will.

We'd Like A Resort With Kitchens, Lazy Rivers, And More. Where To Go?
Asked by Bev on June 06, 2009
Q: We're looking for an oceanfront location with a kitchen where we can prepare some meals. We also want a pool that has either a lazy river or water slide to keep the kids busy when they're not in the ocean! We'd like something a little more upscale but not too expensive in this economy. This is our one vacation a year, so we want it to be special. Thanks!
A:

Hi there Bev~

I have a great suggestion for you (maybe even a few)! First, on the east coast in Cape Canaveral (by Cocoa Beach), check out the Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort. It is everything you want AND MORE. It's really a gem of a family property for sure. The pool area is AMAZING with its lazy river and slides, there is also a large indoor play area for kids, a tiki bar for adults, they're on the beach, and the units are nice and big with kitchens, multiple bedrooms and separate living/dining areas. We love it you will too. On the west coast, check out the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort. This place is lovely and right on the gentle shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Be sure to check out all their summer specials online and you can also see them and read about them in the staycation blog I did for a segment of FOX 35 Orlando! They have year round children's programs, onsite everything, nice units with kitchens, and they are the number one tennis resort in the U.S.! Even if you don't play, you'll thoroughly enjoy this resort. No doubt. They don't have a lazy river but they do have pools. Also, try the Tradewinds Island Resorts in St. Petersburg. Enjoy!

Where Is A Family Friendly Beach That We Can Drive To From Georgia?
Asked by Tonya on June 05, 2009
Q: We are planning to vacation at a Florida beach this year for the 1st time. We live in Augusta, Ga and are looking for a family friendly beach (kids age 11 and 13) that we can drive to in about 8hrs or less? Also can you recommend any nice beachfront hotels that are family friendly?Thank You
A:

Hi Tonya~

I am going to give you a few different suggestions as to where you can drive for a glorious beach vacation with your family. From Augusta, since you're on the east coast already, it would be simple to drive down toward Jacksonville. Amelia Island Plantation is a fantastic family-friendly resort in this area. Try horseback riding on the beach! You can read the attached article by the former family expert and see how much fun she and her family had there. In another hour of driving south, you can be in St. Augustine. So much great history to see and explore and the beaches are really nice, too. You can tour the famous fort, see the Fountain of Youth, take a trolley tour and see Marineland and SWIM with the dolphins.  Crescent Beach Condo is the ideal place to stay with its views, beachfront location and large units. For something completely different than what you're used to, drive further to the west coast of Florida, along our Emerald Coast and visit Destin or Sandestin, or anywhere up this way. It's amazing and the beaches are as white as snow and the waters are emerald green. Truly stunning. I love the Emerald Grande as far as resorts but for more ideas, do a search here at VISIT FLORIDA. Enjoy!

Can You Recommend Sightseeing Tours In Sarasota?
Asked by Dorothy McNicol on June 04, 2009
Q: We're visiting Sarasota in July with our two children, age 10 and 13. We'd like to take a guided tour of the city to get an idea of the lie of the land and the main attractions. Can you recommend any bus/ coach/ trolley companies?
A:

Hello Dorothy~

For a sightseeing tour of Sarasota, I would normally recommend Orange Line Tours but for some reason, their website says they are closed till further notice. There is a segway guided tour of Sarasota but again, not age appropriate for 10 and 13. Hmm. You may have me stumped as far as city tours. You can always do a private trolley tour from Sarasota Trolley. If I can find any other bus type tours, I will let you know. I won't give up!

Seeking The Closest Beach Near Orlando - Where Is It?
Asked by Niki on June 04, 2009
Q: whats the closest and best beach to walt Disney
A:

Hi there Niki~

If I only had a quarter for every time I'm asked this question! The closest beach to Orlando is Cocoa Beach, about 55 minutes to the east. It's on the Atlantic side and the surfing is good. If you want to drive two hours instead of one, head to the west coast to the beaches of Clearwater. The waves tend be more gentle on the west coast so it's good for little ones if you plan on spending time in the water.

We Need A Pet-Friendly Vacation Close To Melbourne That's Affordable.
Asked by Diana Ramos on June 04, 2009
Q: My husband and I along with our four boys would love a great vacation. But its not to easy to find something budget friendly for us. Is there a nice place to go that can be pet friendly for a week vacation. We live in Melbourne,fl and are willing to drive.
A:

Hi there Diana~

I have news for you that I hope you'll be excited about. I did a segment on FOX TV35 in Orlando about great staycation deals near Orlando and one in particular is the Clarion Hotel Universal. They are not only pet friendly (up to 75 pounds) they have a fantastic deal going on now for familes. It's $399 TAX INCLUDED for 3 nights, 4 days and it includes tickets for four to Wet and Wild, Wonder Works, Lazer Tag, Pirates Mini Cove, 4 hot breakfasts daily, and 4 snacks daily, too. Also, the Clarion Waterpark Resort (listed on the staycation deals) is pet friendly - they do charge a $25 fee and they have certain rooms that are just for families traveling with pets. Ok, one more, the Holiday Inn on Cocoa Beach is pet-friendly up to 50 pounds, they require a $25 deposit and $10 per night. charge. Now, dogs are not allowed on the beach but they are located right next door to a pet friendly park so it's perfect. Check out their vacation deals on the staycation blog. Country Inn and Suites Orlando Maingate is pet-friendly up to 20 pounds with a few other stipulations (non refundable deposit) and their rates start at just $59 per room or $79 for suites - they have three pools, putt putt golf, and breakfast is included daily! All very reasonable, all pet friendly - all within driving distance! Enjoy

Is There An All-Inclusive Resort In Florida?
Asked by christina on June 03, 2009
Q: we have 4 boys under 12 and were looking for an all inclusive resort in florida do you have any suggestions.
A:

Hello Christina~

The only all-inclusive resort that I am aware of in Florida, meaning that food, drinks, accommodations, activities, etc, are all included in the price. is Club Med Sandpiper Resort. It's located in Port Saint Lucie, about 120 miles from Miami to the north and 120 miles from Orlando to the south. It's a fantastic family vacation spot as there are so many things to do, you can't even begin to do them all. Their kids programs are awesome and offer fun/games/activities for those - get this - four months and up. That's right! They have a Baby Med program for 4 months to 23 months, Petite Med for 24 months to 3 years, and then 4 to 12 year-olds. Those over 12 can even learn how to fly on a trapeze. There are onsite restaurants with sitdown dining and buffets and a private beach on the St. Lucie River. For a beach on the ocean, you can take a 20 minute ride to the Atlantic but you really won't need to.

What Are Some Family Friendly Resorts In Panama City Beach?
Asked by Hollie on June 01, 2009
Q: We will be traveling to PCB in late September with to toddlers ages 20 and 24 months. So far the only place that looks real kid friendly is Splash...any other places to suggest with the little guys we're traveling with? We definitely want to be able to stay in a condo instead of a hotel room. Thank you so much in advance!
A:

Hi there Hollie~

I can definitely recommend family friendly accommodation options for your stay on Pamana City Beach. Sandpiper Beacon Resort is great for families. They have all size units including a three-bedroom as well as a nice playground on the beach, fun pools, slides, a lazy river ride, onsite everything, a luau, and more! For a luxurious stay, try the Shores of Panama City Beach. They have a totally gorgeous pool deck that you have to see to believe and they're on the beach. They also have kids activities but you'll have to come back when yours are a little older! Be sure to check online for their special internet rates. One more favorite is the Edgewater Beach Resort. They love families here and offer a few different vacation packages just for the occasion. They have onsite restaurants, nice pool area, they're on the beach, they have a kids program, and their units are big and beautiful. Check out their rates online and their family packages as well. Enjoy your time on Panama City Beach!

