Forget the treadmill in the gym. Do your cardiovascular workout in real Florida - climb the stairs of a lighthouse! Your reward? A million-dollar view at the top and bragging rights for having made the climb.
Your Authentic Florida Expert made it to the top of Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and you can climb the stairs with me. See the brand new VISIT FLORIDA video here. What fun!
The days of lighthouse keepers are gone. But lighthouses live on and make great destinations. If you haven't been to one, I highly recommend a visit. Florida has 33 lighthouses that are loved and maintained by their own lighthouse associations. Most are open to the public.
In St. Augustine, the lighthouse has 219 steps. Yep. Climbed every one. More than once. Even bought the certificate saying I'd been there, done that.
Ever wonder about the colors of lighthouses? The Ponce Inlet lighthouse in the video is a beautiful shade of russet red with a black top. The St. Augustine lighthouse is black and white stripes. Why the difference?
The colors are called a Daymark. Every lighthouse has its own Daymark, its own distinctive colors, so mariners on the ocean can be sailing along, see it during the day and say, "Ah, black and white stripes, that must be St. Augustine!" At night, the light flashes in a different pattern for each lighthouse - that is its Nightmark signature. You can learn all this and a whole lot more on your lighthouse visits.
Let's get real and find authentic Florida.
