| My dad is a huge nature enthusiast and there is no one better to give your kids a bird-watching lesson than Grandpa.
Fellow readers of my blog on VISITFLORIDA.com constantly ask me to suggest multi-generational travel. Trekking through theme parks can get exhausting, but hiking through serene nature trails tops my list for “Activities to do with Grandparents."
My parents, who live in Pinellas County, have been hiking through Brooker Creek Preserve for years and wanted to share the experience with my son. I went along too. Wandering through the picturesque landscape was like science class brought to life in Florida's beautiful natural landscape.
First, we watched a wonderfully produced 3-D movie that showed us how and why the land was deemed conservation and how important it is for each generations to pass the down the lesson of preservation to the next one.
During our day-trip at Brooker Creek Preserve, my father taught my son how moss grows on the North side of trees (a future Science Fair Project, perhaps) and how to use a compass. (He didn't attend Harvard for nothing!) A woman walking by on our trail stopped us to ask me if we were home-schooling my son. I applaud those who do, but frankly, I just don't have the patience!
“Thank goodness for grandpa,” I replied. “This is just an afternoon of winter break enrichment.”
(I left out the part that I was secretly counting the days for school to start!)
The 8,000-acre preserve is Pinellas County's largest wilderness area and a national treasure. We chose a mile-long hike along the educational center, but there are other options, including horseback rides and classes.
Throughout January, Brooker Creek Preserve features “Family Night Hikes” and “Discover Nature with Your Child.”
I actually stumbled on some "discoveries" myself when an armadillo ran across our path (see picture to the right). They don't jump out at you like that in a zoo! This mom almost ran all the way home!