We'll Be In Orlando A Few Days, What's Best For Our Six-Year Old?
Asked by Michael Syroney on June 01, 2009
Q: We are planning on taking our 6 year old (boy) to Orlando in mid July. This will be his first trip to Orlando. We have 4 days. Besides Magic Kingdom, what are the best attractions for him to experience in this amount of time?
A:

Hi Michael~

You are right on the money with wanting to take your son to Magic Kingdom. It's definitely my favorite park for little ones (and adults too)! We also like EPCOT for Soarin', Listen to the Land, the ride in Norway, and don't miss Nemo and Friends! Here's a link to read all the wonderful attractions there. Not far from Orlando is Plant City where you'll find Dinosaur World. It's inexpensive, you can bring your own food inside (including an entire picnic lunch as they have shaded picnic tables and a playground), and it's really a fun way to spend the afternoon. The walkways are shaded, the dinosaurs are lifesize (150 of them) - we love it. There is so much to see in Orlando - this is a hard choice! But I also recommend Islands of Adventure for the younger ones. My sons love dinosaurs and they have a Jurassic Park play area that's great as well as a Pteranodon flyer ride where you fly through the air on the wings of a bird - it's really neat! My sons still talk about it (one year later). If you don't live near the water and your son loves sea creatures big and small, SeaWorld is wonderful. Think marine shows with close encounters, thrilling rides, killer whales, dolphins, WOW. You are going to have a fantastic time in Orlando!

What Are Some Family Attractions Around Jacksonville?
Asked by gill gurpreet on June 01, 2009
Q: looking for family attractions in and around Jacksonville in abt 1 hr.driving distance.
A:

Hi Gill~

There is plenty to do in the Jacksonville area for families. Some of my absolute favorites are: The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens with over 1,500 animals. Don't miss feeding the lorikeets and the giraffes, that always bring big smiles. There is also a train you can ride and a carousel. Adventure Landing is the largest family entertainment center in the northeast. They have everything from go karts to a summer water park called Shipwreck Island. Plan to spend an entire day here as there is lots for your kids and you to do. I also remember a place called Sprinkles, it's an indoor play area with a variety of stations where kids can play different roles with props like being a doctor, a cashier in a grocery store and such. Good for the under eight crowd. And don't miss MOSH - Museum of Science and History. They have great exhibits including interactive ones. In their Naturalist Center you can see all kinds of animals like snakes, owls and other birds. You'll also be just an hour or less from St. Augustine with all kinds of historic sites to explore - the most famous being Castillo de San Marcos. You can even swim with the dolphins at Marineland! For a few more ideas, here's a link that describes the area's famed sites. The Old Towne Trolley Tours are a great way to see lots and you can hop on and off for breaks and to explore.

What Resort Has The Best Pool Area For Kids In Florida?
Asked by Beth on May 29, 2009
Q: best family resort/hotel for kids primarily the pool/lazy river, pool slide/ pool waterfall?
A:

Hello Beth~

I have a several resorts to tell you about that would rank on my list of Best Family Resorts in Florida - but for your specific request of best pool area, here are my picks:  In the Orlando area, I love Liki Tiki Village. Their onsite waterpark is really enjoyable. They don't have a lazy river but they do offer slides for big and little kids, an erupting volcano, water volleyball, a wave pool, and food and activities poolside. Also, the new Clarion Waterpark Resort right off the turnpike in Orlando - they do have a lazy river where you can drift off in an inner tube as well as three main slides, six kiddie slides and even a zero-entry pool perfect for little ones. Check out the photos - it's really state-of-the-art! Also up that way, in Cocoa Beach, we love Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort. Their multimillion dollar onsite waterpark area is so enjoyable you may not want to leave to see other area attractions. They have the lazy river you seek (and it's heated) as well as four-story slides, a tiki bar and grill, and did I mention they are OCEANFRONT? Yep, they're on the beach! If your kids like Nickelodeon, they'll love The Nick Hotel in Orlando. Bright colors, two waterparks, Dora, Spongebob, Diego, it's just good water-filled fun. You will get wet if you sit poolside! JW Marriott (also Orlando!) has a gorgeous heated lazy river that takes you past big boulders and waterfalls but I like the others for the slides and such. This one does boast the largest pool in Central Florida and if you stay here, you can also access the pools at the Ritz-Carlton. Those are my favorites Beth! In addition, I have to tell you that these have fantastic kid programs, too. If I think of any more, I'll let you know.

Hello Giovanna~

The closest beach to Universal Orlando is going to be Cocoa Beach, about one hour's drive to the east. You can also be in Daytona Beach in a little over an hour, also on the east coast, just a little further north. Daytona is famous for its surfing and Cocoa is famous for being home to the Kennedy Space Center (hence its nickname, the Space Coast)! Be sure to see one of these fun beaches for some R&R.

We Want A Beach Near Orlando With Fun Stuff To Do. Where To Go?
Asked by Clyde on May 28, 2009
Q: Hi Jill,My wife and I are planning to visit flordia b'ween jul 11-19 with our daughters, ages 9 and 5. We wanted to visit Disney World and stay close to the beach and other popular activities. Can you please suggest something which would cover this? thank you.kind regards,Clyde
A:

Hi there Clyde~

Well, the closest beach to Orlando is going to be Cocoa Beach, like 55 minutes away. If you want to stay on the beach, one of my favorite resorts is Ron Jon Cape Caribe. This place is a paradise for families with an onsite waterpark, lazy river, slides, indoor play area...and the list goes on. Oh and the units are nice and big. You won't want to leave. But if you do, the Kennedy Space Center is nearby and offers a day of educational fun for everyone. The attached article goes into great detail by age as to what your girls will like to do there. I have to tell you, my nieces LOVE SeaWorld in Orlando. Your girls will too. I've attached another great article for you to see just what fun your daughters can have! It's going to be hot in mid July so be sure  yourself and your kids hydrated. There's nothing worse than overheating while walking around a theme park. Been there. Done that. Bring your own bottles of water in a backpack if you want to save some bucks. Then you'll have extra money for ice cream!

Five Kids, Family Reunion, Two Weeks To Fish And Ride The Rides! Help?
Asked by Karen Mills on May 28, 2009
Q: We're coming to Florida for two weeks over Xmas for a family reunion - from Dubai and Canada. Our kids are ages 9, 10, 11, 13 and 15 - we would love to combine a fun week of Theme Parks with a more relaxing week fishing etc - any suggestions?? thanks!!
A:

Hello there Karen~

I'm so glad to hear that you have two weeks to explore as you all are traveling great distances! You will love your time in Florida, especially since you're visiting in December. Most definitely hit the theme parks in Orlando. Your kids are older so it will be so easy (no pushing strollers - lucky you)! Your choices are many, Walt Disney World has four parks, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT. All are fun and will be decorated to the nines for the holidays. I have to say my favorite is still the Magic Kingdom for Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, the Jungle Cruise, Thunder Mountain Railroad...love it! Also, don't forget about Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. With City Walk attached to the parks, you can shop and dine all in one place. Oh, and you might want to visit SeaWorld. So many great options! Now, getting out of Central Florida and to the coast for some fishing/diving. It may very well be cold in December so I'm going to recommend you drive south. Miami is a four-hour drive and Key Largo is just one hour past that. Come to Key Largo and the beautiful Florida Keys. The diving is awesome and the fishing is fantastic too. Plan to spend several days in the Keys for rest, relaxation, sun, sand, and good times. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo is where you can dive, snorkel, and take a glass bottom boat ride. For great fishing, head to Islamorada, the sport fishing capital of the world (30 minutes south of Key Largo). Holiday Isle has charter boats as does Whale Harbor. I attached a video for you to see. Enjoy every minute - it's paradise.

