Test Your Cultural IQ
March 25, 2008
To celebrate Florida Heritage Month, a recognition of our diverse culture and history which began March 15 and ends April 15, the FHM web site is offering a quiz. Questions range from who wrote River of Grass to which grocery store is not native to Florida.

Now, now, don’t be so smug! This is harder than it looks—I only got nine out of ten correct, and that’s even with looking up all the answers on the Internet beforehand (*shame*).  But I swear, that supermarket question is a trick!

Also of interest on the site: An event calendar highlights what’s happening to celebrate FHM on each day. For instance, there’s the County Heritage Tribute on April 12, to be held in Heritage Park Village in McClenny (formerly Darbyville) in Baker County. The event includes homemade sausages and hams straight out of the smokehouse, syrup from the syrup house, horse and buggy rides, tours through the moonshine museum, and speakers honoring the McClenny and Darbyville families. Or head down to the Homestead Historic District for the Frontier Days Antique Car Show, also on April 12. Or whoop it up in Hernando County from April 11-12 at the 27th Annual Florida Old Time Music Championship.

During FHM, there’s no end to the authentic entertainment. If you can’t make any of it, compromise by ordering an official poster, featuring Charles Desilver’s 1859 map of Florida. The historic detail can keep you mesmerized for hours.
