West of Port St. Joe, a thin strip of land extends into the Gulf of Mexico. This is Cape San Blas, the antithesis to bustling northwest Florida beaches. The Cape is known for "The Stump Hole," a jackpot for anglers, castnetters and crabbers; its old iron lighthouse; and three parks, including St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, named the best beach in America (2002) by Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman (a.k.a. Dr. Beach).