Where Should We Bring Our Two Small Kids For Beaches & Fun?
Asked by Amber Bass on May 27, 2009
Q: My family (husband, 2 and 4 year old) are looking to come to Florida for a couple of day vacation. We would like to take them to the beach and other attractions. I have heard that Destin is nice. Didn't know if they were too young for Disney World (maybe stay there). Sea World? What suggestions do you have including beach and whatever else for a couple of day vacation for our family?
A:

Hi there Amber~

Your idea of visiting Destin and its snowy white beaches is worth exploring. The area is truly blessed with beauty. For little ones, you can visit Henderson Beach State Park and have a picnic or swim or just play on the sprawling beach. The Gulfarium is fun too with its marine shows and over 200 marine mammals! There's a zoo in Gulf Breeze (the Zoo Northwest Florida) that is a wonderful good time. As far as taking your little ones to Walt Disney World, I took my kids when they were that young (and younger). The four year old will truly enjoy it and the two year old will enjoy the kiddie rides no doubt. It's just hard on you! If you go, plan your day around their schedule. That's really easy to do if you stay onsite. When it's naptime (normally in the heat of the day anyway), it's a great time to head back to the resort, take a snooze in the air conditioning, and you can do round two in the early evening. The fireworks are really spectacular at night but be sure to know if your kids LIKE fireworks or not. Some don't and it's best to leave the park before. If you go to Disney World, you can visit Cocoa Beach on the Atlantic. It's less than one hour away from Orlando so it's very doable. In the Orlando area especially, there are many great deals to be had. Check out my blog on Orlando-area staycation deals - that include beachfront deals, too. Come on down, the weather is fine!

Besides Theme Parks, What Do You Recommend In Orlando Area?
Asked by PAUL BUCHANAN on May 27, 2009
Q: Flying into Orlando 15 October. 2 adults 2 kids 10 and 7. Done all the parks back in 2007 want to chill out this time and visit other places, will have hire car any suggestions appreciated staying for two weeks and dont mind driving about
A:

Hi there Paul~

There is so much to do in and around the Orlando area - and with two weeks to explore, you can see east coast to west coast if you wanted. Cocoa Beach is like 55 minutes from Orlando. In addition to nice beaches to relax on, you can check out Kennedy Space Center. There is a favorite oceanfront park there called Lori Wilson Park with a nature trail, nice beach, playground, picnic areas. It's really a wonderful place to spend the day. Near Orlando is Dinosaur World. My boys love this place, It's really inexpensive to get in and it's like wandering through Jurassic Park with all the shady trails and such. We love it - it's in Plant City about 45 minutes tops. Also, check out Fantasy of Flight. along the I-4 corridor. We did the drive from Orlando to Tampa and found a few fun and interesting things to do and this was one of them. You can check out vintage aircraft, sit in cockpits, eat at the Compass Rose Diner, and explore all about flight in an interactive way - even in a flight simulator. Want to dive in to some old Florida nature? Visit Wekiwa Springs State Park, about an hour's drive. You can canoe the river, hike trails, swim in the cool springs, ride horseback...it's a winner. For more ideas, do a search right here at VISIT FLORIDA. Have fun!

Where's A Nice Beach With Rides, Shops, And A Boardwalk?
Asked by Vanessa on May 27, 2009
Q: My husband wants to visit Ft DeSoto. We have two young sons who want to go to a beach but one that has a "boardwalk" (a row of tourist shops, etc.) and "theme park rides" on the boardwalk too. Is this the right beach or will another FL beach suit us better?
A:

Hey Vanessa~

Fort DeSoto is always a top rated beach and for good reasons. (In fact, it's been rated number one in the nation!) Long piers, sidewalks throughout perfect for biking along the water, picnic areas, great camping, dolphins, manatees, and miles of white sand make it super family friendly. But, there are no amusement rides and no line of shops. Just natural beauty. Now, Daytona Beach has a boardwalk with shops and ONE ride on the pier (a sky ride). You can literally shop right next to the water and there's a really nice area called OceanWalk Village (next door to the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort. Oceanwalk is really nice, they also have an amphitheater right there on the water and in the summer, they will be having free events. There is also a waterpark right across the street although the name of it escapes me at the moment. DAYTONA LAGOON! They have a few rides like a carousel, go carts, water slides, too. Although I must admit for young kids, I like the beaches of the west coast as the waves can be quite large on the Atlantic side. You might also want to consider Panama City Beach. They have super nice beaches, normally calm waters, and attractions with rides are NEARBY. You can visit ShipWreck Island which has big slides for big kids and little slides for the little ones. The town of Seaside up that way is a really neat town like something out of a movie - in fact, the Jim Carrey movie, The Truman Show was filmed here! They don't have rides but they have great cottages, fantastic beaches, and lots of shops along the beach and across the street. There's also a row of those old silver trailers (Airstream) that are walk up window restaurants. If you go, try the Barefoot BBQ - and the kids meals come on a frisbee which they play with in the large green area right there. Daytona sounds like it has most everything you seek.

Seeking A Really Nice Resort In Destin - Where To Go?
Asked by Angie on May 26, 2009
Q: We are planning to go to Destin, Florida in July with our 2 sons ages 20 and 17. Is there alot to do and we want to stay at a really nice place that has a great pool. It can be a condo or hotel. We have never been to Florida and do not know what to expect. Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Angie
A:

Hi there Angie~

I have a great suggestion for you, especially since you want to stay in a nice place with a great pool. Check out Emerald Grande in Destin. I just posted a blog about fishing in Destin and this is where we stayed. It is just beautiful with all the luxuries and amenities you could want. They have mutilple bedroom units with full kitchens, indoor and outdoor pool, hot tubs, adult only hot tub deck, great views, onsite restaurants like Commander's Palace (yes, the famous one from New Orleans), and they're adjacent to HarborWalk Village which has a fishing fleet, dolphin cruises, watersport rentals, shops, restaurants - it's the place to be. Your grown boys will love it. Right around the corner is the Big Kahuna Waterpark, too. There really is plenty to do around there with big name shops, malls, and such, but you've got to take advantage of the emerald waters, white beaches, and perfect weather. There was a place on the end called the Lucky Snapper that my sons loved - because they have a 'claw game' where you can try to grab a lobster. If you get it, they'll cook it for your dinner. We gave up after my wallet was empty - but good luck to your boys! Have a great time. Oh, one more thing your boys may want to try - in Sandestin, at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, they have something called YOLOing. It's like rowing on a long board - while standing up. All the Hollywood stars do it (that's what my older son tells me). YOLO stand for You Only Live Once. So, I guess you should try it!

