Key West: Truly Sinful Desserts
April 26, 2009
Bet THAT blog title caught your eye, didn't it?

On my first visit to Key West, one friend, a true Floridian, really stuck by her opinion of the Key West Conch Tour Train, which takes you around town. It's a popular tourist activity, and she wanted to make sure I didn't think it was TOO touristy. If it got her seal of approval, I was in.

Aside from the fact that we were so glad we did the Conch Tour (the guides give nugget after nugget of Key West history, and it's fascinating and highly recommended), one of the places our driver pointed out was Better Than Sex, a relatively new dessert stop on Petronia Street. After dinner at Santiago's (a nice little Spanish tapas spot), we decided dessert was required at Better Than Sex, just a few short blocks north.

The menu was wickedly funny, although I was tempted to snatch it away from my daughter's innocent eyes, it was so sensual and clever. The daily specials are on a blackboard marked "Tonight's One Night Stands." I got the "Naked Nut," a delicious almond cake paired with white chocolate mousse. We also tasted a chocolate brownie concoction ("Jungle Fever") with vanilla bean balls and "Sugar Daddy" Cheesecake. A dessert apiece was a splurge for sure (need I remind you again? This is my job!), although the three of us splitting one dessert would have been more than satisfying. It's not cheap - most desserts are about $10 - but if you're gonna go, go big or go home.

If you visit Key West, make Better Than Sex a dessert stop at least one evening. No regrets.
