Umatilla
Aptly nicknamed “Nature’s Hometown,” Umatilla, 45 miles north of Orlando, is nestled at the edge of the Ocala National Forest, which spans nearly half of a million acres. The Lake County city of roughly 4,000 residents offers an abundance of family-friendly experiences, from its parks, preserves, and waterways to U-pick farms, independent eateries, and public art that reflects the community’s love of the outdoors.
Alexander Springs Recreation Area, one of the most popular destinations within the Ocala National Forest, is located 13 miles north of Umatilla. The first-magnitude spring has shallow areas that are perfect for families with children to wade and swim as well as a 25-foot-deep spring bowl for snorkelers and swimmers to explore the crystal-clear water. Of the national forest’s four major springs, Alexander Springs is the only spring where scuba diving is allowed.
Alexander Springs is also a welcome stop for hikers along the Florida National Scenic Trail, and offers campsites, paddling along the spring run, and an accessible picnic area and boardwalk. More outdoor fun can be found at Trout Lake Nature Center, North Lake Regional Park, and Sawgrass Island Preserve, and visitors can experience thrilling adventures on the Ocklawaha River with Justin’s Jungle Airboat Rides Unlimited.
In town, a stop at Sunsational Farms, home of the “Big Orange,” for frozen treats, freshly squeezed orange juice, and fresh produce is a must. On Fridays and Saturdays, guests can grab lunch at Big Orange Grill, which serves burgers, wraps, and other quick bites. Nearby, Old Crow BBQ is a popular spot for Southern-style fare and barbecue, and The Mason Jar, just south of town in Dona Vista, draws in travelers of State Road 19 with a menu of homestyle eats.
A stay in Umatilla means never being far from the water. Nelson’s Outdoor Resort, located on the banks of the Ocklawaha River, offers RV spaces, vacation rentals, and a marina with boat slips and launches. Olde Mill Stream RV Resort has RV spaces on Lake Pearl, and at Fox Den Country Inn, guests can choose from motel rooms and rental cottages and walk to Lake Umatilla right from the property. While in town, art lovers and families with children want to check out Cadwell Park, where a collection of large chainsaw carvings can be seen depicting local wildlife.