Can You Tell Me About Property Prices And Such?
Asked by Gina Harris on May 25, 2009
Q: I am currently living in Port Charlotte, FL but I would like to move closer to the Panhandle further down south with my husband and 3 kids, what are can you recommend to be able to buy affordable by the beach?
A:

Hi there Gina~

I can't really help you with prices of real estate but I certainly can refer you to who can - it's called F.A.R. and it stands for the Florida Association of Realtors. You can find the area that you're interested in and a licensed realtor can tell you what things are going for and about the neighborhoods and such. With three kids, the neighborhood is so important (think school zones!). And, I can tell you that I love the area along the Emerald Coast - Destin, Sandestin, Pensacola, Perdido Key...ahhhh. Paradise. Good luck!

Is There A Best Time To Shell On Sanibel Island?
Asked by Pam on May 24, 2009
Q: Where and when is the best time to look for shells on Sanibel Island. I will be in Fort Myers the hirst week in June. Is the a website or other info you would reccomend? ages 52, 49,26,18 and 20 months will be traveling together.
A:

Hello Pam~

Well, this question is just one of my favorites as I am a shelling freak! Now, I hate to say it but apparently the best shelling is in the winter - but I can attest that shelling is fabulous most anytime. There are definitely times to go that are better than others - like right after a storm. The water churns up new shells and dumps them. Also, first thing in the morning - right before daybreak. The early bird get the worm, ya know? Check the tide lines on the beach and also check the 'trash line' where the waves dump right before the shore. Here's a good website for you to check out - it's by the beaches of Sanibel so you can trust what they have to say. My older son and I love shelling so much that we actually hire a boat to take us out the out islands off Captiva (more privacy, less people, a whole lot of fun). We always call Captain Rob Modys of SoulMate Charters. He's the bomb! He knows these waters and will even teach you all kinds of neat stuff. You don't have to try too hard to find seashells here - they are everywhere. Although great finds like alphabet cones and the elusive junonia make it addicting. Enjoy - and let me know what you find!

What's The Best Beach Destination For Families?
Asked by Carrie Lockcuff on May 24, 2009
Q: What is the best family beach destination in Florida? I will be driving from Dallas to Fl.
A:

Hello Carrie~

Ok, that's one loaded question - and it's not so easy to answer! I just asked my five-year old, and he said, 'you know what to type - S A N I B E L!" But, since you are driving from Dallas, you are going to pass some of the most gorgeous beaches you may have ever seen. Yes, my family loves Sanibel and Captiva Island BUT since you're already all the way up there, stay up there and enjoy the glorious green-hued waters and snowy white sand of the Emerald Coast of Florida. Try the towns of Destin, Seaside, and Pensacola. We love them all. The waves can be big or small it just depends on the wind but the beaches are always super white thanks to being made of quartz and very inviting. The town of Seaside is really cute and super friendly. You can rent cottages on the beach and enjoy the flavors of small town life, made famous in the Jim Carrey movie, Truman. If you want to continue to drive, Siesta Key on the Gulf near Sarasota is always voted in the top family beach destinations in the nation as it has gentle waves, a nice sloping beach (almost like a zero-entry pool) and lots of lifeguards, picnic tables, and shells. Many places are offering summer specials like buy 3 nights get one free and such so be sure to ask. Wish I had an easy answer but there's just too many good choices to choose only one!

Q: We have 3 adults, a 2yr old girl, a 6yr. old girl, 8 yr old girl, and 13yr old boy, and 3 adults staying in Mirabella, Perdido Key from 6-27-09 to 07-04-09. Please send me info. in that area of things to do to entertain people of all ages. Thank you so much!
A:

Hello there Nilah~

The area of Perdido Key is full of possibilities. (Did you know that Perdido in Spanish means 'lost'? The Spanish explorer Carlos Siquenza named Perdido Key because it was hidden!) Ok, but back to your question - first and foremost is this area's natural attractions - the beaches! What follows next is a long list that I will attempt to attach links to. Adventure Island has everything from mini golf to go karts and kids rides (they are actually in Alabama but right up the road from where you're staying). There's the Farmers' Opry House where you can enjoy a great meal along with country, gospel and bluegrass music (it's also a campground but don't let that fool you - they have good concerts! In Fort Walton, you can find the Gulfarium - we love this one  with their marine shows, seals, otters, alligators, and lots more. Sam's Fun City will keep everyone busy, too. They're in nearby Pensacola and have rides, slides, golf, go carts, and even bumper boats. Ok, we're almost finished - there's The Zoo of Northwest Florida in Gulf Breeze and you can't forget about the Blue Angels who make their home in Pensacola. They fly over on Tuesdays for practice and you're going to miss their Annual Air Show because it's not until later in July. Sorry!

We'll Be Visiting Orlando But We Want Beach Time Too. Where To Go?
Asked by Trina on May 23, 2009
Q: We are planning a vacation including a visit to Orlando but we would like to stay on the beach. Where would be the best place to stay that is not a real long drive to Orlando? We prefer the gulfside but would be interested in the Atlantic side also. Thanks
A:

Hi there Trina~

Cocoa Beach is your closest choice being about one hour away from Orlando. Also along the east coast and close is Daytona Beach (a little over an hour). These beaches are wide, the surf is great, and the rates are right this time of year. On the gulf coast, Clearwater Beach is great! This is more family friendly for those with little ones as the slopes are gentle and so are the waves. Also, Siesta Key is always a top rated family beach for those reasons and more - like lifeguards and amenities. It's also a top beach for snorkeling as the water is so clear. They also win awards for being the 'family freindliest' beach by many magazines for parents/families. The west coast beaches will take you about two hours to get there but well worth it. For a liisting of things to do (besides rest and relaxation in the warm Florida sunshine) do a quick search here at VISIT FLORIDA by city. Enjoy your trip!

Seeking Beach, Near Orlando, With Activities For Older Kids...
Asked by Cathy on May 23, 2009
Q: We are planning a trip tp Florida with our 2 boys aged 11 and 14. WE will spend the first week in Disney and then the second week at a beach location. WE have previosly spent our second week at Redington Beach but as our kids are getting older we are looking for a location that will keep them busy. We want something on the beach with great pools and but we also want the ability to cook like a condo. We were thinking about Sarasota but are not familiar with the area. WE are open to any location that is a reasonable drive from Disney (max a couple of hours). We are open to ideas and any location. Can you suggest a place that might work for us and 2 teeanage boys.
A:

Hi Cathy~

The area of Sarasota is about 2 hours from Orlando and would make a great location for your beach adventure. As far as units with kitchens, I know that the Lido Beach Resort is an excellent option. They have full kitchens and kitchenette units and the resort offers golf, tennis, swimming pools, volleyball, it's on the beach, and it's close to attractions like the Mote Aquarium. They have a kids club in age groups tht your 11-year old could participate in if desired. The G Whiz Science Museum is pretty cool - this is one the entire family can enjoy with lots of hands on exhibits and experiments. You'd also be about one hour from Busch Gardens and Adventure Island, their waterpark. If you want to try the east coast of Florida, check out Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort on Cocoa Beach. It's one hour from Orlando and this place has all kinds of fun for teens and familes from their amazing onsite waterpark to the tiki bar by the pool and surfing on the beach. And they have kitchens! Nearby is the Cocoa Pier for fishing and such and the Kennedy Space Center.

