Milton
The historic town of Milton, just 30 minutes northeast of Pensacola and 35 minutes northwest of Navarre Beach, is known for its friendly, laid-back atmosphere, cultural sites, and pristine preserves and waterways that set the stage for unforgettable outdoor adventures.
In the historic downtown area, visitors can stroll the Milton Riverwalk, situated along the scenic Blackwater River, and check out family-friendly attractions including the West Florida Railroad Museum, which offers children’s train rides, the Panhandle Butterfly House & Nature Center, and the splash pad at Carpenter’s Park, which also has a canoe and kayak launch to the river. A designated trail town, Milton is home to the paved, 8.1-mile Blackwater Heritage State Trail, a popular path for biking, walking, running, and skating.
One way to enjoy the clear golden-hued waters of the Blackwater River is by tubing at Blackwater River State Park, where visitors can enjoy the easy pace of the current and dozens of white-sand beaches, which are perfect for picnicking and relaxing along the tubing route. Visitors can also canoe or kayak the river, hike the state park’s miles of trails, and camp within easy walking distance of the water.
To experience more Northwest Florida nature, a trip to Yellow River Marsh Preserve State Park, which protects one of the only remaining tracts of wet prairie in the state, can yield sightings of rare and endangered animal and plant species, including carnivorous pitcher plants. At Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site, Northwest Florida’s largest antebellum mill, visitors can learn about the property’s long history, tour the museum and historic home, and explore the nature trails and wheelchair-accessible elevated boardwalk.
