Orlando to Light Up the Sky on the 4th
June 26, 2008
Trying to plan a last-minute getaway to Orlando on the 4th of July? Whether you are coming with the kids from out of state, having a “Stay-cation” in Florida if you are a resident, or just thinking ahead about what might be cool for some family fun next year, here are my top picks:

Independence Day at Walt Disney World Resort
All four theme parks come alive with special shows celebrating the Fourth of July. Downtown Disney Pleasure Island also celebrates with a street party and patriotic music by live bands. Admission: Included in regular park admission. Adults $71, Children ages 3-9 $60, Children ages 2 and under free. Admission to Pleasure Island is free, $20.95 nightclub admission charge for adults 21 and older.

Universal Orlando Resort will feature a special version of Universal 360: A Cinesphere Spectacular, complete with a patriotic finale and fireworks display, on the Fourth of July. Universal CityWalk will also host the All-American Barbecue Celebration on July 4 from 5-9 p.m. Summer food favorites, a live band and street performers are all part of the celebration, which is free except for food purchase.

Red Hot & Boom, an annual Independence Day celebration in Uptown Altamonte, will be held July 3, 2008 from 4-11 p.m. at Cranes Roost. The free event will feature performances by Simple Plan, Kate Voegele, Ace Young, Graham Colton, Ryan Cabrera and Kevin Michael and conclude with an elaborate fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.

The Celebration Town Center will present “A Flashback 4th of July” featuring Michael Andrew & the Atomic Big Band. A parade will start the day off at 9 a.m. on July 4, and then the festivities pick back up at 5 p.m. and continue through 11 p.m. Michael Andrew & the Atomic Big Band will perform two sets at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The evening also includes swing dancing and fireworks. Parking and admission is free.

Fireworks Over the Fountain
Celebrate United States independence at the free fireworks display and laser show around Lake Eola in downtown Orlando.  Residents and visitors alike pack their picnic baskets, comfy blankets and fun-loving kids and head out to Lake Eola for an old-fashioned summertime picnic.  Admission: Free.

Grande Lakes Orlando Fireworks will take place on Saturday, July 5th – which is great because it doesn’t compete with the other theme park fireworks displays. Sit out by the lake, one of many terraces or enjoy from a lake-view room. 9 pm Lakeside. For reservations or more information, call 407-206-2400 or visit www.grandelakes.com

Wherever you go, remember to put safety first.

Have a blast!