What About Discounted Tickets For Attractions?
Asked by Phyllis Hedden on May 23, 2009
Q: We're from Il and meeting our son & family (girl 5, boy 3 1/2) and wonder if any discounts for txts to Sea World, Busch gardens, I am AAA member and senior as well
A:

Hi Phyllis~

As a AAA member, you have access to great discounts on theme park and attraction tickets. Be sure to contact your local AAA office. Also, as a senior, you are rewarded with senior rates, too. I like a website called mousesavers.com. They offer discount tickets to most of the Orlando and nearby attractions. Another good one to check is Know Before You Go. As it looks like your son and family are Florida residents, they have access to discounts that you will not - so to save them money be sure to tell them to ask for Florida Resident Discounts. There is no magic trick to getting the best deal in one shot, when it comes to attraction tickets, you have to shop around for sure.

We're Thinking About Relocating To Florida, What Do You Suggest?
Asked by Gina on May 22, 2009
Q: My husband, and I as well as our 6 and 4 year old daughters would like to take a vacation to Florida. We would also like to go somewhere where we can check out the local real estate and see what Florida has to offer as we may want to relocate. We are interested in the west coast mostly. Do you have any suggestions for us? Thanks!!
A:

Hello Gina~

As far as planning a Florida vacation, I can definitely help you out. Since you like the west coast, by all means, come on down! We love the area of Sanibel and Captiva Island for our family beach vacations although real estate on these barrier islands is pricey. These islands are known around the world for the incredible seashells - and seeing is believing! It's a great place to come experience the beauty and sunshine of Florida. Favorite places to stay include Casa Ybel, Westwind Inn, Sanibel Harbour Resort and Spa...to name a few. On the mainland, check out the area of Fort Myers and Cape Coral for affordable housing. A drive up the west coast will bring you to Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota. Your best bet for realty questions is to contact FAR - the Florida Association of Realtors. They can provide you stats on cities, housing info, schooling information, and such. If you're interested in the Emerald Coast, Destin is a lovely area. The beaches are as white as snow and the people are so friendly. They also enjoy seasons up there as it's far enough north to get cold weather in the winter. So many choices!

Where Can We Go On An Everglades Tour From The Crystal River Area?
Asked by Jeri on May 22, 2009
Q: Hello,We are coming to Florida in December. We are swimming with the Manatees at Crystal River and my kids want a day in the Everglades. Where is the best location to enter the Everglades since we're coming from Crystal River and what are the must dos for 10,8, and 6 yr old nature loving boys. Are there any other great things we shouldn't miss with going to theose two locations? Thanks
A:

Hey there Jeri~

You are going to love swimming with the manatees in the Crystal River! It's the coolest thing ever - and the only place in the world you can swim with Florida manatees. To do a tour of the Everglades, drive south to Fort Myers - that is I believe the best place to hop on a one-day tour of the River of Grass. Everglades Day Safari is a great choice. They do it all for you from the airboat ride to a lunch including gator! It's a great experience and you are certain to see alligators, birds, turtles, and lots of plant life.

Are There Handicap Friendly Attractions In Fort Myers?
Asked by Marilyn on May 22, 2009
Q: I am looking for wheelchair friendly places for tourism in Fort Myers. We will be there in June.
A:

Hello Marilyn~

There are most definitely attractions that are wheelchair friendly in the Fort Myers area. Here are a few of the places that I know of and for more options, please contact the Fort Myers' Chamber of Commerce - they can provide all the disabled traveler information you need from hotels to sightseeing and what will work best for your situation. Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre is quality entertainment from musicals to comedies and has a lavish buffet. Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium has a 90-seat theater where you can enjoy an astronomy show. I'm not sure about the nature trails being accessible. On Sanibel, you can visit the Sanibel Historic Village and Museum. They have boardwalks that are handicap accessible and it's quite the history lesson! The Bailey Matthews Shell Museum is another winner on Sanibel for you to enjoy. Learn and see all kinds of beautiful shells - I love this place. J.N. Ding Darling Nature Refuge offers a drivable trail where you don't even have to get out of the car. You drive the path and spot all kinds of wildlife - in air conditioned comfort. Marilyn, I am attaching a link to a very informative page that I found that list all the attractions and exhibits in this area. There are links to website and phone numbers as some of them don't specifically say if they are accessible or not - and I don't want to steer you wrong. Sure hope this helps - enjoy your trip to the lovely and laidback west coast.

Where Should We Stay In Orlando With Our Kids - Close To Everything?
Asked by Tina Sullivan on May 20, 2009
Q: Hi. Can you tell me your top hotel choices to stay in Orlando near attractions, and shopping. We have a 10 year old and a six year old.
A:

Hi Tina~

I definitely have opinions on where to stay in Orlando and I prefer to stay in larger units with kitchens if at all possible (especially if staying longer than three days). First, I want to refer you to a blog page where I recommend my top five staycation deals in Orlando. These places offer mega affordability and are close to most everything. Some even have their own waterpark, mini golf, and more. I really love Calypso Cay and the hotels that are in this complex (right off Osceola Parkway and minutes from Disney). There's a Comfort Inn and Suites, Hampton Inn, and Calypso Cay itself. If you want to stay on Disney property, you can't beat the price of their All-Star resorts (Music and Sports). Free transportation to the parks and great activities for families right on site from poolside movies at night to arts & crafts, and more! Check out Star Island Resorts, too. They're right off Highway 192 in Kissimmee, close to shopping, restaurants, and theme parks. Plus, they have the larger units I love with kitchens to save money on dining out. And the resort has plenty to entertain your 10- and 6-year old. One more, the Nickelodeon Family Suites (the Nick hotel). Ask for their summer specials. They're right around the corner from mega shopping, the kids will love it, and the parks are minutes away.

In The Pensacola Area, Where Can We Stay That Offers Kid Programs?
Asked by sue on May 20, 2009
Q: Looking for a vacation spot in Pensacola area - appropriate for children from 1-5 years old...kids program + babysitting services, if possible. Must be safe environment as 2 kids are special needs.
A:

Hello Sue~

In the area of Pensacola, I would highly recommend the Portofino Island Resort and Spa. They have a really nice kids program and their units offer lots of space with kitchens. I am certain that the concierge can help with private babysitting services as well. They aim to please. In Destin, about an hour away, the Holiday Inn Destin On The Beach offers what you seek. They have KidSuites that feature separate rooms and kid-size furniture on their side. Their kids program is fantastic, offering fun everyday of the week. It's called Little Buccaneers Activity Program - they can also help with recommendations for babysitting services. The only downfall is that most children's programs are for ages 4 or 5 and up. But the babysitting services can help with the younger ones providing escape time for parents. Here's one that offers programs for ages 3-10, it's at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort - which is really a great place for familes, offering a super safe environment and lots to do. They offer a neighborhood environment and they have an entire area for shops, restaurants, and strolling. We love it. It's a little further up the road than Destin or Pensacola but well worth it and you're still on the glorious Emerald Coast.

Looking For A Super Affordable Destin Vacation - Can You Help?
Asked by Karen Hazlewood on May 20, 2009
Q: We have been coming to the Destin area for years & want to know if there are any special beaches you would suggest bring a family with kids to. We are in a recession & will be driving from KY. We are lookling for something economical on the beach if possible. We will be coming in Oct. for fall break. Thanks!
A:

Hi there Karen~

Destin is definitely an affordable - and beautiful area for a family vacation. You have many choices of where to stay, even on the beach. Best of all, since you're coming in the fall, the rates will be even better! Good timing on your behalf. Embassy Suites has nice two room suites for $99 off-season and that price includes free breakfast. Also, check out the Holiday Inn Destin on the Beach. They have kid suites, refrigerators, microwaves, they're on the beach, and their Buccaneer Kids Program is award winning - rooms at $99. Be sure to ask if they offer the kids program in the fall. While you're in the area, check out Henderson Beach State Park (especially if you don't stay on the beach). It's like $4 a carload to get in and they have everything you need for a day at the beautiful beach (grills, picnic areas, showers, bathrooms). Many hotels should be running fall specials with buy xx nights, get xx nights free. Ask for the deals!

