Tallahassee
Tucked in the Big Bend region of North Florida and home to two major universities, Tallahassee is Florida’s capital city — and much more. Steeped in history and brimming with Southern charm, Tallahassee offers more than 700 miles of trails to explore, world-class arts and culture, college football games, unique entertainment districts, and access to some of the most iconic parks and nature preserves in the state.
Rolling hills and fall foliage are just a few of Tallahassee’s unexpected delights. Whether in town for a college graduation, family vacation, or to catch a Florida State Seminoles or Florida A&M Rattlers game, visitors have plenty to see and do, from exploring the city’s diverse culinary scene to seeing the museums, art galleries, and entertainment hotspots. For art and history enthusiasts, visits to the 10-acre Railroad Square Art District, which has dozens of galleries, shops, and small businesses, and the Apalachee-Spanish living history museum of Mission San Luis are a must.
Families with children won’t want to miss a trip to the Tallahassee Museum, where guests can zipline through the treetops with Tree to Tree Adventures, explore a farm, see Florida wildlife, and learn about the area’s history. Warmer months call for a stop at Cascades Park, where kids of all ages can splash in the Imagination Fountain’s 73 jets, which turn into a light show at night. At the city’s many dog parks and pet-friendly restaurants and attractions, even four-legged family members can join in the fun.
The Tallahassee area’s unbeatable outdoor scene features sprawling parks, lush gardens, and hundreds of miles of trails for hiking and cycling, mountain biking, paddling, and horseback riding. At Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, 20 minutes south of Tallahassee in Wakulla Springs, visitors can swim in one of the world’s deepest freshwater springs, eat and stay at the historic lodge, and take a boat tour of the scenic river. Outdoor adventurers will also want to check out St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and Aucilla Wildlife Management Area, which are both about 30 minutes outside of Tallahassee.
