Satchel's Pizza in Gainesville
June 29, 2009
Wow -- a friend introduced me to quite a Gainesville tradition recently, Satchel's Pizza. When I asked my UF son if he knew of it, he related that one of his economics professors has eaten lunch at Satchel's nearly every day practically ....forever. So just...Wow.

Satchel's is one of those funky, friendly places you come across that just seems so right. My friend tells me the goal at Satchel's is to pay everyone truly a living wage, so the employees are happy -- and happy employees make great pizza.

We went for The Mama -- four toppings (roasted peppers, sausage, spinach and artichoke hearts)...very tasty. We ordered right as we got in, so we had a wait ahead of us, which we happily passed in Lightning Salvage, a shop filled with all sorts of kitsch -- all sorts of things I love, and all sorts of things I know I MUST have for stocking stuffers in the future (who doesn't need a wind-up toy in her life?).

Our "Mama" pie was awesome -- thickish, chewy crust with plenty of flavor, and the toppings we chose made one slice of the large pie a full meal (the sausage IS spicy, so be warned). There's so much more to try -- a pesto or white pie and a millet/flax crust pizza (nearly gluten-free), to name two.

Satchel's also offers a deep-dish pie, The Satch Salad and calzones ("Warning: These calzones may be addictive.")

There are plenty of things to bring me back to Satchel's. Can't wait for my next Gainesville trip.

Note: Satchel's only accepts cash. (There is an ATM on site)...also, Satchel's is always closed Sundays and Mondays.