Can You Help Us Plan Our Florida Vacation From The Keys To Orlando?
Asked by Rick on May 20, 2009
Q: My wife, two teenage duaghters and I will start a vaction in Miami the first of July. We would like to stay in the Keys, we would like an airboat tour somwwhere and eventually we will stay at Disney World and fly out of Orlando. We have 10 days for this trip.
A:

Hi Rick~

You are going to have a wonderful time and it sounds like you've already done your homework! When you fly into Miami, on your drive down to the Keys, this is when you should do your airboat ride (or on your way back up to Orlando). You'll pass SW 344th Street and US1 (even if you take the Florida Turnpike, it will dump you off right at this intersection). It's the last intersection before you start driving the 20 mile stretch to the Florida Keys. Anyhow, turn right - and head straight down to Robert Is Here Fruitstand - can't miss it. Stop for fruit shakes and make a LEFT and you'll run right into the Everglades Alligator Farm. You can ride an airboat through the Everglades, see gators, snakes, and lots more! In the Keys, you have lots of options but I think Marathon is a great area as it puts you half way between Key Largo and Key West. - so you can enjoy everything. Check out Hawk's Cay Resort. Please forgive me for not putting in links but I'm on a cruiseship at the moment and the internet is quite sporadic and my links are not working! Do a search right here at VISIT FLORIDA for all things highlighted in black and you'll find just what you need. I'd allow four or five days in the Keys and then finish out your time in Orlando as there is so much to see there. Check out mousesavers.com for Disney discounts. Love them!

Where A Great Beach Good For Families & Snorkeling?
Asked by Kristin on May 20, 2009
Q: looking for a place to take my children this summer ages 6 and 14. Want something family friendly with white sand beaches and water suitable for snorkeling. Prefer condo stay to save on eating out and fairly affordable. Can you recommend a couple locations...been to Destin and loved it, but interested in trying another place.
A:

Hi Kristin~

One of my favorite beaches to recommend for many reasons is Sanibel Island. The beaches are clean, wide, full of seashells...you will love it. Also, Sanibel Arms West on the Gulf is offering a 2-bedroom, 2-bath condo with a full kitchen for $99 a night (5-night minimum) but it's a fantastic deal and they are right on the beach. You can also snorkel, swim, play tennis, visit the shell museum, go to the movies, and lots more. Casa Ybel offers condo-style units immersed in luxury with a great pool area on Sanibel Beach, too. Also, check out Siesta Key on the Gulf side, up near Clearwater. Great for snorkeling! Our beach expert, Dave McRee, has a video posted right here at VISIT FLORIDA about snorkeling this beach.

Seeking Fun To Please Everyone With Different Likes/Dislikes - Help?
Asked by greg on May 19, 2009
Q: hi, what do suggest for a family with a 7 and 2 years old girls who like everything and a mother who doesn't like museums? Oh we are Florida residents and did orlando already. thank you!
A:

Hello Greg~

I can help you! Have you ever visited South Florida or the Florida Keys? In the Miami area, there are so many things to keep everyone happy. First, Jungle Island is a great way to spend the day. In addition to the parrots and cool animals like ligers and lemurs, they have a giant slide that they set up right by the bay so bring swimsuits and towels. And don't miss the 'lorikeet feedings' it's really special. Also, the Miami Seaquarium is pretty neat with Lolita the Killer Whale show and dolphin shows, too. There is also a great place that I love to refer families to in the Shops of Sunset Place - it's called Cool-de-sac Play Cafe. It's fun for everyone - including mom and dad. They have like six interactive play stations where your girls can dress like princesses, play computer, get makeup and nails done, do arts and crafts - all while you and your wife enjoy gourmet food with a clear view to your girls. It's wonderful. And Miami Metrozoo is a nice way to spend the day - bring swim suits here too as they have a waterpark (small) area for the kids to play in. In the Keys, try Theatre of the Sea for up close fun with sealions and dolphins. Further down in the Florida Keys visit Marathon! The Turtle Hospital is educational and fun (not like a museum at all!) and Sombrero Beach is perfect for a picnic and a swim. Don't miss the Dolphin Research Center in Grassy Key (right by Marathon). Key West offers the Aquarium for hands on fun and shark feedings, you can ride the conch tour train, visit the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, and eat chocolate dipped key lime pie on a stick from the Blonde Giraffe (the best)! You can check out my video about Key West with Kids for more ideas. Come visit South Florida - it will please everyone. Forgive me for not putting in more links but I'm on a cruiseship right now and the internet is intermitten at best - (AGH!!!).

Can You Recommend Family Friendly Hotels In Key West?
Asked by Sara on May 19, 2009
Q: I'm visiting a friend who lives in Bonita Springs in Aug. with my 3 grandchildren, ages 5 - 10. We're planning on going to Key West for the weekend. Can you make suggestions for hotels? We'll be out and about during the day, but in the evening, would like a pool and the ability for everyone to relax before bed. I don't want to mistake an "adult" hotel. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 200.00 or less a night. Thanks, Sara
A:

I can definitely recommend several options for accommodations in Key West. We frequent the area and have stayed at super nice hotels like Pier House and Ocean Key Resort and Spa to family-friendly Bed & Breakfast places like The Nassau House. The Best Western is a good choice as is Hyatt, although they may be more pricey - but did I say how nice they are? The Nassau House is very affordable and they serve you breakfast each morning for free. That's a big savings. Your idea of exploring in the day and staying in at night is a great idea.

Can You Suggest Family Vacation Spots On The Emerald Coast?
Asked by crystal stevenson on May 18, 2009
Q: suggestion for family vacation with a 6 and 10 yr. old (boys) we are looking at destin or pensacola. Please offer your expert advice!! around the 1st or 2nd week of July
A:

Hello Crystal~

The area of Destin is a family favorite (mine included)! This area is known as the Emerald Coast because of the color of the water - it's various shades of emerald - and beautiful! As far as where to stay up that way, you have lots of choices and lots of little beach towns, side by side, to choose from. In Destin, try the Emerald Grande. It offers luxury and space, heated pools (indoor and out), and its location is close to everything. They are offering a summer special - ask for it - it's buy three get one free. Big Kahuna waterpark is nearby and the Gulfarium. The Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is a winner for families as they have entire neighborhoods of accommodations and a central area with shops, playgrounds, zipline, YOLOing (like rowing on a long board), and more! ResortQuest is the big vacation rental company up there in case you'd like to find a condo or home. Seaside is a great area and they are offering a summer special (I believe it's buy three nights get one free). Seaside Cottage Rental is who to contact (ask for Chip). You'll love anywhere you choose to stay up this way. Bring hats and sunscreen as those white beaches reflect the sun. Enjoy!

