Centrally located between Palm Beach and Miami, Pompano is often referred to as "the Heart of the Gold Coast." Pompano began as a farming and fishing community and derives its name from the area's popular ocean fish.
Pompano is known for its excellent boating and fishing, accentuated by an offshore living coral reef accessible to inquisitive divers and snorkelers. Anglers and families flock to the 1.800-foot municipal fishing pier, beachside playgrounds, grills and picnic tables to test their luck at personally manifesting the title "swordfish capital of the world" and dining on the prize.
Pompano also maintains 19 local parks for sports enthusiasts or those who have a penchant for outdoor relaxation. Local attractions, fine dining and shopping provide a myriad of entertaining options, not to mention annual special events including a holiday boat parade, seafood festival and fishing rodeo.
The Hillsboro Lighthouse can be easily spotted from Pompano's ambulating roadways and paths along 3.5 miles of golden beachfront, sounding a beacon for the millions of visitors every year that are drawn to the excitement and accessibility of one of Broward County's gems. |
