The once thriving pre-Columbian village of Ucita, located at the mouth of the Little Manatee River in Ruskin, Florida, was reduced to just a footnote in history after the Spanish Conquistadors landed on the shores nearly 500 years ago. The Friends of Ucita, a group dedicated to rediscovering, preserving and sharing with future generations the life-skills of the area’s vanished native people, offer a simulated archaeological dig at the Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center on the fourth Saturday each month at 9:30 a.m. Program participants are assigned a grid, dig to find potsherds, and then put their 'artifact' back together.