We're Coming From The UK, Where To Stay To Enjoy Some NFL?
Asked by Paul Quill on May 18, 2009
Q: Hi there, my family and I are looking at coming over from the UK to take in a couple of NFL matchups, and a beach holiday and was looking for some advice on the best places to stay for the games in and around the City with a view to the remiander of the holiday on the beach and shopping.Your help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.Paul.
A:

Hello Paul~

First, did you know that there are three NFL teams in Florida? The Miami Dolphins, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. So, you have three cities to choose from! Even though I'm a Miami girl, I think you might really enjoy heading over to Tampa to watch the beloved "Bucs" play in their state-of-the-art, Raymond James Stadium (known as the crown jewel of the NFL) for its super nice amenities and comfort. And, Tampa puts you by Museum of Science and Industry, Busch Gardens, Adventure Island Waterpark, and close to Disney (about 75 minutes) - oh, and the beaches of the west coast are fantastic. Sure, you could stay in a hotel near the stadium, but I think you should stay on the beach and ride in to town for a game. You can stay about an hour away in Anna Maria Island and enjoy the Tradewinds Resorts or stay in Clearwater Beach which is also super nice. Here's a listing of accommodation options in the Clearwater area. If you're interested in another area, let me know. You can't go wrong at Tradewinds - it's a family friendly resort with beach, pools, slides, onsite everything.

Where Can We Horseback On The Beach And Stay On The Beach?
Asked by Angie on May 17, 2009
Q: Hi Jill,I am trying to plan a vacation to FL in August for my 12 yr old daughter and my older sister. My daughter wants to ride horses on the beach, and the Gulf-side places we found were Mexico Beach or Bradenton for riding horses on beach. We want to stay ON the beach nearby one of these places, and we'd like to be on a beach that is not too far to reach water (older sister). Which place do you suggest to stay/ride horses?thanks for your help!!!!Angie
A:

Hello Angie~

You will love the area of Mexico Beach! The sand is so white, the water clear, the people are so friendly and there is much to explore in the area. To be on the beach, El Governor is a good place. If you seek something larger, there are tons of vacation rentals up that way. Go with a reputable company like Gulf Coast Vacation Rentals, they will steer you right. Be sure to explore the nearby town of Seaside. It's one of my favorites. Also, you asked about Brandenton. Nearby Brandenton is Sarasota. Ahd, one of my favorite places to send families to is Tradewinds Resorts. Something for everyone is what you'll find - and they are running summer specials so be sure to ask. They were having a free $250 resort credit with a stay of three or more days. That's fantastic and you can use it however you wish. If you want to check out the east coast as well, Amelia Island Plantation offers horseback riding on the beach and it's awesome.  Enjoy your Florida vacation!

Help! We Want Orlando, Theme Parks, Beaches, Tickets, Where Do We Start?
Asked by J. Maurer on May 14, 2009
Q: My husband and I are thinking about doing the Disney thing this summer, but we are CLUELESS as to how we should begin the planning. With all of the theme parks, hotels and resorts, etc. we are having a difficult time trying to filter through to get the best deals. We only want maybe one-two days at Magic Kingdom, possibly one day at Sea World, and then maybe one at Universal Studios. We would like to spend the other two days of our vacation at a beach somewhere fairly close, but don't mind driving a bit. If we could find a resort that is pretty nice, have at least one to two meals there, plus park tickets--some sort of package deal, I guess, that would be great. Thanks for any advice you can give!!
A:

Hi there J~

You are right - there is a myriad of choices in Orlando when it comes to family fun with theme parks, hotels, tickets...finding the best deal is exhausting! First, let me tell you that every hotel in Orlando (or most) are offering great deals this summer. Check out my blog on staycation ideals in the Orlando area for great rates for hotels. Now, you have to decide what's best for your family but Disney offers vacation packages where you stay, play, eat, and ride for discounted prices. They even offer dining plans and they're actually a good deal. But, if you're looking to do it rock bottom price and don't mind doing the legwork, book your hotel separately and then book your tickets through a discount broker. Universal Studios Orlando is also offering great deals this summer - especially for Florida Residents - like 45 percent off rack rates at their onsite hotels - plus special prices on their two-park tickets. When I travel to Orlando with my two boys, I love to stay at resorts that offer kitchens (it's my thing). It always saves money overall and the extra space is great. Try Liki Tiki Village or Star Island Resort. For beaches, Cocoa is your closest beach at less than one hour away (55 minutes). Lots of great places to stay including Ron Jon Cape Caribe (you will never want to leave with its big units, onsite waterpark, lazy river...). Hope this info helps - just take your time and don't get overwhelmed, it will all come together beautifully. Bring your hats!

Where Can I Buy Groceries Near My Orlando Resort?
Asked by Lorraine on May 14, 2009
Q: I am bringing my daughter (10) to disney world may 2010 & staying in the All Star Music for budget reasons next may. As we wont have transport, is there anywhere that you can buy food basics - when i have looked on various web sites - there are plenty of restaurants etc but i cant see any food stores to buy milk, bread etc - are there any? i will be buying meals out - but wanted to supplement this with some food/packed lunch that i could do myself. thanks.
A:

Hello Lorraine~

You will be most pleased to know that your resort, Disney's All Star Music, has a mini-store right onsite. They have milk, juices, bread, cheeses, and other food stuffs available. We stayed at this resort just a few months ago so I am very famiiar! You will love this Walt Disney Resort. Rooms are clean, the pool area is fantastic, there is a food court onsite, and a game room and lots of planned activities to enjoy like nighttime movies by the pool. You can always take a taxi to a large grocery store. The concierge can call one for you. Decide after you see the prices in the onsite store. Our unit had a mini fridge and small kitchen area with a microwave and coffee maker. I think there were plastic utensils, too. Don't let the low cost fool you, this is a fantastic place to stay - at a great rate!

Can You Recommend A Beachfront Hotel Near Tampa?
Asked by Glen Unwin on May 13, 2009
Q: My wife and I have never been to Florida before and we are looking for hotels near the ocean near Tampa or St. Pete area. Can you advise?
A:

Hello there Glen~

Although I normally recommend family places, since it sounds like it's just you and your wife, I would imagine you might want a little more peace and quiet! I just did a segment about great deals for FOX TV in Orlando about affordable (and nice) places to visit and there are a few Gulf coast beach resorts on the list. Check out the video and the blog at the attached link for a great taste of what you can enjoy. I also talk about Sanibel Island in the blog and it may be exactly what you seek. It's quiet and very natural - like Old Florida. Naples is another nice area with lots of shopping and upscale restaurants. Now, you said you're interested in Tampa so let me not ignore that - this is another great area filled with all kinds of things to do from shopping to dining and beaches and events. It's a big town! if you like theme parks, check out Busch Gardens while you're there. For beachfront, head to Clearwater. Here's a listing of accommodation options so you can choose what's right for you. But, I also want to tell you - if you are in Tampa, try your hardest to have dinner one night at Bern's Steakhouse. Wear something nice and be prepared to be WOWED. They grow their own vegetables, make their own dressings and grind their own wheat for bread, marinate their olives for three months, and their steaks are aged to perfection. I promise it will be a real treat and worth coming to Florida for - all by itself. No kidding! Be sure to take the kitchen tour afterward and have dessert in the upstairs dessert room. You'll love it.

What Beach Is Great For Shelling With My Six Year Old?
Asked by S. Armstrong on May 13, 2009
Q: We are taking our soon to be six year old daughter to Disney at the end of August. But besides Disney -- three days will be enough for us, we want a beach experience. I have read that you have mentioned Cocoa Beach and Clearwater but what beach is best for hunting sea shells in the early morning? This is something I did as a kid and now my daughter wants to do it but I'm not sure which beach would be best. Many thanks for your help and your informative blog!

