Pirates Coming to St. Augustine on June 6
May 26, 2009
The English pirates are coming to St. Augustine once again and the rumor is, Sir Francis Drake himself (well, a lookalike) will be there. On Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Historic Florida Militia will hold an reenactment of Drake's Raid of 1586 with an encampment featuring military drills and camp life demonstrations. At 7 p.m. a running battle between the English and the St. Augustine townspeople takes place.

There is no charge to come see the encampment or the re-creation of that dark day, June 7, 1586, when Drake's 23 ships and 2,000 Englishmen attacked St. Augustine with cannons. Then the next day, they stormed the city and burned St. Augustine to the ground. Oh, dear. During this 24th annual reenactment on June 6, they'll storm the streets but leave the city intact thank goodness.

This is great opportunity to see a 16th-century encampment at the Fountain of Youth Park, 11 Magnolia Avenue. Then at 7 p.m. the running battle begins at the Santa Domingo redoubt on Orange Street, continues onto the City Gate and then to the Plaza de la Constitucion.

For more information on the re-enactment of Drake's Raid call 904-829-3168. Check out VISIT FLORIDA's Web site on St. Augustine for more events and places to stay. Enjoy.
