A new company has opened in Miami, and the owner is baking up some tastey bread that would be great for breakfast, for afternoon tea or for an easy dessert (add a scoop of ice cream and you're in heaven ... if you weren't there already).
HomeSlice bakes up breads with exotic tropical flavors and musically inspired names (If You Like Pina Colada is pineapple coconut, of course). Owner Anita Borghi bakes up incredibly moist bread/cakes that are packed with great flavors (courtesy of some tropical libations, such as rum). I had the treat of tasting a mojito flavored loaf (that would be Key Lime Twist and Shout) — think plenty of lime with a caramel-like rum topping topped with a flourish of crunchy toasted almonds … a treat.
Other flavors include "She Wore a Teeny Weeny Raisin Polka Dot Zucchini" (a warmly-spiced carrot and zucchini loaf topped with honey liqueur glaze) and "Peanut Butter Chocolate Time" (translate a peanut butter chocolate cup into a loaf of bread. Wow!). There also are some “Loaves with No Name:” vanilla/butter pound cake, lemon/blueberry pound cake, cream peach pound cake with bourbon and -- just in time for the holidays -- pumpkin/butterscotch pecan pound cake and eggnog/pecan pound cake with a dark rum butter glaze. Are you hungrey yet?
HomeSlice offers simple packaging for two sizes of loaves, and Borghi will create a gift box by packaging loaves in fancy gift hat boxes. Delivery ($7) is available in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, and she'll ship orders as gifts, too.
If you can’t make it home for the holidays, send this taste of Florida to remind everyone of our sunny skies and tropical flavors.
