Symphony and the City
May 09, 2008
I know you’re preoccupied with the upcoming release of Sex and the City movie right about now, but let’s drag our minds out of the Manhattan gutter and onto Miami Beach for a sec, okay? Because here we’ve got the Symphony and the City event, an awesome musical evening that promises to be just as funky and fabulous as anything our northeastern neighbors could dish up. Oh, okay, and it’s going to be just a wee bit sensual, too.

Hosted by Friends of New World Symphony, the award-winning, hip patron-support group of the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy (NWS), and arts supporters Beau Beasley and Elliot Monter along with Miami Modern Luxury and Chopin Vodka, Symphony and the City takes place on Saturday, May 10, at chic new venue, The Vagabond, from 8-11 p.m.

A performance at 9:00 P.M. by NWS Fellows will feature classical, blues, reggae, rock, funk and house music. Here’s the line-up: Viola Fellow Dustin Buddish will premiere a String Prelude that he composed for his electric violin, a string quartet, double bass and percussion. As it moves along, the tone morphs from classical elegance to a House vibe as DJ JJ Neil adds sexy beats. Cool, right?

Next up, sensual vocalist Jette Kelly will sing the blues classic “Stormy Monday,” with music written by NWS Violinist Karen Franken. Think of this as a “musical tango” or duet, performed by electric violin and vocals.

Then, singer Fitzroy, bass player Buffalo and the NWS musicians will perform hits from Fitzroy’s album, “Her” and “When the Ground Falls,” adding rootsy island soul with elements of classical and hip-hop to the gathering.

The musical part of the evening ends on a funk note, with long-time favorite, “Staying Alive,” written and arranged by NWS Trumpet Fellow Sam Hyken. But of course you can go on savoring Chopin cocktails as the notes echo in your ears.

The event is free for current Friends of New World Symphony members.  Membership starts at $250 per year, and includes free admission to eight exclusive events in Miami and New York.  Individual tickets are $75 and include admission to the event, cocktails and the show.  For membership information, contact Stacey Glassman at 305-673-3330, ext. 230.