Hello there S~

You've come to right person to tell you where to go shelling! Definitely head to the west coast - and for the best experience you could ever imagine, stay on Sanibel Island. I beg of you! You will just be so pleased with what you find. This is one of the top shelling spots IN THE WORLD. No kidding! The shape of the island allows shells to be dumped there by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the result is beautiful, fabulous shells of every size and color. Get a shelling guide at any beach store over there so you know what are good finds, great finds, and rare finds. And, if you find a Junonia, please let me know - as well as the local paper! They'll take your photo and run it in the next issue. We have yet to find one, but boy do we try. Stay in Sanibel, you won't be disappointed! You will love it!

We're Staying In Boca Raton, Where Can We Take Our Child To Have Fun?
Asked by linda on May 13, 2009
Q: My husband and I are taking our soon to be 3 year old to Florida for the first time. Disney World is too much for him, he'll get overwhelmed. I was thinking sea world and maybe animal kingdom. We will be staying in Boca for the week and renting a car. Any shopping or small amusement parks that you know of?
A:

Hello Linda~

Boca Raton is about 170 miles from Orlando, 40 miles from Miami, and 16 miles from Fort Lauderdale. There is really no difference between taking your three-year-old to Animal Kingdom or the Magic Kingdom. Both have crowds, noise, fun rides - but Magic Kingdom is far better for a child of three. You could just stay south and enjoy lots of things close to Boca. Fort Lauderdale is home to the Museum of Discovery and Science with all kinds of great hands-on activities and a 3-D movie theatre. The Palm Beach Zoo is a great place to spend the day, too. Lion Country Safari in West Palm Beach is where you actually stay in your car and drive a four-mile safari where you can spy hundreds of animals like zebra, lions, giraffes, and rhinos. Wait, there's lots more! Log on to www.broward.org/parks for an entire listing of fun for little ones' water parks. There is one near you I am certain. In Miami, you can visit Jungle Island and the Miami Seaquarium - not nearly as crowded as SeaWorld and much closer! They have dolphin shows, sea lions, a cafe to eat lunch at and Lolita the Killer Whale show. Don't sit front row unless you want to get soaked. Enjoy your time!

Do I Need Any Other Documents For My Grandson Other Than His Passport?
Asked by ann heslop on May 13, 2009
Q: We are bringing our 18month old grandson on vacation, apart from his passport do we need any other documentation with us, his Mum and Dad are staying at home in UK
A:

Hello Ann~

When I took my son to Alaska last year - and we stopped in Canada - I had to have a notorized letter from his dad stating that I was allowed to bring him across country lines. I would bring one along with his passport. I'd bring a notorized letter with both parents signature.

Can You Recommend State Parks In The Jacksonville Area?
Asked by sheila pore on May 12, 2009
Q: i have two kids,8 and 2.We just moved to florida, what state park do you recommend? We live in jacksonville florida.
A:

Hey there Sheila~

Welcome to the Sunshine State! You will love all the things to see and do in the Jacksonville area. And, there are plenty of state parks up your way. Check out this entire list. I really like Amelia Island State Park. It's like 200 acres in size and you can do everything from picnic to swim and hunt for shark's teeth and seashells and spot wildlife. Oh, you can fish, too. One more favorite is Anastasia State Park. They also have a little bit of everything - including a nice little grill restaurant area. You can hike, bike, canoe, kayak, picnic, play on the beach, and if you forget anything, just get it at the onsite store. Have fun exploring - there's lots to see. Oh, and visit the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens this Saturday, May 16th. Kids get in free when they bring a teddy bear (and if it's in need of repair, all the better, there'll be staff there to provide stitches). It's their annual Teddy Bear Affair - don't miss it.

How Do We Entertain A Two-Year Old On Sanibel?
Asked by Chris on May 12, 2009
Q: Jill,My family and I are traveling to Sanibel Island in October for 4 nights for a wedding any suggestions on activities we could do with a 2 year old?
A:

Hi there Chris~

Ahhh, Sanibel Island - one of my favorite vacation spots on earth. Now, a two-year-old can be entertained with pots and pans in the kitchen of your unit (LOL) but there are a few things you can do although I still think two is quite young to really enjoy most of the things to do on Sanibel. There is the Bailey Matthews Shell Museum and they have a kids section where your little one can open drawers and see what's inside as well as a touch tank. He/she may not care for all the amazing shells everywhere but I sure love it. There's a nice library right off Periwinkle Way that has a good kids section complete with a boat that your child crawl in and out of as well as play a few games. There's a stage too, just make sure not to fall off! For entertaining food, go to Biddles Bucket at the end of Periwinkle Way and Tarpon Bay Road. Can't miss it - bright colors and fun for all. Kids get a pail of toys when they walk in to play with at the table. There's also a game room. Stay at a resort with a pool and lots of shade. Build sand castles, hunt for seashells (which are everywhere), bring a pail and shovel and lots of sunscreen. Most kids programs are not offered to those under three so I don't think that's an option. Oh, there's a shopping center (Periwinkle Place) that has a playground and an ice cream shop! Also, be sure to check out J.N. Ding Darling Nature Reserve.

Can You Tell Us Where To Go In Daytona?
Asked by Nicole Bird on May 11, 2009
Q: We will be vacationing in Daytona Beach in late June. Do you have any reccommendations ? We are a family with 2 teenagers. Not sure what to do where to eat.thanks Nicole
A:

Hi there Nicole~

I can definitely recommend a few spots in Daytona. My family loves to stay at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort - for a few reasons. First, they have these family cabana suites that are like your own apartment on the beach. Now, they don't have kitchens or TONS of space, but there is room separation and a nice patio area - and you're right on the beach! No walking through hotels or down elevators with your swimsuits and gear. Also, they are right next door to an area called OceanWalk Village - a $1 billion entertainment complex. Most everything you need is right here - walk it in 1 minute, literally. There's a Bubba Gump Shrimp which I love, a coffee place, a sub shop, surf shops, and other dining establishments as well. Oh, and a movie theatre with ten cinemas. And, right across the street is a waterpark, Daytona Lagoon. Teenagers will love it. (There's a pretty good bbq place across the street to the left as well - can't think of the name!) For you, there's an onsite spa and also, on the other side of the resort is the Daytona Pier. Great place to watch the surfers. There are several onsite restaurants as well - including a weekend all you can eat seafood buffet that was great. Check it out!

Can You Help Us Decide Where To Stay WIth Two Little Ones?
Asked by Saadia on May 09, 2009
Q: Hello Jill, First of all, I loved your advise to travellers with small children. We are planning to visit Florida for a week and a half towards the end of September. I have two children, one will be 4 years and second will be 6 months in September 2009.We want to have a relaxed vacation on the beach in general but don't want our daughter to be bored, so we would like to travel around a little bit (2 to 3 hours drive) to see as much Florida as we can. Now we are not able to decide where we should go, Florida keys area or West Central Florida (Clearwater e.t.c). We have heard a lot about both these areas and want to visit both, hence the confusion. Thats why I decided to get an advise from the pros.Which area would you recommend for us? Please also suggest what places we should check out and stay in.Also, in this trip we don't want to visit theme parks, will come back for those when both kids are big enough to enjoy as well.
