Florida is a big state and I can't always keep up with everything. That's where friends come in. My friend Marge Bell, who writes the Florida Beach Basics blog, keeps up with nature happenings over in the Brevard County area.
Brevard County happens to be one of the hot-spots for nesting sea turtles. Marge just brought my attention to an article in FloridaToday.com about this season's guided turtle walks.
You can actually sign up to take a guided night walk on the beaches to look for sea turtles crawling up out of the ocean and laying their eggs in the sand. These walks are very popular, so you need to sign up early for the walks that take place in June and July. Most walks start around 8 or 9 p.m. and may last until after midnight. There is no guarantee that you'll see a nesting turtle, but your chances are very good in Brevard County. If you are interested in taking a turtle walk, you may still have time to sign up. Turtles normally nest at night, but occasionally a turtle will nest during the daytime.
Here are three organizations that offer turtle walks in Brevard County:
Sea Turtle Preservation Society - 321-676-1701
Caribbean Conservation Corp - call Donna Lee at the Barrier Island Center 321-723-3556, Tues.-Sun. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Canaveral National Seashore - Call 321-428-3384
